Bailey Ober needs to be a Primary Starter!!
JD-TWINS commented on Doc Munson's blog entry in Fantasy GM
Maeda was primarily a starter for the Dodgers. At the end of two different seasons he was the low man and got slotted into the Pen. That said, I agree Ober should be the 5th starter. My logic is two pronged. First, Ober is not durable and if he’s pitching well coming out of Spring Training, don’t disrupt that and take advantage of as many innings as we can get out of him while healthy. No reason to have him burning up innings in St. Paul. Second, Maeda is coming off elbow surgery at 35. Having him strengthen our Pen out of Spring Training seems logical. If Ober fades in June/July & Maeda has only thrown 45 innings through June, he’s ready to stretch out over a month and we’re set. -
Ranking the Most Improved AL Central Teams for 2023
JD-TWINS replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I hated trading Arraez since it seemed we could have signed a FA starter and kept Luis. After looking at how we have changed overall from the beginning of last year …..the exchanges we’ve made vs. last year’s club are Kirilof for Arraez, Miranda for Urshella, Gallo for Cave/Celestino/Garlick & Vasquez for Sanchez. Kirilof - Polanco - Larnach - Buxton all hoping for better health than in ‘22. PITCHING:López for Bundy, Mahle for Paddack, & Maeda for Archer PEN, with Pagan in the 7 or 8 spot vs. 1 or 2 last year, this is a reality exchange. Others are López for Joe Smith, an experienced Moran for Duffy…..Megill, Jax, & Duran with experience all seem to be an upgrade. AAA starters…..there are 3-4 guys that have pitched in the SHOW and will be ready if there are issues……much better than last year!! WINDER - OBER - VARLAND - SWR Having a starting SS as our utility guy in Farmer & a Gold Glove back-up in the OF in Taylor is way better than guys we used in ‘22. Gordon can play OF & he can hit, unknown going into ‘22. JUST HAS TO BE A BETTER OUTLOOK THAN LAST YEAR…..don’t understand the reluctance in saying that? Farm has more guys that have or are maturing to come up if needed.- 27 replies

Is This Where Byron Buxton’s Injuries End?
JD-TWINS replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Line-up v. LH pitching…..roughly 30 games: Taylor CF - Buxton DH - Correa SS - Miranda 1B - Farmer 3B - Polanco 2B - Jeffers C - Larnach LF - Kepler RF Bench: Vázquez - Kirilof - Gordon - Gallo……Vázquez is only other RH hitting option & needs to sit with Jeffers in Line-up. No issue with Buxton in the DH spot! V. RH pitching, I think Buxton DH’s 20 games against historically favorable guys. 80 starts in CF. Frequent line-up v. RH pitching: Gordon CF - Kirilof 1B - Correa SS - Larnach DH - Gallo LF - Polanco 2B - Vázquez C - Kepler RF - Miranda 3B -

If Buxton plays 95 games in CF v. 80 games in CF & 50 at DH……how is there no value in him being in our line-up 35 more starts? Taylor - Farmer - Jeffers will start v. every LH starter we face. Gordon’s offense v. RH pitching is on par or better than Buxton’s, other than in HR’s. He started 33 games in CF in ‘22. With Taylor being weak v. RH pitching & Buxton needing to be careful with health, seems Gordon is the right fit in CF. Gordon between Gallo & Kepler is just fine defensively. .272 BA in 405 AB’s & 28 doubles & 9 HR in his first real opportunity in SHOW. Started 98 games in OF & it was his first year ever playing OF. Don’t see an issue. -
Are You Ready for Emilio Pagan to Work?
JD-TWINS replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agreed on the López v. Pagan….both???? Can’t believe I’m saying Pagan seems to have more probability for success based on history. Thielbar is a concern just because one gets to the end eventually…….hope he’s somewhere near ‘22! Moran seems like a guy developing normally and gaining command & experience along the way. Looking for him to become a regular use guy up around 60-70 innings. Megill - if he develops a 3rd pitch for show he’s got the stuff with his curve & fastball to be a core guy every 2-3 days. I think Jax is solid and any drift over the year is normal up & down on the mound. Duran - hope for health - he should be good.- 63 replies

