Anyone finish up season 5 of House of Cards yet? The last 2 seasons have been kinda meh so I'm wondering if it's worth the time investment.

Love this show. The episode where they deviated from the main cast and the Thanksgiving one were my favourites from season 2.

The deviation from the cast episode is "New York, I Love You" and is one of the finest single episodes of television I've seen this decade.

 

Another great episode from season two is the dating episode, can't recall its name.

Watched episode one late last night. Looks like more of the same of Season 3&4; I'll push on though. Thought they would have announced this would be the final season but I haven't seen anything so I'd guess not.

 

It's going to be interesting to see how Netflix handles its popular shows. As far as I know they haven't had a popular one end on its own accords, only unsuccessful ones have ceased producing new episodes. Will they allow their flagship shows to end while still topical and well made? Like some cable stations. Or will they push the creative team to churn out dreck past its expiration date. Like the networks.

Just finished Keepers too. Just brutal . Really well done but ugh. Have a comedy queued up to watch after because it is draining.

I think they're going to keep churning out episodes until it's past the expiration date... 

House of Cards was great early on and had a ton of buzz... But now in its' 5th season, I don't really see or read the same kind of buzz for that show. Same thing applies to Orange is the New Black... I'm seeing they're about to release the 5th season, and personally I jumped off that show after season 2.

Even if we can't tell by the ratings, we may be able to determine it based on awards and water cooler attention. AMC let Breaking Bad and Mad Men end when the creators said their story had been told in it's entirety. They were still Emmy darlings when they folded up shop.

 

Kudos to AMC for not pushing harder for longer runs. But judging by their current stable of shows, I'd bet they are now conflicted, it's hard to get that kind of qualify consistently. No doubt Netflix has seen that.

 

HoC and OitNB should have already wrapped, but for all I know the creators were also wanting to tell more of the story even if it should have been over.

I'm only through the New York episode, but I agree. Those two and the first episode were my favorites. So unique.

Finished Master of None last night.  It just get better as the season went on. I loved it.

I've finished both the new HoC and OiTNB seasons. I would say the HoC season is something that gives the story either a new start, or a logical conclusion.

 

OiTNB was a cluster. I enjoy the characters, and I do like how they used one of the show's more popular characters for a possible change in the system, but that show is definitely set up for the next season with the ending.

 

Both are shows that I enjoy the characters on, so I keep following, but there were HoC episodes this season that were tough to follow they got so bogged down in trying to create drama.

I was really close to congratulating HOC for departing from the format of the last two seasons which was basically just a long lead up to elections. It looked like that was going to be another drawn out election process once again but then it surprised me and got through it in just a couple of episodes followed by multiple historically rare constitutional explorations of what could happen in our government. It seemed interesting even if quite implausible.

 

But then they took the implausibility to a new level with the last couple episodes. The reveal of the final scheme just made no damn sense.

 

I watch OitNB with my wife because it's one of the few shows we watch together anymore. This season's premise is different which is good. Still, it falls victim just as so many shows before it of softening the edges of previously unlikable characters. Racists are now not racist, bratty rich girls are now not bratty, oblivious and dumb characters gain societal insight, violent characters are now cuddly teddy bears. It's OK to have characters the audience doesn't like or identify with, not everyone has to transform for the better.

All these shows everyone talks about ... many I've never heard of before because ... I just don't watch that much 'regular' or even 'irregular' TV anymore. I do have a few guilty pleasures ... but will never reveal ... lol ... much like some of the 'chic lit beach lit' reading I do.

Interesting they are calling it Stranger Things 2.

 

Like it's a sequel, not a new season. Until recently, sequels have historically been panned and the 1980's might have been the worst offender when it comes to terrible sequels due to all the bad slasher films. I wonder if they are intentionally playing up that angle to set and then (hopefully) break expectations.

 

The first season wasn't really self-aware though, so I hope the second doesn't come off like it is.

Wow, that was a fast production cycle, as I believe Season 2 wasn't announced until well into the first season.   (Part me fears this will end up like the second-going of True Detective).
