Great defense by Astudillo in that last inning. Thank God this pitching staff is back to their dominant ways, because the bats are still lagging pretty badly. Why must we make Detroit's pitching staff look better than Cleveland's?

I would gladly pay extra for an MLB.TV subscription if there was a "La Tortuga Cam" option to watch during the game.

I haven't looked into the details, but baseball-reference.com introduced a feature along those lines, which amounts to an add-on to the mlb.tv subscription and alerts you to certain situations, such as a particular batter coming to the plate.

Whoa, Trevor May dominates with a power save. His mechanics finally looked good, rhythm good, so he was bringing 96 to 98 heat with ease, meaning he could control it.

Astudillo back there playing NHL goalie, what, eight times in the final inning? He's very good at directing the block. I wonder if the runner on 2nd base suspected he was setting a trap...

I'm going to give Tortuga another hat tip. Several tough and huge blocks on balls in the dirt that inning. Well done, young man!

Sure, those blocks of pitches in the dirt mighta been clean pick ups, but if felt at some point as though we were almost daring the runner on 2nd to try to advance on one of those. Gunning a runner down trying to advance on a little dribbler away from the catcher seems like a good way to eliminate that threat.

I guess we gotta work a little more on it before we get someone on it...

Edit: Ninja'd by jimbo... when will i ever have an original thought?

Oh, and the third part of the combo platter was the chicken taco salad, which I brought home and put in the fridge, so I'm ready for tomorrow.

You’re gonna grow feathers with all that chicken

Said runner was Schoop.

Said runner was Schoop.

True.

And perhaps that meant it was less risky.

It won't always be, which i suppose means it might work in the future, but is just as likely to backfire, and result with a runner on third.

I've always wondered if you could try the following on a low pitch you catch cleanly: wheel around 180 degrees as though you had let the ball go straight through the wickets, then wheel around 180 degrees again and see if you have caught the baserunner napping.

I suspect the Unwritten Rules say that that's bush league, and I would see two pitches buzz under my chin the next time I came to bat.

That's right there with the hidden ball trick.

Just as long as you don't accidentally smack the ump.

There are places in a home ball field that have friendly bounces, and i've always wondered if a pitcher were good enough to hit that part of a backstop...

I'm sure it could work once, maybe twice before other teams caught on.

Serious question, here: when it's a close play and the first baseman needs to cross the line to make the play, what is the rule about interference, and who interferes whom? On this play, Sano touched the base with this foot, then gave the batter-runner a little push for safety's sake, and since the play is technically over there can't be interference. Suppose the play had been a little closer still - who needs to be the one to avoid contact in this game of chicken?

It's something that us umpires call 'an unfortunate crash play'.  I actually thought Sano was gonna get dinged for obstruction because of the way he veered in front of the runner on his way to the bag but then after seeing a second replay, I realized that he had no way to take a more direct path to the base given his momentum.  Plus, he could have very easily been running at the batter-runner to tag him.  Think of this other situation -- ball thrown by the SS or 3B is up the line taking the 1B into the runner.  What happens if they crash together?  It's not interference on the runner provided he's in the runner's path.  It's not obstruction on the fielder because he's making a legit play on a thrown ball.  You hate to see it but sometimes it just happens and you hope no one gets hurt.

Congratulations. Your answer has the ring of truth, and both Brock and Chief managed to be incorrect while taking opposite sides of the issue (a neat trick), while I never committed myself. Not just win-win, but Win-Win-Win-Win! :)

Why do you assume that he wouldn't? My point is that we have no idea what would've happened if they had left him in for the 6th, but if you're asking me who I trust more to hold onto a two run lead and get six outs, I would pick Duffey and Rogers over Dobnak 10/10 times.

And then we can look at the BP game to follow and check the BP chart and find we only have two unused RP as the series continues.
