twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 Winter sport: Curling I have always, always, always wanted to curl.Shuffleboard on ice. If you want to try curling, go curling. If you're ever up this way we'll go curling, you can't go a block up here without running into a curling rink.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 I wouldn't mind doing the 12 oz curl competition...Pfffft. 20oz is Olympic level. The 12oz is for qualifying.

I would love to play Badminton at a high level too. Love the fact that you can smack the shuttlecock as hard as you can, and it doesn't travel far. Went curling one time, and it was a blast! There's certainly an art to sweeping, and throwing the rock down the rink.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 Do you have to bring your own broom?Nope, just a good attitude and your beer drinking shoes.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 Heh, sounds like we could have a TD curling team. I think this needs to be a post-winter meltdown event.
jimmer Verified Member Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 Nope, just a good attitude and your beer drinking shoes.but only when drinking 20 oz beers, right? For 12 oz beers, flip-flops are completely acceptable :-)

Squirrel Community Moderator Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 Off-topic: Do we have any notion of a date for the Pub crawl yet?Good question. Hadn't heard anything. Maybe they decided not to do it this year?

kab21 Verified Member Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 Yup. I've said it before, but the last time I remember enjoying an Olympics was when I was living in Canada. None of this patched-together, tape delayed stuff to please the sponsors, only show the best Americans and/or high-profile sports and athletes. They showed a lot of it. All the 'lesser' sports. And not just medal-winning Canadians.Yes, we always watched the CBC coverage in the UP and I also watched it while living in Detroit. 10x better than NBC.
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 The only Olympic sport worth watching these days is hockey. When is that on?
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Did anyone watch Usain Bolt last night in the 100 M race? My god... Normal people who start like that finish in 7th or 8th place. The crazy thing was there didn't appear to be any moment in that race where he lost focus or panic during that atrocious start.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 And he still won by half a metre, crazy. That Degrasse kid is going to be a force in 2020.

Squirrel Community Moderator Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 And that's from the UK. Who cares about a little World's Record?Did you read to the bottom, and all the headlines throughout, and not just the title photo? My favorite from the Chicago Tribune ... 'Bears' wife wins medal'
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 This one was also ... hilarious ... but not ... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/olympics/2016/08/15/andy-murray-gives-brilliant-response-to-john-inverdale-gaffe-abo/

Seriously. There have been a ton of sexist comments/headlines during this Olympics but I can't fault a newspaper for going with that headline for Phelps, as he's the most decorated Olympian in history. We see stuff like that in major sports all the time. The Yankees make a minor move and get top billing for it; the Twins (or another mid-market team) make a bigger move and get second billing. Was sexism the root cause of that headline? Eh, hard to say but, again, we're talking about Michael Phelps. We've seen gallons of ink spilled over every little thing he does.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Did you read to the bottom, and all the headlines throughout, and not just the title photo? My favorite from the Chicago Tribune ... 'Bears' wife wins medal'Yeah that one stuck out to me as really bad. Who cares, at all, that she's married to a Chicago Bears fan? I guess they thought they could get more clicks from average joe who see "Footbaw wife? I like footbaw!"
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 It's impossible to watch on the West Coast, since it is ALL tape delayed. I hate sports when you know the outcome. Plus, I hate this 11 pm end of prime time, why isn't it all like Central time? I know the coverage isn't aimed at me, but how about some coverage, and not hours of fluff with minutes of competition? And, yes, I am not big on nationalism.
