  1. I hope they have a plan to relieve Pagan and Megill... and when the injuries inevitably hit.
  2. O'Neill's cap hits could get up to $23M / $25M the next two seasons if you go for the max restructure... so I'd rather not push his salary back too far. The point of the plan was to differentiate from my past two years where I did just that - I traded away Kirk both times, so I feel like it would have been same-y to just do that again, so instead I tried a "all-in" plan. They traded for Hockenson with the intention to extend him, and good TEs can play into their 30s. I think Hock is a good one, so even in a nuclear reboot they should extend him. The alternative is to trade him for less draft capital than what you traded him for at the deadline last year, which doesn't make a lot of sense.
  3. Yup, Rojas was a 2.5 WAR player at SS for Miami last year despite a .605 OPS, and the previous three years combined he was a .732 OPS hitter. He is a fine replacement and Farmer is not an improvement... not to mention, we need him. Gordon is an outfielder who can handle himself at 2B, but is not going to be playing SS again in the majors.
  4. I wrote an extensive Offseason Guide on what the Vikings might do - you can find it here, but here's a preview:
  5. I don't see them eating $2M after he spends a month with the team, the plan seems to be that he will be a bench bat.
  6. Analytics suggest bad/mediocre starters shouldn’t go more than 5. Just wait for when our starters start going deeper into games, folks here will claim “Rocco has turned a new leaf!”, but in reality it will be because he has a quality rotation of arms he can trust.
  7. Agreed, I've been high on Alcala but he was trash for a good portion of 2021, they never demoted him but he certainly deserved it. I'm also going to need to see more than just 18 good innings to declare him a good reliever.
  8. I said at the start of free agency that it feels like our FA money is always spent on hitters... and here we are, they've spent 100% of their FA money on hitters, only adding Lopez's salary via a trade. I'm not complaining, just pointing it out.
  9. This feels like a stopgap for Polanco potentially leaving... or not being healthy, I guess. It's hard to say what's up, but seeing as how he's played a lot of 2B and Farmer is more likely to back up 3B/SS, it seems like they are expecting someone in the starting lineup to be out. Yeah, there doesn't seem to be much faith in the prospects. Julien is close but clearly not close enough to prevent a signing like this, and neither is Austin Martin.
  10. I'm had some negative things to say about Twins players/prospects lately... but Rodriguez is a stud and I think he's still underrated. Dude's got a massive ceiling. Just stay healthy, please!
  11. Eh, his fastball doesn't have enough movement and it's too hittable, and he hung too many breaking balls right down the middle, leading to the poor results we saw last year. I get why they're giving him another go-around, but this reeks of a May DFA after he bottoms out.
  12. That would be a perfect way to end the offseason!
  13. I'm torn on SWR... the raw numbers are good, but the scouts aren't high on him due to command issues and his stuff not being great. I just want to see some Twins-developed starting prospects break into the rotation and keep their job... in my time observing Twins pitching prospects, approximately one prospect has lived up to my expectations as a starting pitcher (Berrios). Please, SWR and Varland, change this! Break the cycle of futility!
  14. It was more that the Jays weren't as high on him as the prospects evaluators were, so they sold high on him. I couldn't find the source, but I'll post it if I can find it.
  15. I agree with all this, I just don't get the Arraez comparisons. Martin hit .241 in his second go-around at AA with no power, Arraez hit in the .290s his first time around. Frankly I don't care a whole ton about the power, the issue is that outside of drawing walks he is a poor hitter against AA competition, and he's also not on track to be a plus defender. I don't get their insistence of keeping him at SS when it's obvious he won't stick there in the majors. His much better hitting in the fall league is encouraging, but he needs to do a whole lot more to regain his former prospect status - he was considered 1A/1B with Royce Lewis last year, now he looks like he might end up being a utility/bench bat. There was a tweet in the Berrios trade discussion about how the Blue Jays don't trade away top prospects that they believe in...
  16. Disaster averted! Good hire.
  17. Jeffers has a 161 wRC? Dang, it must be like 25 against righties, then. This isn’t exactly convincing me that we didn’t need Urshela, but it’s better than expected. Depends on how healthy the lineup can stay…
  18. I agree, I would substitute Urshela for one of Kepler or Gallo and I think the lineup would be better. Gio probably doesn't have a 3.1 WAR season again in 2023, but I'm worried about where our run production is going to come from with Gio and Arraez removed from the lineup. Gotta hope the shift bans turn Gallo and Kepler into better hitters. It's not an egregious move, as I believe in Miranda and Correa is back, but I would have wanted more than a #30-40 prospect back for Gio.
  19. I agree, get Sands and Henriquez in the pen at AAA as soon as possible and let's see what they've got. Ober definitely stays in the rotation, we will need him sooner than later. I'm torn on Winder, I'd keep him as a starter for now.
  20. Chafin would certainly be an upgrade, obviously price is the issue there. I'd also take Fulmer back since it appears that teams aren't willing to pay what he's asking for. I'd ditch Megill in a heartbeat, and of course Pagan too but we know he's staying. I wouldn't be upset if we don't add another arm with our salary around $150M, but it also wouldn't shock me if we reach midseason and we need to make a couple bullpen trades to keep it together.
  21. It feels like our #15-30 prospects are considerably worse than we've had the past, partly to due graduation to the majors, trades, and regression/release. Thankfully we have some quality prospects in the top 10, but overall the depth is lacking and our farm system is being ranked below average, which seems about right. And I don't say that to be a Debbie Downer, it's just pretty apparent when comparing these guys to previous years.
  22. I think they could use another arm or two, but they've made it clear they hate paying relievers and they're also not very good at identifying them on the market, so I get why. Gotta hope Lopez rebounds and Alcala stays healthy, plus perhaps a couple young arms stepping it up (Winder/Sands/Henriquez). You also have to wonder how much longer Thielbar can keep pitching so well.
  23. They can release him, but will they? I could easily see them stay stubborn while he's struggling at the plate. Our front office has shown they will stick with the guys they've paid well past their major struggles.
  24. The Bucs should go into rebuild/retool mode with Brady done, they need to get young and find their QB of the future. This will leave open the division for Carolina or Atlanta to break out… or maybe the Saints, they did just get a 1st rounder after losing their top 10 pick this year in a silly trade last year. Winston is under contract but will be cut, he was benched below Dalton the whole year. Darnold is a FA for Carolina, they could really use an average QB. Good hire by the Texans, I dunno about Payton to Denver. He’s a great coach and Russell did play much better the final 2 games after Hackett was fired… that’s not enough for me to feel good about the Broncos.
