A Solid Start for Trevor Larnach
umterp23 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Is this really a solid start? He is below avg hitter, not great power (but I have always said not everyone on the team needs to bomb 20+ HR's), decent speed and decent arm for OF. His K rate is Gallo 'esque. Between Buxton and Larnach and their K-rate, Gallo looks really good at moment (granted injury helps). -
JOEY GALLO PURSUIT OF TEAM STRIKEOUT RECORD TRACKER
umterp23 commented on dxpavelka's blog entry in JOEY GALLO TEAM STRIKEOUT RECORD TRACKER
Buxton doing his best Gallo/Sano impersonation at the moment. He might outpace them all, except he will only play in about 80 games, so record is safe with him. Larnach on other hand, he might make Gallo look really good -
We talk about off days and then scheduled off days for a guy who isn't on the field for more than 60% of any season give or take some % points. So at this pace he will play or should I say potentially just bat for about 90 games for $15MM. It is what it is for him and he isn't an Elite Ballplayer when you don't play for what you signed him for which was CF. The fact that we settled on a backup to be the starter in Taylor and not knocking Taylor, but that isn't what the fans wanted in getting Buxton long term.

Buxton getting rest days as a DH is very laughable and such as crappy strategy. When he swings and misses resulting in K's he is already rested as we walked up to the plate, the pitch clock at bat takes maybe a minute and walks back to the dugout. Sounds like he gets plenty of rest already with 11 K's to his name. Everyone was complaining about Gallo the K machine but Buxton is outpacing him already. His true value is playing in the field, not the trickle down effect of Taylor having to play 95% of time defensively. Taylor is a good one day a week option for Buxton CF day off. Sure a lot of money spent for 1/3rd of the value for Buxton only DH'ing games.

correa and buxton with days off, is quite laughable. I guess 24 hours between games isn't long enough rest period. A lot of money to be sitting on the pine wearing a sweatshirt

That's what I get thinking of Harper and Nationals and not Harper and Phillies. So yes, you are correct, I'm off base. Now if I look at Phillies: above avg for both run scores and runs given up but not leaders in either category. If you add in Runs allowed per game, Astros were 2nd with 3.20, Phillies were 15th with 4.23 and our Twins (14th) were better at 4.22. Still stand by the managerial moves and timely hitting though. Some teams who made playoffs weren't bombers but had solid pitching and defense. Astros had it all on paper, so not surprised they won it all

The math on paper doesn't tell the complete story. Nationals faced the Astros for the title. Tell the Nationals they can't compete by the math. Nationals scored as team: 603 runs, 5th worst in all of baseball. Their pitching staff gave up 855 runs, which was next to last. They were never out of a ballgame due to timely hitting. Sustainable year over year, no but Twins were above avg in each category last year. Boils down to managerial decisions before and during the game and having healthy guys play where they are supposed to play on the field. Twins can win regardless of the math

The Buxton DH experiment and no outfield to maybe May or June is a real joke. DH where he is running out ground balls, hustling on extra base hits and sliding into bags that look awful compared to running in the field for defense. He should have been in the field today with tomorrow off (gift of an off day) and then DH Friday in colder weather. Castro while a nice story is only that. No reason for him to be on team except they have moves they can make with him with no penalty. Garlick isn't really the answer either. Buxton not playing in the field trickle down effect in full bloom and they say April Showers bring May flowers.

A New Outfielder Could be Twins Saving Grace
umterp23 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Since Buxton's value is diminished by not playing in the field, Taylor is a wonderful get for the Twins. I'm a believer that not every single batter needs explosive power as some want or question, he (pick any player) can't hit the long ball. We don't need 13 hitters that have to hit double digit dingers. Pitching, Defense and situational hitting wins games more times than not- 14 replies

Buxton is only elite in the field based on paper at this time. We locked him in on a favorable contract to DH and play what 50 games in the OF if he gets the whole spring off to make sure he is warmed up enough to play in the field. Makes me laugh. He isn't elite if he isn't playing in the field. He is a below avg DH at this time. Stats tell us so based on his career. He has played over 100 games in a season, once in his career. Let's read that again, once in his career. He has avg 73 games per year or 45% of game action. Granted, 1st year is into year to his career and the Covid year, but the numbers don't put him in elite status. Buxton and only Buxton can change this narrative of perception of elite vs reality of elite

Ryan Jeffers is Facing an Uphill Battle
umterp23 replied to Ted Wiedmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So overblown analytics continue to be invented to measure who sucks and who is good based on any given stat. So Jeffers doesn't have the strongest arm, bases are enlarged, pitch clock, can't step off the rubber and throw to 1st more than twice, blah, blah, blah. Where is the stat about how fast the pitcher gets the ball to home plate to give any catcher, regardless who it is a chance to throw a guy out? Last time I checked an SB only gets dinged vs the catcher and not the pitcher. Maybe it exists, but always the catchers fault. Let's remember who and where Jeffers came from. Self taught catcher in high school and college with no dedicated catching coach till the minors. The leg positioning and setup behind the plate will limit every catcher in how the twins have coached the position. Until the twins make some changes in setup, he will be behind the statistical 8-ball. -
Twins 2023 Position Analysis: Third Base
umterp23 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Right now, nothing to judge him on really since he can't throw the ball. Hopefully he is taking reps on fielding the ball with no throws to get further settled at the fielding piece. Negative for me is sore arm for S/T. We don't know what we will get until he truly is on the field. Same for Buxton and Polanco. Walking wounded and slow ramp up is not a spot to be in for anyone- 22 replies

