It's sad that I kinda view this as a good thing.

Okay, so Mejia is now locked in. How quickly can Gonsalves get up to speed?*

*I'm half-joking, he won't be ready any time soon but only half-joking because seriously, I'm not ready to see Gibson pitch again

I was pulling for Hughes to have a good year.  Given is lack of overpowering stuff, I gotta give him props.  He knows how to pitch and set up a hitter.  If he didn't, he would have gotten smacked around a lot worse.  I hope he can take what's in his head and download it to some of the young guys.  I don't expect him or Perkins to make an appearance the rest of the year.

Yeah, me too. Not good.

Gonsalves might be good to go in 8-10 starts tho. Could be quicker than we think.

Hmm..

I wonder who told him his shoulder was sore.

Seriously, I hope he gets better. No rushing. He should take all the time he needs.

No hurry he is signed for two more years after this year. Plenty of time to rest and rehab!

Boy, I hope so.

I am making assumptions about health and effectiveness that may not come to fruition that quick. But I could see 4-5 starts in AA to get up to speed on pitch count and prove health, then move to AAA for 4-6 starts to show he can be effective.

Yeah, I just noticed Gonsalves is still in Chattanooga. For some reason, I thought he started for Rochester the other night. Obviously, that pushes back the timeline a fair amount.

Well, hopefully Mejia and/or Gibson run with this opportunity. The broadcasters noted that the Twins were something like 15-3 when they got a quality start this year, which is a pretty solid winning percentage.

Hughes had a decent career. Some very good years in there with a Twins club that adored him from day one. He has nothing to be ashamed about.  A .527 record and a career ERA close to 4 is better than most pitchers.

It's in his best interests to retire. Giving up his giant salary will be tough but his body is done.

I could see an injury settlement, but he's not giving up that much money most likely.

I'd guess the reality is somewhere in a gray area. Hughes is probably at the stage of his career where his shoulder is always sore to some degree. If the results on the field aren't good, the inclination is to see if some extended rest can help. It's not a made-up injury, but the decision is somewhat a matter of convenience and managerial oversight.

Don't want to wish injury on anyone, but I'm ok with him never making another start for us. Time for Hughes to find his niche in the bullpen. Probably long man mop up duty. Pelfrey held back May, I don't want Hughes holding back the next in line.

I don't want Hughes holding back the next in line.

Which is fine, I don't want to see that happen either, but I do wish there was someone else in line.

Unfortunately, there isn't.

This situation is why I so badly wanted Santiago retained. Pitching depth isn't a thing that exists on bad pitching staffs. The Twins are already digging on the scrapheap we're not even out of May yet.

One of the greatest injustices I've ever seen. Prized prospect May banished to the bullpen in favor of Pelfrey the retread. Need in the bullpen or not, you don't fill it with a top prospect who was just coming into his own. IMO ruined May's career.

Ryan should have filled that bullpen need in the offseason. Or trade Pelfrey for a reliever.

Sorry to bring up the past when we're looking forward, but I'm still steamed about May. Loved that power arm. How nice would he look in this rotation right now?

This is too bad... But makes a lot of sense after watching his start yesterday. He was throwing beach balls right down broadway, and couldn't command his off-speed stuff.

Time to stretch out Duffey.  I don't need to see any more Nick Tepesch starts.

I'm happy with Duffey right where he is. I'd give Wilk a couple starts. You never know. Maybe they have something with him.

No it isn't. He signed a contract and is entitled to that money. The Pohlads can afford it.

Slegers might be terrible, but he also could be similar to what we once thought Gibson could be (after the initial high praise)--that 4.20ish ERA guy who can eat innings at the bottom of the rotation.

I would not mind seeing Aaron Slegers for a bit.

This will not happen anytime soon, if my guess about the front office's focus on "consistency" is right. They'll want to see half a season at AAA.

He does share a quality that I always found infuriating with Gibson: the propensity to follow a good start with a shaky one. If further seasoning allows him to capture what works every time he goes to the mound, I am willing to be patient. Or more to the point, I want to see a string of starts that are good, to confirm that he's got it.

And he's my Adopt-A-Prospect, so this view is coming from nothing but a good place. :)

That is true about this year, though last year he was pretty consistent. There is also something weird about his home/away splits for the last two years.

I know Berrios has had two amazing starts to begin his year at the MLB level, but say he hadn't?  Either way, this injury to Hughes should lock Berrios into the major league rotation the rest of the year.
