My Dozier, I think I'll keep him

He really is a special player, and it is all on display tonight. His fielding is gold-glove worthy, he gets on base, scores runs, flashes power. 

 

I know there are some folks who would sell high, but he could be a team leader going forward, and is in a favorable contract situation for years.

I agree that Dozier is probably not going anywhere,  I would still sell high( It would be the only way to bring a starting outfielder or a better pitcher to the Twins).  Still look at Brandon Phillips as what Dozier is likely to become in his 30's (a way overpriced good fielding second baseman with some pop) Cincinnati can almost not give him away and am afraid the Twins would have to overpay to keep Dozier at a time when they are 2 years or less away from having to spend big money to keep there superstars(who we all hope will develop)

Dozier has the third best OPS and fourth best WAR of AL second basemen. There are seven second basemen with a WAR of more than 4.5 (offense only) and then no with even a 2.0. I guess that means that seven teams can be satisfied at second and everyone else will be looking for a replacement.

Maybe the Twins can package Dozier and some mid-high range prospects in return for Phillips, his massive contract, and Cueto. That's a scenario I could see moving Dozier.

The Twins have the Eduardos, either of which could handle 2B if Santana is at SS. Preferably SanDana stays away from SS, because I don't think he's an MLB defender at SS. So maybe SanDana plays 2B or CF, and maybe have the Eduardos at SS and 2B if Santana is in the OF.

 

There are options. And Gardy likes the Eduardo twins, so if he's around, there's no telling who'll be getting ABs for the Twins next season. He's a wiley coyote.

While I agree with you for the most part, teams also don't make bobbleheads of players they plan on trading.  I've heard of plenty of "X-player Bobblehead Night" wrecked by a trade. 

 

The Twins have no business trading one of their best players until they have a clear major league ready player available.  Hopefully we learned from trading both Revere and Span when Hicks wasn't ready.  Make a player come up and force the issue.

If the Twins, and fans in general think he can play SS, doesn't it also stand to reason he can play 2B?

 

I'd be much more willing to have SanDana play 2B than SS, if for whatever reason Silky Smooth (Dozier, that's Briand Dozier, for those of you that don't know, he was in a band called Silky Smooth at Nebraska) isn't there to man the middle bag.

And you'd open a hole at second base. Best case scenario is that your net gain is zero, while your net loss could be substantial if things go wrong.

 

The Twins need to keep their good players, not trade them away. If Rosario or Polanco or somebody looks capable of taking over second base, then you trade Dozier.

Agree completely.  I said essentially the same in another thread.  Trading Dozier to make room for Rosario or Polanco is akin to trading Span & Revere so Hicks can play OF.  How did that work?  Make the minor league guys come up and perform before you trade away good players.  It especially doesn't make sense while Dozier is cheap.  When he starts getting expensive in arbitration the maybe you think about it.

Personally, I think Dozier is overrated.  A .240 BA and 120+ K average over the past 2 yrs doesn't really cut it with me.  If other teams think as highly of Dozier, and many here do, then he must be worth a couple fine minor leaguers or a young starter in the bigs with a good upside.

Inversely, GMs who cavalierly trade away very good players without competent backups behind them don't belong in the big seat.

Well, sure... But Dozier was a 4.6 WAR player in 2014.

As with moth arguments, I think the answer lies somewhere in the middle. That lovely "gray" zone. Simply put, if the right trade is available, you make the move.

 

If a team comes calling with a very highly regarded pitcher (prospect or otherwise) you have to listen if you're the Twins.

You don't shop him just to move him. There's value to keeping him as a member of the Twins - but if the right deal comes across your desk - you'd be foolish to refuse it outright because "Dozier is a franchise guy".

Despite almost the exact same BA, Dozier's OBP went up substanially this year.  He walked almost 90 times and was hit by pitches seven or eight times.  The strikeouts are high, but he did have close to 700 PAs, so that percentage is lower than it might appear.

Yeah... Dozier's K rate dropped 1.2% and his BB rate went up 4.4%.
