Mauer to August waivers?

Just curious what the odds might be of JM7 getting placed on waivers this month and actually getting claimed. Thought of this after hearing the Texiera retirement news. There were some articles in NY recently about the Yankees getting back to leveraging their financial situation more, and Mauer's contract would be nothing for them to take on. If a scenario like that happened, would the Twins just let him go for nothing? How would it work with his full no-trade clause. Does a waiver claim technically constitute a trade that he could reject? All wishful thinking, but interesting.

Waste of time to put him on waivers.

1- nobody is going to claim that contract

2- Joe isn't going to waive his NTC

The tradition of putting guys on waivers, and then starting trade talks if anyone puts in a claim, reminds me a little of the notes passed back and forth in middle school:

Do you like me?

____ Yes

____ No

If the MLB internal web site has a GUI where you just click some boxes for whom you want to place on waivers, then it's not a waste of effort to include Mauer as a formality. But unless he has decided he wants to go, he's not going anywhere.

The repeated questions about Mauer are not bothersome. We have new people on this site all of the time. It is a reasonable question to ask given the number of 1Bs/DHs on the team.

Ya, do you remember a couple years ago when the news broke that Joe had been placed on waivers and everyone freaked out about it?? Then the twins came out and said that they put pretty much everyone through waivers to help guage their value.

100% that he gets put on waivers

0% that he gets claimed.

This is how it's gone for the last several years.

if you're playing the game, do you gamble that RA would let Joe go for nothing?

He can't.

Apparently Joe's 10&5 rights apply to waiver claims as well as trades.

The Yankees have started the process of cleaning their roster by trading away Chapman and Miller for a king's ransom and also Beltran.  In the process significantly strengthening their farm system.  This is something the Twins should have done over the last 4-5 years when it was obvious they were not competing. Teixeira is retiring.  Rodrigues is done.  Sabatthia to follow?  I doubt they will want to acquire aging veterans anytime soon.  In an interview following the trade deadline, Cashman indicated the old model (buying championships) was not longer working and the Yankees would be making adjustments.

Yeah, If only we had a chapman to trade away... :)

Perkins is probably the only guy who would have garnered something of value in a trade to be honest.

There should be no "probably" in that statement. Willingham had marginal value for awhile. Perkins was the only guy with legit "top 50 prospect" value.

The Yankees are in a very different situation.
