Arcia Traded to the Rays

While letting Arcia go was, IMO, dumb, we don't need a running tally of his hits

No hits for him yet tonight, an hour before first pitch.

Sorry, not prepared to read through 16 pages to see if this has been posted yet.

Does the PTBNL, if that is the avenue they choose to go, predetermined from a list of players at the trime of the trade, or can it go up or down depending on performance?

Trivia time - who was the first player to be traded for himself?

On April 25, 1962—before he even played a game for the Indians— Harry Chiti was acquired by the expansion New York Mets for a player to be named later. However, he was sent back to the Indians on June 15, 1962 after 15 games and a .195 batting average.[3] Since Chiti was the "player to be named later", he thus became the first player ever traded for himself. Three other players in history have been traded for themselves: Dickie Noles, Brad Gulden, and John McDonald. Chiti never played another major league game, spending two more years at Triple-A before retiring in 1964.

He's on an awfully long string of being hurt then....

Arcia did have a hip flexor strain in May last year. I did not know that it took years to recover.

Big misplay on a David Ortiz fly ball tonight. I'm not sure if the ball hit the catwalk or not. With Arcia, you can never tell.

It didn't hit the catwalk.

So it is both sides keeping this game alive. Good to know, good to know :)

What you would hear from the Twins broadcasters, if that was Grossman instead of Arcia, is "ball was hit incredibly high with a lot of backspin, tough catch to make looking up into that ceiling after a long run like that." But it's Arcia so it's just a big misplay.

Why did you pluralize year? He was awful last year.

As documented in this and the other Arcia thread, he's hit well this year when given continuous playing time.

What's hyperbole?  We have 13 pitchers on the roster.  That means we have a 3 man bench pretty much every night.  That's terrible strategy for one, but beyond that, a handful of those guys in that 13 man staff are not worth risking anyone to waivers for.  Certainly not someone who hit like Arcia did his first two years.

We're talking about a guy who had an OPS 200 points higher than our current top prospect in CF and just turned 25.  And we let him go rather than Neil Ramirez.  Or using an option.

Semantics. Sorry, I thought you were referring to the bullpen pitchers not the entire pitching staff. Normally starters are not lumped in with the relievers.

And he has not hit well in streaks when given playing time. That information is not well documented in these threads but easy to find. Then there was the 5 steps to the right or left defense he was able to play. Good defense only matters to the critics when they want to criticize. Arcia's UZR150 makes Hunter's defense last year look a lot better

I've been wanting to type this for weeks.......the use of "of" instead of "have" has really been getting to me.

Blame the education system, not the poster.

If this is all so obviously true, then why didn't Terry DFA him or trade him at any point after the completion of the 2014 season- in 2014 when his potential still held highest value- all the way up to Spring Training in 2016? The fact remains... it's still on management that he was occupying a valuable roster spot and wasting away on the bench for 2.5 months.

I would love to be in a league with you or be a GM in any type of league with you running a different club.  Wait and pounce on the mistakes because you are not patient. This is a long term process,  it may be 2 years before the starters with upside get here.

Whaa...? This makes no sense in response to the topic you replied to, at all.

Nobody could do that.  I still think he could be adequate, given more playing time and more experience.  He has some limitations with the physical tools, but I always thought he could get quite a bit better with experience.  I don't see much hope for Sano in the outfield.

This.. The guy obviously has limitations. He's definitely a non-intuitive defensive player, but athletic enough to possibly become adequate in RF given some time. And that's why the decision to keep moving him around in the OF between RF and LF,-when he'd practically only played just one position in his entire professional career- was pretty shortsighted on the part of the Twins.

(And no, this isn't second-guessing, it was noted by many sources at the time he was moved out of RF to LF by Torii Hunter that Arcia has never felt comfortable in LF).

Meanwhile Robbie Grossman has continued his extremely predictable crash back to earth.

.170/.302/.264 in his last 15 games and it keeps getting worse and worse.

I wouldn't be surprised if Arcia passes him OPS wise by the all star break.

Meanwhile Park continues to embarrass himself at the plate as the average has dipped below .200 and the OPS below .690. In his last 30 games Park is sporting a nifty .123/.208/.236 line with a 39.8% k rate that would make even Juan Castro blush. Why isn't he in AAA again?

You can't make it up.

Park is here till the 6th. Can you imagine the embarrassment of having Park em day, or whatever they call it without the Park? The problem is not with TR, it's with the promotions dept. they just have to get these bobblehead and jersey days set up earlier in the year! :)

They had a kids Rosario jersey day a few weeks ago.

Wasn't it the Rays that had a Jason Tyner bobblehead day about a month after he was traded?

Don't hate the player, hate the game? :)

But seriously, folks, this is TD, not some Internet site or anything, so... MODERATOR NOTE: Enough with the grammar flames. Seriously.

If there is one team that would refuse to bring up Sano Until after the Park promotion it would be the Twins.

Hopefully I am wrong. But Park needs to be in AAA now, and Sano needs to be back up now.

This was in response to the number of comments I have seen, the one quoted was one, where just because you feel you need to move a player, you just move them without regard for return.  Why would any GM trade with you, unless they felt they were getting a great deal, when you where virtually giving assets away.

And yet a guy with worse numbers and even less upside is still on the 25 man roster....(Santana)

This is a terrible move for a rebuilding team to make, no doubt about it.

Arcia has no fit with the Twins at all.  He's not good in the OF and blocks Kepler if he does play out there.  DH is filled by Park or Sano.

Santana at least has value as a late inning pinch runner or defensive replacement.

A pinch runner who is tied for the league lead in caught stealing even though he's only attempted 17 steals and a defensive replacement who isn't a good defender and not a better defender than anyone he replaces.
