It is kind of "fun", in a sadomasochistic way.  I have other things I'd rather spend my time on and my skills aren't good enough to meet my own standards (taping drywall among them), so I bite the bullet and pay a professional to do somethings.  I stick to carpentry and the occasional minor electrical and plumbing modification.

Exactly.  I was joking as I was replacing my stairs that I'd never hire myself.  It took far longer than I was willing to pay for.  They were exposed wood treads and risers, so I took my time and often measured three times so I could cut once.  It took me about 6 hours to actually replace them, plus the time to stain and put three coats of poly on.  Then there is the fun with the wood putty!  They look very good though.  I impressed myself even.  That's always a great feeling that almost makes the swearing, bleeding, and funny looks from my wife worth it.

Well, sad to say, if you've got any talent at all for that sort of thing, you're almost better to do it yourself, because it's so difficult to find a decent contractor these days. Anyway, it really does sound like a fun project. I know I'd have enjoyed it.

It's really hard to find a contractor that is as cheap as me too.  So there is that.  

 

I built houses while I was in college, so I do enjoy the carpentry.  Regardless of what I'm tinkering with, it's usually not fun while I'm doing it.  I usually dread starting it.  But once it's done, I feel like I had fun.  The satisfaction of doing that stuff is nice too.

One thing is certain.  It's much easier to destroy then put everything back together again.  The reconstruction phase can be the most agonizing step, especially the drywall work....shudders.

For the life of me I don't understand the strange looks I get from fellow amateur brewers when I tell them that often I just eat the malted barley, the hops flowers, and the yeast. Of course I wash it down with only the purest mountain spring water.

I kind of liked remodeling, but my wife hates the swearing, and if we ever get another home, I think I'm banished from anything other than electrical and gardening.....

 

LOL.  My father in law is like that.  He helped us remodel our first house in Buffalo and it was non-stop cursing.   Every miscue was an f-bomb or something like that.  Actually quite hilarious and broke up the monotony of sanding hundreds of linear feet of drywall joints and painting room after room.  Well.... maybe torture best describes it.

Yeah, that's not a good sign.

 

Demolition can be therapeutic.  Remember that for the next project.  Just make sure that it doesn't get "overly therapeutic" and go too far.  That's counterproductive to the therapy.

Our daughters have tried, the only thing that saved them was a quickly diminishing sense of family. . You, as a complete stranger to her would likely perish, lost in the dietris of one of the closets. You will be sorely missed!
