Byron's - a great Italian beef spot in Chicago. Which Byron provides more value to me in 2017?

Hmm ... didn't know of this place ... another 'iconic' place to try, but I don't expect anything to ever beat Hot Doug's, which is now closed.

Just stopping by to say that I love this thread. TD posters posting the meat so we don't have to read all the live chats during the work days.

Also having Jack Goin participate for a while was awesome.

On Castro (this is a summary):

His range of potential offensive outcomes is arguably larger than those of any other player in this group. I’m taking the glass-half-full approach with Castro, and expect him to move near the top of this list in the next year or two as he taps into some power.

You Chicagoans and your hot beef sandwiches.  I don't get the appeal.

(And I miss me some duck fat fries as well.  That and Smoke were always must-stops for us)

Do you mean Smoque? Heh.

I'm not a big Chicago beef fan. I have yet to go to Portillo's which people exclaim, 'You haven't????????!!!!!!!!!' as if I've committed some mortal sin. But Hot Doug's was amazing for all kinds of hot dogs. Looks like Byron's also does 'dogs, but still can't imagine anyone coming close to Doug's.

Snob.....and yes, I meant Smoque.  :)

I like Portillos, but I don't gush about them either.  I don't understand the appeal of a soggy roast beef sandwich.  Just give me a couple Chicago Dogs or a greasy Gyro and I'm far happier.

Lol ... I haven't even been there ... although I did try their brisket at an event that was catered by them. But friends of mine who are real BBQ hounds all claim they are the best in the city.

Yup, pretty much this. Why I miss Doug's vs having never been to a Portillo's.

(Sorry to derail the thread, but food is important, so enjoy the aside!)

You should definitely go to Smoque.  As should anyone else that goes to Chicago.  Everything on their menu is ridiculously good.  And the baked beans have huge hunks of meat in it that they scavenge from cooking the other meat.  I can't recommend it enough.

Me either, but Vienna Beef hot dogs- accept no substitute, and DO NOT leave off the celery salt.

And the Portillo's Italian Bomber is to die for.  It's the Po'boy of Chicago.

Glen Perkins just tweeted to KLAW how fantastic KLAW's book was, and that everyone should read it. Must have received an advance copy....

Preordered it at Amazon.  About $18 and change with prime.  Looks interesting indeed.

I suspect that Perkins will have plenty of time on his hands for reading...

David Schoenfield said this about Buxton:

'Defense matters. And he finally started showing some of the potential with the bat down the stretch. He's not going to be the big star he was once projected to become -- too many strikeouts, not enough walks -- but he's going to be a nice player, a guy who is good enough to start on a playoff team.'

Well that's a tad sobering.

I don't get hot beef sandwiches... Chicago style pizza on the other hand....

Scorching hot take alert:

Deep dish pizza is overrated. Too much crust...

Thin crust >>>>>>> Deep Dish

EDIT: There's one exception besides thin crust. And that is Detroit-style pizza. Sourdough crust with the cheese baked on it, toppings, and sauce on top.

Yes, but there were some saying that he might never be anything at all like what he was once projected.

This at least suggests a quality CF.

Setup lines like this don't happen every day.

shoot....how did I not think this trough. Seriously though, I love the sandwich and really do want to know if I can get one here. Otherwise, I have to wait until we drive down and see the in laws to get one again.

Don't get me wrong, I like thin crust too...  but Chicago style deep dish is yummy... nothing like 2 inches of cheese and meet to go with some crust...  You can always cut away most of the crust... but you cannot load that much topping on a thin crust pizza.

Pizza on the other hand. I could eat that 7 days a week and not get sick of it.

Sorry for the thread jack ... I take full responsibility. Lots of food talk goes on in the Sports Bar forum and it's pretty fun, I suggest we drop that here and get back to fangraphs discussion, and move the food talk to the Sports Bar. Thanks. And I'm hungry. :)
