If Gibson pitches well tomorrow they can maybe phantom dl him. Otherwise the starting options are a little sparse.

Hughes to the pen.

DFA Gibson

Sign Fister

Trade for Richard

There is zero reason to DFA Gibson with how thin the Twins SP depth is.  He's 28 or 29 and has one option year left after this season.

Fister already signed with the Angels.

Yep. I've been wondering about this since April 1. I like the direction that the new executive staff is taking the Twins, but, but... Wasn't there a little wiggle room in the budget to, at the very least, give Fister a plane ticket and hotel room to work him out and see what's left in the tank? And it sure looks like the Angels didn't take much risk or dollars in signing him. Strange.

Really, there is no good answer to your question.

It's funny, but Duffey might have been an answer but he's looking to be a much needed arm in the bullpen.

Maybe Mejia is allowed to make a case for himself and if he does, Hughes then becomes expendable?

Mejia would be the 5th starter right now. If you expend Hughes, you would need a non-Berrios and non-Mejia alternative. Right now the only ones are Gibson, Tepesch, and Wilk... which is why I think we should be considering Duffey (and checking out other arms that could help mitigate the loss of Duffey in the pen).

I forgot the Twins have only been using 4 starters. Uggh. Talk about unpalatable choices. Wilk didn't show me anything when pitched against KC. I think against a real team, like Baltimore or Houston, he'd have been eaten alive. Double uggh.

As for Gibson, I think he's a candidate for a change of scenery. I think Gibson has the ability but it just isn't working with the Twins. Nothing against Gibson, it's just the way it is sometimes.

I've now talked myself down to Tepesch. And I know nothing about him. Not good.

That depends on how you define "expendable". If you think the Pohlads are going to eat the $35 mil or so remaining on Hughes' contract, I think you are very mistaken.

Phil is still a fly ball pitcher and with diminished velocity, he absolutely has to have great command. I'm far from convinced that he can survive even with more changeups and breaking balls.

Guess they aren't even waiting to see if Gibson pitches well.

I legitimately thought this was fake at first. I mean, we were talking about Hughes disappearing on the DL with a mysterious injury earlier today...

It is time to cut the losses with the old FO - Hughes is either switched with Duffey or sent away with handshakes and a wave good-bye.  We do not need to repeat the Pelfrey scenario.

There is no indication that Gibson will throw well instead there is every indication he will throw poorly.

The Twins need to stop this nonsense. Dump Gibson, dump Hughes. Hopefully we can get cash for them. Give someone from AAA a shot and maybe pick up some junk from FA, better yet Trade Dozier for a starter.

You have options, but the Twins should make some type of move because if they dont given the current stats, we will continue to simply be an average team with no shot at the playoffs.

Alot of smoke and mirrors right now for this team.

i just assumed he has been pitching hurt since the spring. He's been getting hit very hard all season

I tend to think he would be better in the pen these days.  The problem is finding a pitcher to replace him.  Some people say we could find just about anyone, but then I guess they didn't see Tepesch's start or Gibson's starts.  Maybe they switch out Hughes for Wilk, I doubt Wilk would do any better though.

Correct me if I'm wrong here:

The Twins reportedly optioned Mejia back to AAA after he pitched tonight, but since he was called up under the doubleheader 26th-man rule, there's no minimum time he has to stay in the minors before they recall him again (as opposed to staying in AAA for, I think, a 10-day minimum if this had been a "regular" recall and option.)

They called up Gibson to start Monday and sent Hughes to the DL, but if there's no rainout, they would have needed another starter for Monday anyway. So the move created the roster spot they needed for Gibson, but Hughes' spot in the rotation is yet to be filled.

If I understand the 26th-man rule right, they'll be free to recall Mejia on or before the day that rotation spot comes up (again, pending there being no rainouts). So he seems like the obvious choice for the rotation spot, but they'll still have to make room on the roster for him.

If a rainout happens on the right day, they can skate by with 4 starters for another week. If they're able to play all the games, Mejia takes Hughes' spot next time around, and perhaps Breslow or (more likely) Wilk is on the bubble?

A lot of roster maneuvering, hard to keep straight.

It seemed pretty obvious that Hughes hadn't fully recovered from this past years surgery('s?)

Completely expected to hear this.  Now follow up with a lengthy rehab assignment and call up another young pitcher!

This is all correct.

I'll give the front office some credit, they are a little handcuffed with relievers lacking options, but they have managed to finesse the roster to play with a 8 man bullpen while still keeping 13 position players.

They'll run out of moves soon though, a lot fewer days off coming up.

But yes, Mejia can get recalled for his next start.

It would seem obvious since spring that Hughes wasn't right as the velocity was staying down, command ?  except that people seem to miss it.

I'll give Hughes some credit, he's clearly not right, hasn't been all year, but found a way to avoid getting pounded every game. The Twins even won 6 of his 9 starts.

But he needs some time to get right.
