Brudsar Graterol called up? (now verified)

MLB Trade Rumors is reporting that Graterol will be up after September 1. As noted above, he will probably still be eligible for postseason play. BTW, let's spell his last name correctly: GRATEROL

He won't join the active roster until Sept. 1, but I'm guessing they put him on the 40-man before midnight tonight. There is an open spot. Unless they are calling up someone else who needs a 40-man spot, then not sure how they will handle it ... put Gordon on the 60-day?

In order for him to be eligible for the postseason, moving Gordon or Poppen to the 60 day makes sense. If he just needs a spot on the 40 man, they have plenty of DFA candidates. I'm sure he won't be the only one needing a 40 man roster spot that gets called up.

I'm not sure I understand your question ... are you asking if either of those could or would be moved to the 60-day IL? I'm guessing neither will be.

Who is all of: a) on the 40 man roster, B) on the injured list, and c) eligible to return from either the 10 or 60 day.

Moving a player to 60 day IL does not allow you to add a player to the playoff roster unless they're eligible to return (already past 60 days). If you need these 40 man spot now, then moving a player to 60 day makes sense. Otherwise leaving on the 10 day gives more flex since they can be swapped out and replaced with playoff eligible players after Sept. 1.

Not sure how much more flex you get. You still need to clear a 40-man spot for any guy you want to add after Sep. 1 (beyond Graterol, assuming he takes the open spot) -- and you won't able to 60-day DL Gordon or Poppen to do it, if you need them to stay on the 10-day to petition for postseason eligible replacements.

There's already an open spot on the 40-man that I am assuming is for Graterol. I was referring to if they are calling up anyone else already not on the 40-man, then they would have to find a spot.

Why can't you 60-day either of them?

You could, but then they won't be eligible for postseason replacement because they can't serve the full 60 day DL stint by season's end.

http://m.mlb.com/glossary/transactions/postseason-roster-rules-eligibility

"A player who doesn't meet said criteria for postseason eligibility can still be added to a team's roster in the postseason via petition to the Commissioner's Office if the player was in the organization on Aug. 31 and is replacing someone who is on the injured list and has served the minimum amount of time required for activation. (For example, a player on the 10-day injured list who has been on it for at least 10 days, or a player who has been on the 60-day injured list for at least 60 days.)"

I guess you could 60-day one guy for the 40-man spot, and petition to replace the other... although it sounds like we will have to petition one for Graterol already, before even adding anyone else.

Well, in the case of Gordon, I don’t think he’s even near rehab. Given that, I’m not sure you’d want to add him to the post-season roster having no reps in September, and then makes him a 60-day IL possibility for flexibility. But then, maybe he’s closer to coming back and on the list of call ups and then, no, you wouldn’t do that.

This doesn't make any sense to me. If we have an open 40-man spot, what benefit is there to wait to add Graterol to the 40-man until Sep. 1, after the postseason eligibility deadline?

Save a couple bucks on the days not spent on the 40/active?

I have no problem with getting his feet wet for a couple games and then start upping the leverage.   He will give up ruins.   Everyone gives up runs but it would be nice to see him come up assimilate quickly.

Really puzzled about the open 40 man spot.

Seems like it needs to go to someone who might be s it’s season option? Should we expect the commissioner to rubber stamp every injury petition?

Who else would get that spot?

Nor to me, unless they have someone else they want to add? Don’t know. Again, until we know who all is getting called up, we just don’t know what they’re doing.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. It has nothing to do with using Gordon in the postseason. But in order to petition to make someone else postseason eligible in Gordon's place, Gordon needs to be eligible to return from the injured list. (Don't ask me why, but that appears to be the rule.) So Gordon can't be added to the 60-day DL anymore if you want to petition to replace him on the postseason eligibility list, because he himself won't be eligible to return from the 60-day IL before the end of the season.

Ah, okay, then I misunderstood how that rule read.

In the game thread, Milldaddy quoted that Ian Miller will be called up. That will probably take the vacant 40-man slot.

Huh. Thanks for the tip. I guess it probably doesn't matter which one you add by which method, since the injury petition process seems more or less an automatic rubber stamp.

If Ian Miller takes the open spot, we'll need to open a spot for Graterol. I guess we could 60-day IL Gordon and petition Graterol to replace Poppen if necessary, or vice versa. Or just DFA Diplan? Maybe we want to keep both Gordon and Poppen as eligible for replacement?

I still think O’Rourke will be called up too. He’d need a 40-man spot, as well.

With Graterol, Miller and O’Rourke ... that’s a lot of 40-man shuffling.

He still needs a spot to play in September. Why not do it today? Use the 60 day IL. DFA someone. Why leave it to a petition? What is the benefit to waiting?

No benefit, but if you are adding multiple guys, and you have the injured guys to make the petition, it doesn't really matter which order you add them in.

Seems to me having an option is better than having no option.  Twins gave themselves an option

Not sure what you mean? Twins don't gain anything by waiting to add Graterol until tomorrow, except making Ian Miller postseason eligible without petition, and Graterol is only postseason eligible with petition. (And I made that post before the Ian Miller news was posted. I agree now it probably doesn't matter what order you add them, it just didn't make any sense to wait on adding Graterol if they weren't adding anyone else.)

Does it count as an option year if they call him up today? Will it count tomorrow? I am sure that is the reason to wait.

No, option years are not affected here. A player only burns an option year with 20+ days spent on optional assignment. Graterol will have zero days on optional assignment in 2019 whether added today or tomorrow.
