Neftali Feliz Clears Waivers

I'd take a flyer on him.  He's only 27, controllable through next year.  Maybe Allen and Guardado can find his flaws and straighten him out.  He's a low risk, high reward kind of guy and we would only have to pay him major league minimum, because Texas is on the hook for his salary for this season.

He still could accept a AAA assignment by Texas, so he's not a free agent quite yet.

NOW he's a free agent, and Texas isn't on the hook for his salary.  He IS controllable through next season.

Detroit DFA'd Chamberlain and another pitcher recently and now they're going after Feliz?

Desperation, thy name is Detroit.

Threw 5 consecutive pitches to Mauer at 97mph of higher.  Couldn't we have been a bit more aggressive in signing him?  Texas is on the hook for all of his salary exceeding the league minimum.  I presume some kind of bonus was offered by the Tigers and/or others to sign.

Really surprised that the Twins didn't get Feliz. Instead, he takes out the Twins today. With all the scrap heap pitchers that Ryan has signed, this is a real reclaimation that could be one of the best, and it would have been for very cheap. Baffling to me why Ryan let the Tigers get him instead of the Twins.

This is not true. As a 5 year guy, Texas is still on the hook for his salary that they are contracted for, minus the prorated minimum that the team that signs him pays. This was a no brainer. Perhaps Feliz still was able to pick what team he would go to, and saw the Tigers as a better option to win than the Twins?

He was able to pick his team and no team could provide additional incentives because his salary was already locked in. I wonder if a shot to close had something to do with it.

What I don't understand is why Texas gave up on him.

No one claimed him either. I realize if they claimed him, that the claiming team would pick up his contract, but if Felix is all the way back, that shouldn't matter. I wonder if he'll be able to hit the same velo his next time out. He hadn't pitched in more than a week.

I think you hit on the answer. He will get a shot at closing in Detroit.

I mean the fact that Texas wasn't even able to trade him for a PTBNL I guess shows the MLB consensus on him, I would have liked to grab him, however the twins are already "stashing" one guy in the pen on Graham. Whoever the twins get needs to be able to step in ASAP to the 8th inning.

This one is rather baffling. After Feliz cleared wiavers it would have been easy to work out a deal by offering to pay a bit more than the minimum salary.

Instead they waste time on Scott Atchison.

Doesn't work that way.

What doesn't work that way? The Atchison part has nothing to do with Felix, but I think Texas could have traded Felix rather than ask him to accept a minor league assignment.

I didn't consider a trade before he cleared. That would have made some sense.

I was thinking once he cleared Twins offering more money was not an option.

Atchison was probably not related.

Because if he gets cut we want a guy that can't make it in the Detroit pen?

No I was saying that he has nothing left and will be cut because of that, just gave up an absolute BOMB to Ortiz. I don't want him on the twins unless they can send him to AAA.

You got a beef with the Redwings now too?

Every time this thread gets bumped makes me think Feliz has been DFA'd yet again.

It very well might be true within the next few hours. Kinda sad to see him fall like this, looked like a real special pitcher when he first came into the league.
