Rule 5 eligible

Does anyone have a list of player eligible for the rule 5 draft and needs to be added following the season? It'd be helpful to get a list to follow those players more closely. I know of Gonsalves and Rodriguez. What about Diaz or Arraez? Who else?

Updating to having a running list:

1. Gonsalves

2. Rodriguez

3. Thorpe

4. Stewart

5. Slegers

6. Diaz

7. Arraez

8. Palacios

9. Molina

10. Eades

11. Burdi

12. Clay

13. Reed

14. Curtiss

15. Murphy

16. English

Lewis Thorpe as well. I figure we could have as many as 7 slots open up. If we have more than 7 slots that should be added, it may make sense to trade some of these guys now

Would any of those players get selected besides Gonsalvez?

Think the only players you might roll the dice on (and leave off) are Thorpe and Arraez.

Edit: added some names. I think you almost have to protect at least 7 of the names there (there's 9 names there that I personally would want to protect). A lot of guys need to be evaluated. Could be some good guys to consider trading. Some of these guys will be picked in the rule 5 draft

Would Zack Jones be eligible again? Obviously his injury status probably puts him in most team's no-fly zone, but I'm not sure how it would effect his eligibility.

Burdi

Reed

Curtiss

Stewart

Rodriguez

I believe Curtiss and Reed will be on the MLB team before the end of the year. Kohl Stewart? Let's see how he does the rest of the way. I could see a team taking a flyer on Dereck, but probably not sticking.

What do you do with Burdi? Add him to the 40 and 60 day dl?

Candidates to be off the 40 man at this point are Belisle, Boshers, Breslow, Gee, Gibson, Haley, O"Rourke, Santiago, Turley,  and possibly  Murphy or Palka are all likely candidates to off the 40 man as well as Vargas being moved for a prospect. If Perkins still can't pitch they could possibly waive him if they are still tight for a spot. It might depend on the rst of the season for Adrianza, Busenitz and Hildenberger. Then there is whatever they might sell at the deadline.  Plenty of room in the inn.

Might be ready to pitch next season.  Same time table as May.  No DL,  Just 40 man

I talked to Luis Arraez today, who ran today for the first time since his ACL surgery.  Despite feeling good, the team is holding him out of action until Spring Training so he's probably safe in not protecting.

Yes. Once you are eligible once, you are pretty much eligible forever until you are on a 40-man roster (or a free agent). I think Jones and Bard won't be eligible for minor league FA until after 2018.

There is no DL in the offseason, so Burdi would just occupy a 40-man spot until March, then we could move him to the 60 day and open up a spot for someone else. But from November (when I presume he would be added) until March, he will count against our 40.

They will have to make room for May too as soon as the regular season ends. O'Rourke will probably just get cut at that point.

On the other side of the coin, who's leaving the 40 man?

Perkins
Breslow - hopefully it'll happen this season and replaced with Reed/Curtiss

Belisle - see Breslow explanation

Gee
Turley (?)
Kintzler (FA)
Santiago (FA)
Vargas (?)
Gimenez

Gibson (may not offer arbitration?)

Could be up to 10. I assume they resign Kintzler and keep 1-2 other people on that list, leaving 7 spots. I'd want them to keep 3-4 open spots for FA signings as well. So realistically, there's room for about 3-4 on the pending Rule 5 list that AZTwin has in the OP.

I'd keep the following, assuming Reed and/or Curtiss is added in this current season:

- Gonsalves

- Diaz

- Burdi

I don't see teams doing this, despite it making sense. I have to wonder if there's an unwritten rule here.

Referring to Rule 5 and the DL?  It would happen.  Nobody is passing on a Rule 5 pick anymore because they need a few more months of TJ rehab.  The most notable example is the Braves and Daniel Winkler a couple years ago:

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/103811648/with-eye-on-future-braves-take-winkler-in-rule-5-draft/

And the general Rule 5 DL strategy is no secret anymore -- three 2017 Rule 5 guys have been on the 60-day DL the entire season so far.  Even a guy like Zack Jones, the Brewers used the 60-day DL and a rehab assignment for extended evaluation before returning him to the Twins.  I'm sure some of those health situations were not entirely planned, but I think teams are pretty aggressive about looking for them too.  Even the Twins put JR Graham on the 15-day DL for fairly generic reasons a couple years ago, and seemed to be pretty quick to DL Haley this year too.

Injured guys who struggle and miss multiple seasons like Wimmers or Bard are often safe.  But a legit prospect, who was performing well but just had TJ surgery?  I think teams protect them now, basically 100% of the time.  Burdi might be a bit of an edge case -- he already scuffled in 2015, and missed a lot of 2016 -- but unless the scouting really diverged from his early season performance this year, I'd have to think he would be a lock for Rule 5 selection this winter, if left unprotected.

To your list, I'd add the following possibilities to leave the roster, depending on how they finish the season, of course:

Palka

Boshers

Busenitz

Pressly

Perkins is already "off" the 40-man, in the sense that he's on the 60-day DL.  Same for O'Rourke, and I doubt he will get his spot back after the season.

In that line of thought, Trevor May will need to be "added back" after the season too, so that claims one of the opened spots.

I would be hesitant to leave Thorpe unprotected.

He could be useful out of the bullpen next year for a team that drafted him and he will still be only 22 years old. After next year they could have him hone his SP skills in MiLB until he is ready to come back to MLB as a starter.

He would be easier to hide on a 40-man than Haley has been, and I believe he has much higher upside.

Yup.  They got away with it last winter because Thorpe had missed 2 whole seasons and was a bit of a wild card.   But now he's back, he's still left-handed :) , and he's missing bats at high-A and almost 22 years old.  He could have been a justifiable Rule 5 pick last winter; this winter, I think he could be a very good one.

On the subject of Haley, I guess he should be a candidate to be dropped from the 40-man this winter too.  It would seem odd after keeping him on the roster all season, but it's certainly possible he could clear waivers then, depending on how the season plays out. Teams will have a lot of their own prospects/players they are trying to protect at that time.

I think they should protect Thorpe, he might not make it thru again being left-handed, still relatively young, and having some success in High-A.  I don't think there's a lot of danger on losing the position guys, maybe Palacios.  I can't imagine somebody taking Diaz, kind of hard to stash a DH type and probably not worth it for a guy that has only played in Low-A and hasn't exactly lit the Midwest League on fire.  They'll have to choose who they like best among some of their relief prospects, may lose a guy or two there.

Which of these news guys need to be added? Moya, Littell, Enns?

Moya and Littell, if you want to protect them. Moya was eligible last year but not taken. I think this is Littell's first year eligible. Enns is already on the 40 man.

Man, that's a lot of RP names that are Rule 5 eligible. Considering the time to contend this season is essentially over, they REALLY need to shuffle around their options to eliminate some names from the list. I mean, really, they can't have 15 relievers on the 40 man roster.

Perkins Duffey, Rodgers, Pressly, Orourke, Hildenberger, Busenitz, and Randy Rosario are the only current RP if you think Belisle, Boshers and Kintzler are going.  That is eight. Moya would make 9 Burdi, Bard, Curtis, Melotakis, and Reed would make 13 if you kept all of them. That would be a big if.  I could see them not adding back O'Rourke and not adding either Melo or Bard.  That would mean one other decision or carrying one more pitcher, or cutting Perkins if his velocity is not coming back.

Litttell and Ennis are starters as are May, Gonsalves Slegers and Melville if they like him. Colon, Gee, Santiago, and likely Gibson would come off. Maybe Turley if they do not like him. That would balance