Twins 2023 Position Analysis: Catcher
umterp23 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Article makes Jeffers look like he is always on the IL but one stint because of a freak wild pitch in the dirt during a warmup session breaks his thumb. He played through such break for almost 2 weeks and was hot with the bat at the time plus trying to throw a ball. So one stint and people think he is buxton part 2. Jeffers is playing pretty well in S/T and has out-performed Vasquez the anointed the savior the position. Now the arguments from readers will be that it is only S/T performance and Jeffers still is awful. Well, if it is only S/T then Vasquez who was "sick" to start game play and has masterfully hit .077 thus far. Twins have depth with these two guys and Farmer as emergency, so we are good for now. Let's not forget that Jeffers self taught himself to be a catcher and didn't have a dedicated coach till getting drafted. The twins don't seem to be to worried about throwing guys out, when you put the guy in such an awkward catching position that is flexible with blocking balls or throwing runners out. He did throw someone out yesterday so maybe seeing his confidence will grow seeing him get a guy. 25 years old, calls a good game, solid receiver and guys like to pitch to him. Mgmt will play the guys equally and not tax either one. If Jeffers we aren't stuck when he plays unlike what most readers think.- 39 replies

Kyle Farmer Can Be a Crucial Fit for the Twins
umterp23 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Will always root for the guy who loves the game 24/7. Farmer seems to be that type of guy. Position flexibility, will do what is asked when asked, prepares for any situation and is healthy. Is he the front line star? No, but he doesn't have to be and he knows that. Pencil his name in the lineup and I won't be disappointed. -
Twins Add Infield Depth, Sign Veteran Donovan Solano
umterp23 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is a solid move for multiple reasons: Austin, Lee, Julien and Lewis won't be on opening day roster for various reasons: still coming back from injury, haven't played above AA, everyday at bats at AAA are needed vs once a week at bats in bigs. Solano isn't blocking the youth as some seem to speculate. Larnach and Kiriloff most likely will be at AAA to start the season, as I don't believe Kiriloff will be able to ramp up without a setback (hate to think it but not sold on his wrist, especially if he has stated he is still working on getting comfortable). Celestino isn't in the mix for 4th or even 5th OF. If Kiriloff isn't ready, Miranda will be back at 1st and Farmer/Solano will rotate at 3b. Paddack to 60 day IL shortly as he may not be back till late summer at best. -

Ranking the Most Improved AL Central Teams for 2023
umterp23 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
On paper means nothing, on field results dictates everything. Injuries will happen, how do the Twins respond? Buxton's value is playing CF and not every other day DH role. If he plays 80 games or less in the field, than we have problems. We have plenty of guys to get DH at bats, so Buxton needs to be "the Man" in the OF they way everybody believe he is today. Solid up the middle if Buxton, Correa and Polanco give us 120+ games in the field together. We have a solid 2-man Catching tandem so I'm good there. Farmer, Gordon, Gallo/Kepler off the bench depending on the days is a decent group. Gordon has a chance to be a cornerstone guy for next couple years if he can replicate last year. Team doesn't have to all hit for power to win games, unlike many who believe each guy needs to belt 20+ HR's. Timely HR's are more effective. Base hits, hit and run, Sb's, move the guys over, apply pressure on opposing teams defense wins games more often that a ooh-ahh 440' upper deck solo HR. But, hey I'm an old school guy Pitching, still a little luke warm on BP and how many arms we will need to go innings 6-9 on a daily basis. Rotation looks to be stable. Let the games begin- 27 replies

Pagan and low leverage situations was the mantra last year after he blew lead after lead vs Cleveland. Pagan in mop up duty in potential blowouts is the maximum exposure we should be seeing him in. Sure hope he proves me wrong, just don't see it happening.

Realistic Goals for Twins Hitters in 2023
umterp23 commented on Harrison Smith's blog entry in Harrison Smith’s Blog
Buxton's value is not playing 80 games in CF, it's playing 100-120 games in CF and an occasional DH role. We keep hearing how great a defender he is and he has shown that skill set but he isn't top 10 in the league guy playing 33% of his games at DH. -
The Twins Forgotten Center Fielder
umterp23 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Saying Celestino is an Elite CF, makes me laugh as a joint reference with Taylor. Night and day difference from a fielding perspective. If he has value, you move him to get something back. With the potential that other almost here prospects may switch to OF and potentially CF, then Celestino at best is 5th OF on the roster. Needs more aging at AAA and not sure he should even be called up during the year. Young sure, but Elite not so fast. -
The Twins Need to be Realistic With Max Kepler
umterp23 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree on win now mode but living in Pittsburgh, the Pirates are never in win now mode, they like to gather young assets and preach to the masses that they are building for the future. What they build in grooming assets to then trade them away for younger assets, thus the never ending 5 year plan to competitiveness. That's why it is always Steelers Country, then Penguins, the Pirates on Firework Night and when they host really good teams- 69 replies

The Twins Need to be Realistic With Max Kepler
umterp23 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would still move him and send him to Pirates who start their 5-year plan over each year. Kepler is at best a 4th OF on the team vs Lefties and maybe a 3rd OF vs Righties and that's a strong maybe in my opinion.- 69 replies