Is This Where Byron Buxton’s Injuries End?
JD-TWINS replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
92 games is most in a season other than 140 games 5 or 6 years ago. Shooting for 145 games is nuts to me. I hope Byron can start 80 games in CF v. RH pitching……….30 games at DH v. LH pitching………20 games at DH v.RH pitching. Taylor starts in CF against LH pitching…..30 games…Gordon starts 50 games in CF against RH pitching. -
Doc - I get the ambivalence with the Gallo signing & probably not worth too much energy here - you’re being nice with “the league’s figured him out….” comment. With the .199 career BA I don’t know if he’s ever figured out the league? …………… Alcala is talented but too on the edge for me without a month or three in St Paul……would prefer he starts across the river with a FA signing of Hand! Hoping to see LF split 80 games Gordon - 50 games Larnach - 30 games Gallo……….80 games for Larnach at DH. Kirilof should get 110 games at 1B …..Slow with Kirilof but still e….Gallo there 20 games……..Miranda 30 games. ………………. Lopez has been in the SHOW essentially, since 2018. I don’t think he’s very good between the ears……sure seems to have a good pitch mix & velocity to succeed. First year as a reliever in 2022. ERA’s - 5.03, 6.33, 6.69, 6.07, & 2.54 in ‘22 (4.37 in MN) Not sure he should be our choice to make the club before Pagan……that’s a BIG SHIFT for me!! Pagan numbers since 2017 - ERA’s 3.22, 4.35, 2.31, 4.50, 4.83, & 4.43. Equally as good of stuff as compared to López. I don’t need to see either of these guys progress from our 6th-8th guy in the Pen …….not needed to be high leverage guys. Just keep us in the game ………keep the ERA’s under 3.75 and walks in a normal range of 2 - 3 walks/inning. HR down to 1 per 9 innings. If one of them can be in Jax company we’ll be in great shape.

Are You Ready for Emilio Pagan to Work?
JD-TWINS replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Exactly…….IMO, both he & López need to be working with a sports psychologist & whoever cured the Lion in the Wizard of Oz! They fold up and just throw straight fastballs down the middle way too often under pressure. BOTH have STUFF to be really good relievers but the intestinal fortitude doesn’t seem to be there. Physically, maybe it’s they don’t have enough command in the zone? Can’t just pay them & live with that!- 63 replies

Twins PECOTA Projections: The Pitchers
JD-TWINS replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not sure what is driving the forecast??…..only really have a good understanding of ERA. Pretty sure if our Staff has a cumulative ERA of 3.30 we are going to be awfully difficult to beat!!! WARP of 14 plus seems positive as well.- 27 replies

I like Balazovic as this year’s Duran. Good stuff!! If we can get him working in short situations in St. Paul for 2 months he could be the guy in 6th or 7th……2-3 times per week. Worth considering……Sands has got to be the gimmick reliever, not a starter …….,,,Winder’s shoulder issues seem to make relief seem like the only way to stay healthy. With these 3 additional pieces in relief roles One or Two gotta be effective!

Twins Daily 2023 Top Prospects: #1 Brooks Lee, SS
JD-TWINS replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Julien is our organization’s #15 prospect - only plays 2B now. Can’t have rookie 3B - 2B (Lewis & Lee) and have their back-up be a rookie. This is why I stick with the lower risk veteran, Farmer, in ‘24. Larnach/Kirilof at DH &1B vs. RH pitching. I don’t see Larnach playing in OF more than half time. -
Twins Daily 2023 Top Prospects: #1 Brooks Lee, SS
JD-TWINS replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Looks like we got our 2nd baseman……Mr. Lee as well as our 3B …….Mr. Lewis starting in ‘24. With these two guys developing and the ability to roll Larnach - Miranda - Kirilof principally through the 1B - DH rolls is pretty exciting. Kirilof plays 1B 100 games - DH 30 games Miranda plays 3B 30 games - 1B 60 games - DH 30 games Larnach at DH 50 games - LF 80 games Buxton in CF 80 games - DH 50 games Gordon LF 80 games - CF 50 games Same 2 Catchers I’d keep Farmer for ‘24 for veteran depth at SS & 2B RF is up in the air…. Maybe a platoon of Walner & Rodriguez OR dare I say, an improved version of Max Kepler from ‘23? Rodriguez - Buxton - Gordon - CC - Larnach - Kiriloff - Lee - Lewis - Vazquez Bench: Miranda - Jeffers - Kepler - Farmer Martin/Polanco/Walner are options …..even Gallo, if he goes off this year. We’ll have to see what ‘23 brings! Mr. Lee will be in the line-up in ‘24!! -
Give Hand a $3.0 million base with 2-3 incentive levels that could get him to $4.5 million, otherwise he’ll wait. It’s a slap in the face to a guy who has had a good run for 7 years…….not the same guy but he did have a 2.8 ERA last year for people that still pay attention to ERA. What are we paying Pagan & P. Lopez?

