turns out after the extension, Mays wasn't REEAAADDDYYYYYY!!!!!

And yet, 6 days later, Mays single-handedly won the only game the Twins managed to win in the ALCS. 8+ innings and 1 run.

 

Making Mays the answer to this question...who is the only Twins pitcher to win an ALCS game since David West in 1991?

For those of you wondering, this "_____ > Joe Mays" bit goes all the way back to the day of that game on the now-defunct ESPN boards.

 

Somebody melted down after Mays' performance and typed "______ > Joe Mays" for the first time (did it start with him being compared to Sean Bergman?).

 

From there, as the internet is wont to do, things only escalated and within a few hours, poor ol' Joe was being unfavorably compared to things like "Avian Flu", "Herpes", and "Carrot Top".

Those of us that participated in those boards commonly refer to them as the elysian fields. But yeah...
