It's easy to get disheartened by this squad - the starting pitching is usually effective but can't go 6+ innings, the bullpen is a complete disaster, and the hitting is usually good but very erratic. I think they'll play better as we get further into the summer, but it's hard to have any confidence that this team will break the 18 game playoff losing streak, or even if they do, win a single series in the playoffs. I just don't know about this front office and coaching staff - where is the pitching pipeline that was supposed to match Cleveland's? We've got a few young and talented arms at the major league level, but it's been total feast or famine for the prospects. We've tried to scrounge around for waiver wire arms and fix up AAAA guys for the bullpen and it's not working. Falvey and Levine know how to build a lineup, that's for sure, but they won't spend on pitching and their development of it has not been anything to write home about. Yeah, I know this is an overreaction, but I'm thinking back to that article we had about a potential Falvey/Levine extension and I thinking we've got to see this team actually accomplish something this year or I'd honestly rather start fresh then sign up for several more years of this.

Emilio Pagán Doesn't Need to Be the Next Alex Colomé
Danchat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Rocco doesn't have the power to DFA Pagan and call someone up, that's on Falvey/Levine to make the move. The most he can do is reduce Pagan's usage and change the situation he comes in, like he's done with Duffey for a stretch a week or two ago. The front office is responsible for keeping Pagan around, just as they did with Colome last year. -
The Five Best Hitting Trade Targets for the Twins
Danchat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I saw folks on MLBT talking about him having a high price so I assumed he had another year of control… I wouldn’t mind if he’s just a rental.- 31 replies

On second inspection, that does look quite bad. Maybe it’s my memory or perhaps he had a very bad August/end of the year. But his numbers this year have been stellar.

The Five Best Hitting Trade Targets for the Twins
Danchat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes, the focus needs to be adding pitching, but I wouldn't mind acquiring one of these batters for the right (small) price. I dunno about giving the Cubs a haul for Contreras, catchers don't age well into their 30s.- 31 replies

He pitched really well last year in AAA too, but still never got a shot over the likes of Barraclough/Gibaut/other waiver wire fodder. Feels like a Jake Reed situation, where the numbers are good but the coaches don't think he has what it takes to get MLB hitters out. Usually they are right, but it'd be nice to give him a shot (more than one inning vs Toronto).

Minnesota’s Return for Berrios Continues to Look Better
Danchat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
There would be endless complaining here if we didn't trade Berrios and he was pitching like this for us - especially if we knew that we'd get 2 top 100 prospects for him (I think SWR was borderline, but you get my point). Let's not forget that the trade was only for control of 2021-2022 for him, so once this year is over, that's all they got for Berrios. They'll have gotten 12 good starts in 2021 from him and then a sub-replacement level 2022 from him.- 69 replies

Minor League Report (7/6): Sloppy Play
Danchat replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Methinks it's time to move Sands to the pen... it just doesn't seem like he's got what it takes to be a MLB starter. And could we get Schulfer up to the majors? There's nothing to lose, just try someone else in the pen!- 6 replies

The best options are guys recently called up from AA (Schulfer and Sisk), and Cano is still pitching really well. Other than that, maybe move Sands to the pen and see if he gets better. There's not much outside of this... Canterino to the pen could be the next Duran situation, though I think he's got an elbow problem and he's also walking about 6 guys per 9. That's true, and was the antithesis of Nick's article on Pagan yesterday... but how many more games do we have to endure him shipwrecking before we get the good version of him? I wonder if part of it is pitching sequence: A similar thing happened with Megill, he hung breaking balls that resulted in the single and then HR - I was listening on the radio and Provus suggested that going upstairs with his 98 MPH fastball was probably the better option.

Pondering a Nelson Cruz Reunion
Danchat replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would consider the move, depending on several factors - I'd like to get Sanchez out of the DH spot, but it may take an injury and a very cheap cost of the trade (no way I'd give up 2 #10-20 prospects like Tampa did). But the bullpen needs to be addressed first and probably another starter for the rotation would be wise... I am concerned that he may not play well down the stretch like he did last year... but I'd still take him over having the Jeffers/Sanchez combo at C/DH in a playoff game. Will Larnach/Miranda/Steer be competent options for that DH spot? Will Garlick still be eating lefties alive? It's hard to say. I'd probably pass, but it depends where we are in 4 weeks' time. -
Twins' Bullpen Needs Some Fresh Faces
Danchat replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think he needs to get IL'd or possibly demoted to AA. I'm not convinced moving to the pen would help, he's struggling in short appearances as well. Disagree, it could get worse. Strotman can't throw strikes and is very hittable to even AAA hitters, he'd probably have similarly terrible numbers in the majors. If he can't show an ounce of promise in AAA, I have no interest in seeing him flounder in the majors. Agreed, I want to see Schulfer and/or Sisk soon. Much more interested to see them than the two mentioned above.- 33 replies