Twins Daily 2023 Top Prospects: #2 Royce Lewis, SS
JD-TWINS replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I like Gordon - like him a lot! I’ve often wondered why nobody has mentioned him as trade material for pitching in the past……he’s got a better upside than many of our other options for other teams. It seems that even though he started almost 70% of games last year and 65% in OF, people see him as a Utility IF. As you mention, Gordon could be part of a trade just because he’s of more value than any other OF except Buxton. I think it would be short sighted! I see Gordon playing LF (80 games) & backing up Buxton in CF (50 games) v. RH pitching for the next 3 years or more!! He’s all upside, from 28 doubles & 9 HR in 405 AB’s & first healthy season (gained 25 lb in ‘22) & first season in OF. He’s a potential 20 HR & 40 double guy with 575 AB’s as he gains strength & experience. He’s got all the upside any of the RH hitting IF’s that we want to convert to OF. Excited for Lewis to join Big Club - I see him displacing Kepler or Gallo around the trade deadline on the roster. If either of those 2 aren’t performing or if they are both performing, one will be traded to help somebody else with OF needs. -
Is a Deal with Chaska’s Brad Hand in the Cards?
JD-TWINS replied to Lou Hennessy's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Pitching isn’t all about spin rates or velocity or strike outs. Gotta have decent stuff but Hand’s attraction is his experience & what he has between the ears! Pagan - López - Hand in the 8th with RH, LH, RH batters coming up. Who do you pick? Not close for me - sign Hand!! -

Not Pagan! -
Right field bleachers are a good seat - right on top of the field! Have lived in Cincinnati for 32 years…..from Red Wing. Check out “OTR”…..,Over the Rhine ……NW area of downtown. Lots of restaurants & bars to investigate. Northern Row Brewery on far east side of OTR is cool place - old skulling boats & industrial feel from 1800’s. Try the “Turf Club”…..on east side of city……best burgers found anywhere!!! Montgomery Inn Boathouse is a big Cinti tourist stop - it’s cool. East of the park about 1 mile. Really Great Ribs!!! See ya at the Park!

Is There More to Trevor Megill?
JD-TWINS replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
3rd pitch development is key. Guys get ahead in the count & sit on his curve or fastball. If you’re looking exclusively fastball - you can hit it, even at 98MPH 3rd pitch can just be for show 15% of the time. Needs to be an expectation with hitter that something other than curve/fastball is on the way. His curve is good - 98MPH is good…..needs 3rd pitch and a well called game from Vázquez/Jeffers!! -

JD-TWINS replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Unfair to lump Moran in with Pagan & López. He’s. it a problem! -
I like Joe Mauer & respect his numbers & career a bunch……. if he tares his knee up like Oliva after 8 years his path is doomed as well. Not his fault he stayed more healthy!!……………Oliva is my 4th guy!
-
He made $6 million last year and had a 2.80 ERA……pretty sure that’s what his agent is telling our FO! He’s gotta be at $4.5 - $5.0 million minimum. Like his experience!!!! Not his first rodeo. We have 3 outs to get in the 8th with 2 of 3 guys being LH hitters OR even 1 of the 3 guys being a LH hitter. Pick one: Pagan - Hand - López?? Come on - sign him!

Can Nick Gordon Handle Third Base?
JD-TWINS replied to Ted Wiedmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Julian or Lee will get dropped in at 3B before Gordon. Lots of durability between Miranda & Farmer. Gordon is officially an Outfielder unless there’s an in-game emergency. -
One Guy's Take on the Roster Makeup
JD-TWINS commented on IndianaTwin's blog entry in Un/Necessary Sports Drivel
Interesting overview. Pitching makes perfect sense to me. Everyday guys. Here we go again……. Gordon played 6% of last year’s games in IF……..only because we were out of bodies and he was still standing. He started 60% of the games in OF ……40% in LF & 20% in CF. (I see it growing to 50% in LF & 30% in CF in ‘23) Don’t see how a guy has BA that’s 3rd or 4th on roster in ‘22 & has 28 doubles in 405 AB’s …..plays OF in first real full season in SHOW …..starts 2/3 of games on schedule & is slated as our 6th infielder in ‘23? 1B is Kirilof/Miranda/Gallo Farmer will play 30 games v. LH pitching at 3B, while Miranda moves to 1B. When Miranda - CC - Polanco rest, that’s another 25 starts each IF everyone stays healthy. I can’t believe that FO would expect Taylor to play CF in front of Gordon v. RH pitching! Taylor is an INSURANCE policy against major health issues. He’s the CF v. LH pitching while Buxton DH’s…..30 games. Buxton tries to start 80 games in CF. Gordon starts 50 games in CF. Taylor pinch hits v. LH pitching - pinch runs - late inning Defense as needed. A true utility player! Larnach is DH - some LF. Gallo is some LF 30 games…..RF 50 games…….1B 20 games…….DH 15-20 games. Kepler is 110 games in RF. Everyone plays 110 - 135 games except Taylor & Jeffers…..maybe 75 games & 55 games respectively.
