Can the Twins Unlock RHP A.J. Alexy?
umterp23 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not on 40-man, minor league deal = no harm / no foul if it doesn't work out. Good luck to the guy and maybe we catch some lightning in a bottle moment. -
If you are looking to see some our Twins best prospects battle the Rays prospects, MLB has announced all teams will play a showcase case in middle of March. Twins will have their prospects game as part of a doubleheader. See article and schedule via MLB link https://www.mlb.com/news/spring-breakout-prospect-showcase-to-debut-in-2024?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage&partnerId=zh-20231214-1117872-mlb-1-A&qid=1026&utm_id=zh-20231214-1117872-mlb-1-A&bt_ee=%2FDuxvR%2Bk5hNn3lOlzuDmp2cIOHjDTkUN%2BBGM6ijF544L6EyVriBwELOVnRks1mtU&bt_ts=1702561732503

The Twins Should Not Trade Max Kepler
umterp23 replied to Hunter McCall's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't mind keeping Kepler until he proves he shouldn't be around. Problem could be he has a so-so avg year and then the whole QO conversation starts. QO$ might be double what he is making now and do the twins stomach giving him that offer as he might accept it and then we trade him for minor leaguers this time next year? Now on the other hand. Why not push Larnach in a trade as he hasn't shown he can produce consistently game in game out? Granted value isn't there for trade, but let's say we package him for some pitching, would we do it? Or move Kiriloff if he is a 1B only kind of guy. If we don't move polanco, then Julien can play 1st. Keep Farmer and ask him to be our righty 1B as needed. Farmer is your infield utility and Castro can roam LF/CF as needed. Gordon has no value as a week hitting OF.- 139 replies

The Twins and Brewers Are Perfect Trade Partners
umterp23 replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Can't figure out the love affair or given roster spot for Gordon as he is one of the last roster spots on this team and with no options is clogging up the roster. He isn't a very good base-runner, has a very week arm to play CF, hasn't done much at the plate and bats L which doesn't help us. Castro trumps Gordon hands down. Farmer as insurance to play some SS to give Correa days off is worth him on the roster. Moving Polanco should be for pitching only if we even move him should be the target return.- 30 replies

Overpaying $30MM to Vazquez in guaranteed money is a very tough pill to swallow for a guy in his early 30's at the catcher position. Some state superior defense for Vazquez is exaggerated in my opinion as stats below are across all MLB catchers. DWAR - Jeffers .9 (11th overall), Vazquez .4 (27th overall) Caught Stealing - Jeffers .245 (25th) Vazquez .239 (26th) Stolen bases allowed - Jeffers 40 and Vazquez 54 Passed Balls - Jeffers 6 and Vazquez 3 Errors - Jeffers 3 and Vazquez 9 Fielding % - Jeffers .996 and Vazquez .990 Assists - Jeffers 31 and Vazquez 29 Quality tandem would say yes but $10MM for Vazquez is an overpay.

What Can the Twins Get For Nick Gordon?
umterp23 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Left handed batter and doesn't have a strong arm to play OF, doesn't draw walks consistently and isn't a great baserunner. Don't see a fit- 62 replies

Setting the Stage for the 2023-24 Twins Offseason
umterp23 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
But how many folks complain that we have way to many LH hitters playing in the outfield. Gordon isn't needed regardless of $1MM vs league minimum of Wallner, Larnach and potential a Martin next year. Gordon really was a one year wonder and was to a horrific '23 season. Not sure he is a fit anymore- 54 replies

umterp23 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
not sure what the love affair is with Gordon, but do we really need $1MM 5th/6th type of outfielder when you have the following if they are retained: Buxton (may never see OF again), Wallner, Castro, Larnach, Kepler. Gordon is a lefty swinger which we have many already and has a pretty weak outfield arm. Martin, Lewis can man CF when Lee is ready or we keep Taylor. DFA Gordon and see what club takes a swing on a guy who really hasn't played since he broke his leg- 54 replies

