gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 Nice article at TwinkieTown about going after Maddux, the recently fired Nats pitching coach. Myjah notes that Levine worked with him for 7 seasons in Texas. Makes sense. https://www.twinkietown.com/2017/10/20/16510192/mlb-minnesota-twins-should-go-after-mike-maddux-pitching-coach-nationals

Old Twins Cap Verified Member Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 He's the guy at the end of every mound visit, he raps the pitcher twice in the chest with his knuckle. Every time.
Rosterman Verified Member Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 I say go for it! Otherwise, see if Rick Anderson is available. Or bring back Dick Such!
jimmer Verified Member Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 I haven't seen any announcement that Maddux was fired (other than the link provided ). It's not on the Nationals site, it's not on in the article on the Nationals site that said that Baker got fired.
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 Sure seems like there are some interesting and high quality candidates out there. I was expecting Carl Willis to be the front runner based on reputation and FO familiarity with him, as well as being a candidate 3 years ago. But Maddux is, to say the least, an intriguing candidate. I could be on board with him.
Guest Guests Posted October 21, 2017 Posted October 21, 2017 Very interesting. Would his brother come by every now and then?
Jacksson Verified Member Posted October 21, 2017 Posted October 21, 2017 When they stated that Baker's contract was up and would not be renewed, they also stated that the contracts of the entire coaching staff also expired at the end of 2017. They then stated the new manager would select their own coaching staff.
Respy Provisional Member Posted October 21, 2017 Posted October 21, 2017 Mike is obviously extremely well-regarded and very knowledgeable and experienced. I'd say if anything might hold the Twins back, it's that I assume Maddux is of a very old-school approach. I'd hope they'll at least be inquiring.

Being able to make the information relevant and providing a plan of action to the pitchers is the important skill here. He doesn’t need to be an analyst, there will be a team of those in the FO. Having the starters while on the bench chart hitter/pitch tendencies seems rather new school, as far as using time on the bench productively rather than sitting there and screwing around.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 I respect the hell out of Maddux but really, I'm hoping the front office is smarter than me and finds a person I've never heard of before.

That's how I feel. Obviously I know who Mike Maddux is, the player. But pitching coach? I have no idea if he's an good at it. I don't see this as something to be particularly excited about without knowing more.
