I haven't been really interested in a streaming service in quite some time but I'm pretty excited for this.

Review of The Mandalorian, spoiler free:

Meh, then okay, then "Damn, Favreau, you're walking over hallowed ground here, watch your step".

Can't wait for the second episode.

Free with Verizon Unlimited starting today! Just sign up on Verizon. Or, wait a month or two, so it lasts longer into the service's run.....

I'll be watching the Madalorian tonight, and someone I know will now watch it legally....

I have a hard time supporting Disney. I realize with star wars I have no choice, but don't think I can support this service.

Are they honestly any better or worse than the others? I don't like that the government has allowed this consolidation but it's not as if Disney is the only company doing it, they're just the best at it (ie. they don't buy things and then drive them into the ground... Hi, AT&T).

First episode of the mandalorian was quite good. I love it's lack of being human centric....

I've seen you reference that twice now... what do you mean? Almost all the major speaking characters are human, and all the speaking characters who appear to be recurring characters are human.

The dude that helped him on the planet was human? We don't know all the recurring characters yet. There were plenty of non humans all around the town, and in the first scene. His first bounty wasn't human. Compared to the movies, it's a real difference. Especially the two newest movies.

Sure, there were lots of non-humans but I'd be surprised if the "I have spoken" character has any role beyond the first episode. Maybe he appears in the second episode as an escape vessel but that's not really a recurring character, that's just a plot piece.

The key characters are the Mandalorian and his Empire employer, the rest are probably chaff (for good or bad). We haven't even seen the actual characters beyond those two who will truly factor into the season.

I can't believe you are arguing this. There were more non humans in those forty minutes than the last two movies combined. I guess you can be pedantic, sure, the main characters are human. Whatever.

I get your point but I disagree that they're influential to the plot.

And I wish that I was wrong, but I feel that I'm not.

The last two movies were Skywalker movies; their entire point is to face the evil of humanity, just like the original trilogy. They didn't have a bunch of aliens because they had a ton of lore to deal with, namely the exit of Luke, Leia, and Han. Whereas in the original trilogy, it was easy to bounce cool aliens off Luke, Leia, and Han. You didn't have to mix in Poe, Finn, and Rey while also mixing in the exit of those classic characters.

Different objectives, different goals.

We have Disney+ and it's pretty good. Lots of fun nostalgic things - my kids now love Spider Man and his Amazing Friends!

I really like the Mandalorian. Deep library of movies as well. I was going to post in the stock market thread but Disney Stock has had a nice week.

Disney+ strikes me as an example of people who understand that money isn't everything.

Because they have both, and should therefore know the difference.

Ya, I probably should have just held that investment a couple years ago......oh well.

The amount of grassroots marketing for this streaming service is nuts. They're using their powerful subsidiaries like ESPN personalities pumping it up any chance they get.

price point and brand recognition doesn’t hurt.

If Disney plus came in at Netflix rate, I probably wouldn’t have subscribed, at least not with any intention to hold onto it for any extended period.

My wife got it behind my back. Now we're in full on marriage crises. Just kidding, we've been there since she said yes.

The Mandalorian is good.

There's a lot of concentration.

oh yeah, I wonder at what point we’ll get more antitrust litigation. Between Disney and the big tech platforms, and the cloud server providers, all of our access to “content” is being consolidated into just a few companies with a lot of power to control what we see and how.

Also, with modern technology the plot of Home Alone doesn’t work in 2019/2020. Kevin would face time his parents saying “Hey you left me at home!” Mom gets out of the cab, ubers back home and if they fly Southwest, change their ticket to a later time in the day.

Worst case, if Kevin’s parents don’t want to go back and get him, they Venmo him $200 and he sits at home. Only answering the door for the Uber Eats delivery guy.

Who knew...But there's already 5 Home Alone movies with different kids and different villains. This'll just be a franchise "reboot," different from a remake.

There are no Home Alone movies after Home Alone 2. Fact.

This is the correct answer. Home Alone 3 was on TV the other day, and oh boy, that’s a really bad movie.

Who asked for this?

Don’t mess with a classic like Home Alone... There’s no way, no how, they can recreate that magic.

If Macaulay Culkin is one the burglars, I'm in.

Unexpectedly, I was given a year's subscription to Disney+ for Christmas. So, ignore my earlier snark. We have no kids in the house. What's on this channel for grownups to watch, besides Mandalorian?

I’m a grown up 11 year old, so I like most everything there.

I’m currently watching Star Wars chronologically. When I’m done, I’m looking at the National Geographic documentaries. There are several, but first on my list will be the Apollo one.

And there’s always the Simpsons

Hm. I lost interest in the Star Wars universe at the conclusion of The Empire Strikes Back - "aw geez, looks like they're setting it up for another sequel?" Seemed kind of forced, no pun intended.

I watched the first episode of Mandalorian last night. I liked the misfiring landspeeder, and the killer robot. There were enough clever ideas in it to get me to watch it again with Mrs Ash who was busy doing other things when I saw it, and to try the second episode. Hope it doesn't go beyond 2 like the original.

The Simpsons seem to be on pretty much all the time on one of the regular cable channels, so that's redundant.

Star Wars, Simpsons, kid series, kid movies. I see most of the Pixar stuff when it comes out at theaters. Guess I'll check out some NatGeo. Disney owns a lot, but what's on Disney+ is quite a limited subset. I didn't know what to expect. Now I do.

I can't imagine paying for this. When my "free" year is up, it won't be renewed without major changes

I'm paying for it on a monthly basis. I personally get more value from it (quality vs quantity) than Netflix. My kids are young which is a huge plus to hold onto it for a while.

I too am looking for a significant expansion of content... It's not enough to hold onto it for extended periods.