Twins 1, Orioles 3: Walk-Off Magic Runs Out in Minnesota
Danchat replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
They're quite lucky to take 2/3 from Baltimore, but we've got to hope the offense can do something to starting pitching - going 3 games with 2 total runs off starters is not OK! Also: Smeltzer should stay in the rotation, but come playoff time it'd make more sense to him to operate as a long reliever.- 23 replies

Twins' Bullpen Needs Some Fresh Faces
Danchat replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think Sands could transition well to the bullpen, a la Jax and Littell. I don't know as much about Henriquez, but with the way he's struggling as a starter, it may be inevitable that they have to move him to the pen. As for Winder, I want him in the Twins rotation right now. He's proven up to this point that he can handle starting in the majors, and I'd rather have him starting every 5th game then relegating him to long relief. How about we remove Bundy from the rotation before he implodes like we all expect him to?- 33 replies

Guardians 5, Twins 3: We've Seen This Ending Before
Danchat replied to David Youngs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'd like to see the starters get pushed further too, but I'm not convinced it's going to work and make enough difference. Molitor did this quite often back when he was the manager, and it'd result in extra runs being given up in the 5th/6th because he got too greedy pushing the likes of Gibson or Odorizzi too far. Is pushing Archer past his limits, keeping Ryan in despite his dropping MPH, and having Smeltzer face strong RHs a 3rd time really going to pay off? I'll tell you what - the bullpen has been so horrible lately that I will take the risks involved with keeping in the starters too long. Since bullpen help is probably not coming until the deadline, I hope we'll see some adaptations. Hope being the key word.- 103 replies

3 Pitchers That Improved Under Wes Johnson
Danchat replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As compared to his entire minor league career with the Rays? You really think having our starters go 4-5 innings is Wes' strategy? Maybe it's because this team has consistently fielded starters who aren't good enough to go 6-7 innings... nah, that'd make too much sense. Wes deserves a lot of credit for maximizing output from mediocre to average pitchers, while helping up the velocity for a few pitchers that has helped them considerably. While a pitching pipeline hasn't been developed to be as robust as we hoped, I think Wes did a solid job outside of whatever happened in 2021.- 4 replies

Personally, I want to see more blamed be put at the feet of the FO when Rocco is more or less a puppet of theirs. And yes, at least a single playoff win this year is a must or I'm going to be fuming too, promise me. So while I personally don't think much of Rocco (or most managers in general), I'm just tired of seeing him getting scapegoated and seeing us fans assume our ideas on how to use the pen are superior to the coaching staff's.

One Prospect That Can Fill the Royce Lewis Void
Danchat replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
From what little I know, it doesn't sound like Steer is a MLB SS - seems like 3B/2B are where he is best used, so he's pretty redundant with Miranda on the squad. I think it'd make sense to trade one of the two, but I won't delve into which one here.- 30 replies

And then we'd probably be back here after Thornburg/Duffey/Jax (his past two appearances he has two Ls against the Guardians) and then you'd tell me the answer was that we should have used Duran. Sure, he's given too much rope to the likes of Colome, Duffey, and Pagan... but it's also been two straight years of the front office butchering the bullpen (the justification of trading Rogers away without a legitimate replacement is baffling). If there is a managerial candidate out there who has proven to be able to navigate a bad bullpen, I'd pull the trigger in a heartbeat... I just don't know if that guy exists.

I'd be willing to tack on a year, maybe two... perhaps they give him a small raise on his $12M 2023 option in exchange for smaller numbers in 2024/2025? Just don't want to get stuck paying an old starter too much down the road, a la Phil Hughes.

Around the AL Central (6/24): A Shakeup at the Top
Danchat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Plus they gave $140M to Javy Baez who's basically turned into 2021 Andrelton Simmons... yikes. Only 2 qualified hitters are hitting over .700 OPS for them and they're both at .710. Woof!- 10 replies

It's not an "off day", his knee injury has flared up (he had ice on it yesterday so I assume it was swelling up) and it's not a "planned day off" thing, he's actually unable to play. Hence why Rocco told us that the plan was for him to play both games, but he couldn't.

Defaulting to the same guy only in the 9th inning is overrated, having a good bullpen is not. But it's true that many here thought that Rogers was overrated, if that's what you meant. I just don't know if there are many, if any managers out there who could navigate this awful bullpen to perfection like for those who think it's possible. Sure, I would have pulled Pagan quicker, but when your options are Jax (after losing the previous day's game), and Duffey and Thornburg (two guys who should be pitching in AAA right now), I can understand Rocco's call. I'd just like to see more criticism directed at the front office rather than Rocco... it's not his fault Pagan and Smith were our biggest bullpen additions.

Yup, just as I thought, Buxton seems to have had a [minor] setback and it was not the plan to have him on the bench today. Maybe it's time to IL him and see if his knee heals up... of course, he'll inexplicably hit 3 HRs the next few days because I suggested that.