4 Things That Went Wrong for the Twins in the Playoffs
umterp23 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Somewhat surprised that Jeffers did play every inning of every game in playoffs. Rotational aspect of catching position was utilized this year and Jeffers was really good compared to years past. Hard to ignore the .276, 14 HR, 43 rbi and so Rocco rolled the dice so to speak. He did have some really hard hit balls for outs which would of, could of change the narrative. I like the future with Jeffers. Before the season if we had said .250+ avg, 10+ HR's and 30+ rbi's, the answer to the question would have been Vazquez by almost anyone you asked. Next year will be interesting, but $10MM per year overpay for Vazquez does hurt the wallet. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out. -
What is not to like except the playoff outcome, I get that part. Julien, Wallner, Lewis getting an opportunity, capitalizing on such moments and securing a place for the immediate future. Those 3 will always look to improve, adjust and battle to be better and the team better. Excited to see their next step. Jeffers behind the dish and at the plate was a really nice improvement. He made a batting stance change and metrics across the board moved north not south. Always room for improvement but I think we have a solid guy in the position. Vazquez and his contract suffocates the payroll a bit but he is here to stay unless they find a trade partner. Buxton is the wild card. Will he ever be healthy? Don't think so, hope I'm wrong. Castro, Taylor, Farmer, Solano filled their roles and enjoyed their mature approach to being a contributor when needed. Not sure we have room for all of them next year though. Pitching what can you say. Thought it was going to be a real struggle but the guys found their way. Depth is there, could always use more but Lopez is legit along with others. Next year 4 months till guys report for Spring Training. Looking forward to it already

Twins Youth Burning Them at the Worst Time
umterp23 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Are the Astros truly a much better than the Twins? Astros are probably more balanced than the Twins but I wouldn't go truly a much better team. We did win 4 out of 6 in regular season, and now 1-2 in post season. Playoff experience sure, they have it, Twins don't but we aren't dead in the water yet. 9-1 blowout loss makes it look bad on paper but other games have been quite even. Take the week division off narrative off the table. Astros/Rangers both won 90 games. Twins won season series over both of them. AL East considered the strongest of all divisions got blanked in the playoffs 0-7. Throw records and standings out the window come playoffs and you get hot, you advance. Twins need to get hot or at least very warm tonight to move to a game 5. We will learn a bit more of what we have tonight on the mental makeup of this team. Score early and pressure eases a bit to add on during the game.- 57 replies

Time for Ryan to shine. Astros will look for his fastball and only fastball and force his hand on a secondary pitch. All hands on deck from pitching staff and I don't care if we send 9 guys out there to cover all 9 innings. Twins need to jump on Urguidy and throw crooked number after crooked number as they won't go all hands on deck to cover a bad start. They will have Verlander for game 5. Would love a win today and then break their hearts Friday in Houston. Yes, tall task but it can be done with this group of guys.

110.7 off the bat and shortstop dove to make play. He has had the 2 of the hardest hit balls today and got plunked. Yeah its his fault. Easy Hot Take -

Let's remember Twins 3-1 in post season and the one loss Jeffers went 2-4 so it's not a batting weak link black hole for Jeffers. Guys really like throwing to him as Pablo gave him high praise of credit the other night. He has really blossomed into the catcher we wanted. As for looking lost the plate, not sure he is lost as he has missed the one pitch he has been driving in each at bat. He takes some pitches for sure but with 2 strikes he does choke up on bat and works to put it in play. He has been solid all year, so not surprised he is lineup again and I like it. Nothing wrong with riding what has gotten you to a 3-1 post season run thus far. -
I'm fine with that as well. I like Jeffers in 7-8 hole the best. Little less pressure of the # in the lineup mentality. Bottom Line, lets bury the Astros and move on. Just Win Twins, Just Win
-
Sure do. Batting is a bonus with Catchers as they say and with Jeffers he has done a lot of things well all season. Hot hand doesn't mean just hitting. With Jeffers, Twins are 59-40 with him in lineup and 3 and 1 in the playoffs. Did you hear Pablo's interview? Gave credit for Jeffers calling the game. Calling it and pitcher execution still has to happen but no one gave Jeffers much credit for the non-batting side of the position. I like Jeffers more the 8 spot than closer to middle.
