Bye Bye Stanton - to the Yankees

Guzman is a decent prospect and Starlin Castro will probably be flipped. Marlins werent going to get a lot for Stanton when only absorbing 30M of his monster contract.

It's not like the Marlins are going to get better value out of that $30 MM annual salary than Stanton. Their new owners, like the old owners, are just going to pocket the leftover money saved from trading him away.

I don't want to talk about it.

Interpretive Dance could be effective at expressing the anger we are all feeling.

Hmm. I have to wonder why the Yankees decided to go after Stanton. I wonder if they see something in Judge that leads them to believe they need more than just Judge?

If I remember correctly, during the playoffs, it became very apparent that Judge is vulnerable to the slider.

So, could it be the Yankees are not sure Judge can adjust?

Or, am I completely off-base?

Probably as simple as you can never have too many weapons, and there is no salary cap in baseball.

No, but there is a luxury tax and I believe the Yankees are well over the cap. And I know an announcer said the Yankees were going to look for ways to get under the luxury tax cap. (Of course, after the signing of Stanton I take that statement with a grain of salt)

Well if an announcer said it...

Yankees lost enough free agents this offseason that they're still below the luxury threshold. They're looking still to trim in order to have the freedom to pursue some free agents for the rotation, but they're not over right now.

Okay, thank you for the information.

I really like the off-season because I find it interesting to keep an eye on the moves made by various teams. Though, be nice if the Twins would make a move.

I'd say the latter. It would be no fun at all being a Marlins fan knowing how cheap they operate. This trade is nothing more than a salary dump for Miami.

It's embarrassing no doubt. This is the same group that had no problem using Carl Pohlad (whining about wanting a new stadium, but unwilling pay himself) as a talking head for their empty contraction threats in an effort to force cities into shouldering the burden of new stadiums.

What a gross trade. Miami doing what Miami always does... Trading away legit players for nothing more than salary relief.

It is interesting, that in the time since the Twins last played in a World Series.... that the Marlins have won two, and with, I think, two different owners, and each after a total clean out like this. And then they built the winner, spending huge. Seems Houston did something similar very recently. So I don't feel sorry for them. I would rather win a World Series once every ten years, be the fan of a team that is good for only 3 of those ten years, and is a real playoff team for 3 of them, and wins one, than watch a rebuild that never really happens for years but is always talked about. I wouldn't mind winning every year, either.....

I am making my voodoo dolls of Yankees. I have an endless supply of needles, and other dastardly tools to inflict upon them in the coming season. As the injuries mount, remember you heard it here first.

I do this dance where I jump around waving my two middle fingers in the air in the general direction of the Bronx. It's quite cathartic, really.

This is probably a crazy thought I should keep to myself, but...

If the Twins can get good trade value for Kepler or Rosario, any interest in making a trade for Ellsbury if he decides he wants to be traded? Like Liranio's trade to the Bluejays, there would need to be prospects to offset the negative value and probably some money as well. Could Chance Adams be gotten?

We'll never know, but I wonder if things would have been different had Jose Fernandez not been killed in the boat accident.

They would have been much different. The Yankees would have got him too for the same deal.

Slightly off topic, but are people convinced Judge will repeat his performance?

Well, here's the thing. He's a guy who was made by that joke of a stadium he plays in. On the road he put up an incredible .256/.404/.531 line. But in that band box, it goes to .312/.440/.725. His babip, which is largely luck driven, is insanely high everywhere. So he could be worse but the park bails him out.

His babip is .357, which is perfectly in line with someone who hits the ball as hard as he does. For reference, it's only 16 points higher than Joe Mauer's career babip.

I'd bet .357 will be his career high for a season.

I feel kind of cheated we didn't get a chance to read drama like this all winter long... It's delicious that being a Marlin for life is framed as a punishment for Stanton.

Kind of an empty threat with the opt out Stanton has..... and still has.

Could be, though I doubt it. Mauer has had 4 seasons higher, and Stanton hits the ball harder than Joe. But even if it is, it won't be by a significant amount. I'd imagine he'll be in the Miguel Cabrera range for his career, which is .344.
