Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2019 Posted December 9, 2019 Wow, isn't that exactly what the Yankees offered to Cole? They'll have to increase that offer now.Not necessarily, assuming no one else offers Cole more. Or perhaps more accurately, if they don't mind waiting around, while Cole decides to wait for a better offer himself.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2019 Posted December 9, 2019 Full no trade clause and no opt years either. The no-trade clause doesn't really matter -- Strasburg gets no-trade rights as a 10-and-5 player next June anyway.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2019 Author Posted December 9, 2019 Wow, isn't that exactly what the Yankees offered to Cole? They'll have to increase that offer now. I've read that offer is bunk. OTOH, I've read they will be making an offer to Cole today.....
dex8425 Verified Member Posted December 9, 2019 Posted December 9, 2019 I suppose the Angels will also be offering a 7-8 year contract to Cole as well. They could beat the Yankees deal.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2019 Author Posted December 9, 2019 I'm guessing 8 290 for Cole. But I literally have no idea now. Well, it won't be less than 7. And it will be at least $35MM per year....so I have some idea.
cmoss84 Verified Member Posted December 9, 2019 Posted December 9, 2019 Will Angels go after Cole or Rendon? Texas and LAA could getting into a bidding war for Rendon...
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2019 Author Posted December 10, 2019 If I'm the Angels, I pivot to Ryu and Bumgarner both.......but I'm not the Angels.....
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2019 Author Posted December 10, 2019 Interestingly.....if you go to Fangraphs, they'll show you the comps for Stras, and how those players did..... If he's like his comps, he'll be worth this contract........
biggentleben Verified Member Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 $80 mil of Strasburg's $245 mil is deferred. Will be interesting to see what they calculate as the "present day value" for luxury tax purposes. His last contract had $70 mil deferred, reducing its "present day value" from $175 mil to $162 mil.His opt-out actually cost him significant deferred money. It was a major gamble that he did win. The Nationals won their case with the Orioles this winter and will receive not only a 9-figure total compensation from the Orioles over the previous years lost in broadcasting revenue but their upcoming years should be significantly better as well, though it's hard to budget that right now as they've never experienced life with a fair and equitable television deal in their shared portion of their market. I guess I'm just getting sick of the deferred money jokes as the Nats aren't doing it just to avoid the luxury tax. They've legitimately been in a legal battle over their primary source of income for their organization the last few seasons, and until that was resolved, deferments were a wise business decision for the team and player.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 His opt-out actually cost him significant deferred money.I'm not sure what you mean by this -- Strasburg will still get all of the deferred money he earned through 2019 on his previous deal ($30 mil), even if it hasn't been paid out yet. I guess I'm just getting sick of the deferred money jokes as the Nats aren't doing it just to avoid the luxury tax. My joke has nothing to do with the Nats intentions -- just that they frequently defer a lot of money, that's all.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2019 Author Posted December 10, 2019 Surprised Didi only got 1 year, if true. Also, the Angels are clearing money......
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 Also, the Angels are clearing money......And it cost them the 15th overall pick from 2019.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2019 Author Posted December 11, 2019 And it cost them the 15th overall pick from 2019. Yup, worth it if they can now sign Rendon or Cole or two good starting pitchers....otherwise, not so much.
MABB1959 Verified Member Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 Will Dozier land anywhere?
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2019 Author Posted December 11, 2019 Will Dozier land anywhere? I'd guess minor league deal, later in the off season. But that's a guess.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 Yup, worth it if they can now sign Rendon or Cole or two good starting pitchers....otherwise, not so much. The Angels were $58 mil under the luxury tax threshold before dumping Cozart -- I don't think they really needed to move him to add anyone, if it was a bad baseball move. Of course, it could be a good baseball move -- maybe they've grown pessimistic on their draft pick. Although it's been so quick, that would call into question their drafting acumen too...

Diesel Verified Member Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 Gerrit Cole to the Yankees. 9 years 324 million. My goodness that is a large contract for a pitcher

Musk21 Community Moderator Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Dodgers and Indians "continue to be engaged in serious trade talks" involving Francisco Lindor. Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2019 Author Posted December 11, 2019 Cleveland trying to be like the Rays....but no other team has cracked that code.....
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 Cleveland trying to be like the Rays....but no other team has cracked that code..... Yeah, looks like they're talking Dustin May and Gavin Lux for Lindor so far? At least Lux hasn't developed as expected. Oh, wait, .607 was his SLG.?!? I thought that was his OPS.....

This for a guy that averages 7.3K/9. Even 24 for 2 years seems a lot, given what the Twins gave Pineda.
