Also, let's get an MLB team in Mexico City!

The Mexican League is about AAA caliber or so, but it's really more like AAAA, because while AAA affiliated baseball is about guys on their way up or at least kind of cycling in and out of the bigs, the Mexican Leagues are far more likely to employ guys on their way down.

For example, my local team is the Diablos Rojos de Mexico, and I was recently at a game against the Pericos de Puebla ($8.50 front row seats, and $1.50 beers!) and their starting pitcher was none other than former Twin Josh Roenicke.

Now, that guy's not going back to the MLB, but it was just a couple years ago he stuck on a major league roster. People here in Mexico know and love baseball.

Plus Mexico City is bigger than any city in the U.S. So even if there's little local support, it'll still be much, much more local support than, say, Oakland or Tampa or Milwaukee. If New York could support three teams, Mexico City could support one.

Former Mexican League standout...

It would help if there were enough people to buy tickets- 37% of Puerto Ricans are on food stamps and the "official" unemployment rate is 15% (actually much higher) and the Commonwealth is on the brink of bankruptcy. In short, it's an economic basket case.

That;s because they don't have baseball.

If you build it... The Money will come says Kevin Costner or whoever the voice was.

Absolutely goddamn right.

Canada has had 2 teams, Latin America should get a try.

Current! It's Amanda you need to keep your eye on.... And run.

Oh oh oh, right! I just got the names mixed up there for a second. Karly was cool. I met her once, and she was very nice. Amanda though? Amanda was awful.

"Oh No... Guadalajara won't do now.".

There are very few moments in life when you get context to repeat that line

On a serious note, I commented in the past that Berrios reminded me of Pedro Martinez. Not because they were both Latin, or because they threw the same way, but because they both worked hard, had bulldog mentalities on the mound, and neither fit the classic height and size regarded as optimal for a stud ML SO.

But I have always lauded Berrios work ethic, will to be great, and seeming knack for making adjustments. Now that he has settled down, adjusted, and realized he belongs in the league, he looks great and should only get better and better.

Not going to say he will be an ACE, much less a HOF'er, but would anyone bet against this kid at this point?

Monterrey is the 3rd largest city in Mexico... Mexico City is the 1st... You skipped over #2

I guess... "Oh No... Guadalajara won't do now.".

How many besides you, me and Chief get the reference?

Monterrey would be a better choice. Much higher per capita income, more industrialized, closer to the US for travel purposes.

The first two are, ironically, reasons that it wouldn't work. People come up from south of the border (yes, that's a thing here too) and from the Mesoamerican states to Monterrey to work at factories, including a lot of car factories that are kind of the quintessential Nuevo Leoneso industry. They're not from there, and usually they don't plan to stay. Also, they're often sending their disposable income home because it's how you support families in the poorest states.

Also, I don't think "closer to the US" is a concern at all. My company is based out of Atlanta. When I flew down there direct on Delta from MSP it was near 3 hours. When I fly up there now (also on Delta) it's 3.5. Honestly, an hour on a plane isn't a deal breaker. Seattle to Tampa is way more taxing than, say, Houston to CDMX.

The migrants aren't necessarily the target audience. Monterrey offers more chances for corporate sponsors and luxury box consumers, more disposable income in the native population, modernized urban infrastructure and facilities. Closer ties to the US economy, more people speak English...

Much of Mexico City is Third World... and as pointed out by RB, Guadalajara won't do.
