I dig the option for a 2nd year.

Aren't Romo-level relievers available at that price most offseasons? (Or trade deadlines, for that matter?) Romo himself has been available on 1-year deals the past 3 offseasons, at $2.5-3 mil each time, coming off not appreciably different stat lines / peripherals compared to 2019.

It's not a bad thing, but I'm not sure the 2021 option at $4.75-5 mil means all that much.

I like keeping this guy around because of his attitude alone. He knows what it takes to win. His performance? He does well, but not a guy I want in the 8th or 9th most times. That said, his slider is still really tough to square up.

Either way, he's worth a roster spot and I could care less that the Twins might have had to give up some money for them. They have cheaped out enough. Pay the man

I like it, basically the Twins paid $500K for the option to get first dibs on him next year.

How did you figure the $500k? Do you just mean, you expected him to get $4.5 mil on a one year deal this winter?

I thought there was at least a chance he'd settle for $2.5-3 mil again like he has the past 3 offseasons, or maybe only bump up to $3.5-4 mil. In which case, the "dibs" for 2021 would be costing you more than $500k.

Not that it really matters, it's a pretty trivial amount either way -- I just didn't find the option year to be too noteworthy.

Nice to have Romo back. Still consider this offseason an almost total failure if they fail to swing a trade or sign a good mid to top of the rotation starter. Without that third guy it's gonna be a long season.

Great one year contract with an option should he have another good year.  Was a bit surprised at the amount, but he should be a good veteran in what is still a very young bullpen.

His signing brings the 40-man to 38.  That's only two open spots with the likelihood of four additional signings over the next couple months...a lefty reliever, two starting pitchers and a player to address the corner infield need.  Perhaps one will come via trade, but even so there is a good chance they will have to make one more cut to the current 38 players on the roster.  It's also possible they will bring in only one more starting pitcher and give the #5 spot to the winner of the young gun competition.

Ryne Harper is the only "painless" option to drop at this point. If we have 4 more adds as you hypothesize, we have a trade to come.

I like Tony's brother. He is funny and has a good attitude. If we cant win the big games, I still need to be entertained because we spend a lot of money on beer to watch the Twins.... I need some return on my investment!

$500k is the buyout if they decline the option

No, the buyout is $250k.

And a buyout isn't any good on its own, it is just a slightly deferred part of the guarantee. An $X buyout is only a good deal if you think the player is worth more than $X above his salary. Do we think Romo's services are worth more than $5 mil in 2020?

No. The buyout is only good (used) if you don't feel he was worth the amount of the option year. There is some merit to what you say in that the agreed to rate is $5M even if he was so great as to merit a higher contract in 2021.

I like signing Romo. I am good with signing another mid reliever as well. Kintzlers is available. As is Swarzak.

Also I hope we go get either Ryu and sign a cheap 1B, or Donaldson, Wood and Smyley, or trade for an ace and sign a cheap 1B. And call it an off-season

Probably not. But, the Twins likely won't come close to spending their entire budget, and I think they're better with Romo than they are without him, so overpaying him a million or two has zero impact, IMO.

That's what I've said. I was just curious why folks were specifically endorsing the option year. I guess I'm just neutral on it.

I just like having the option. Gets rid of a little uncertainty and is a really low risk play for the team. He falls off a cliff, no biggie, you pay the $250K. He tosses another strong season.... you pick it up and is one less hole to fill. I just don't see the downside in it.

Even when the Twins were losing 90-100 games they signed bigger free agents than Romo. Nolasco, Lynn, Santana, Reed, Pineda, Castro, Cruz/Gonsalaz/Schoop last year. This happens most years, the Twins don't sign guys until right around Christmas and no one's happy (me included).

With Wheeler (and the pie-in-the-sky names) gone Ryu and Donaldson are the only two free agents I have more than a passing interest in, but there are a lot of guys aside from those two that are bigger "names" than Romo and I'm sure there will be some signed.

I hope you're right but I'm still pessimistic. I admit I'm impatient and disappointed in the lack of signings. but it seems to me like the Twins continue to play some sort of waiting game rather than being more aggressive, or proactive, and really making an earnest attempt to acquire what they need to make the team better.
