I'd like to add to this that there is a decent chance that one or more from the list of Kirilloff, Wallner (yes Wallner..im not fully sold yet), Miranda, Vazquez, and Larnach makes significant sustained improvement. And those that don't can be quickly dumped back to AAA (in most cases) without giving them 100s of ABs that they'd give to a worthless player that they paid millions to acquire. With a healthy Correa and (supposedly) Buxton, along with Royce Lewis, and a Gallo sized hole filled with at minimum, mediocrity, they are already a much better team than they were at the start of the 2023 season.

As the season has not yet started and anything is possible, I am looking forward to a much improved lineup with Buxton and Correa fully recovered and a continuation of Julien's OBP and Royce Lewis vying for an MVP. Pablo will be solid, Paddack will impress, and Ryan might grow up a bit and get his jitters out. Maybe if Ober wins 15 and keeps his season ERA below 3.33 people will finally stop underestimating him. I expect nothing out of Varland or DeScalfini as starters, but with better offense I'm hoping it won't matter. Be patient is the correct move. This team is better than they were last year if the old guard gets healthy and Royce/Julien maintain their dominance. There is a lot of room for continued improvement with they young players they already have.

The Sonny Gray experience has shown that great pitching won't win if the team is on the wrong side of a 1-0 game. They need more bats.

I hope Gordon has a breakout year. He was never going to get a good opportunity on the Twins.

Ryan still has a lot of growing up to do (i.e. potential) and Ober somehow still has something to prove. If both of those improve this year and can continue to increase their IP, then all we have to worry about is Varland laying an egg. IF the bullpen is as good as advertised they'll be fine with a potentially sub-par DeSclafani who has the potential to actually not suck. I'm more worried about their hitting than the pitching.

Bubba Thompson. We hardly knew thee

If they are keeping Kepler and Soler never has to play right field, then yes. Do it.

It is sad to see, but I agree with this trade. This team really does need a crappy pitcher and a bunch of good luck charms more than it needs Polanco. I just wish it had been Kepler.

I wonder the degree to which his success is due to pitching in the AL central. If I remember right, he struggled against good teams and when pitching against hot shot pitchers. Either way, if he and Ober improve, the twins pitching will be in a good place.

Going on memory, and not taking the time to look up all of the different performances, I'd say that Ryan has some growing up to do. He seems to be subject to pressure. If he is facing a well known or ace pitcher, he gets shaky and doesn't do well... which is fine when you usually play the Tigers, Royals, Guardians, White Sox, etc... but doesn't bode well for upper tier teams. Maybe all the attention around Ryan screwing up the second half majorly by playing hurt and losing big will help him get smart. My concern with Ober last year was that while he had great numbers, he wasn't really proven. Most of his MLB games came against AAAA teams. In 2023, he was great. If he continues to stay healthy (or rather uninjured... hate the term 'healthy') I'd be more than happy to have him as a 2,3,4, or 5 starter. Either way, despite losing what'shisname, I think their pitching looks spectacular going into 2024. But then again, I still have PTSD from watching Colon, Hughes, Slowey, Nolasco, Milone, et al. I've seen some of the worst pitching in my life come from this team.

I'd be happy with him getting it back together enough to be in the Hall of Really Good Regionally Almost Famous players.

I was searching for the Andrews Sisters' 'Going Back to Minnie' but I couldn't find it.

Regression works both ways. I'd expect (or at least hope) to see better years from Correa, Vazquez, and Gordon.
  15. Muppet
(Even if we gave up that WAR to get him in the first place)
  16. Muppet
End the end, it was worth a loss of 100 WAR just to no longer have Delmon Young on the team.

It's a stretch to say Buxton and Correa will be a major 1-2- punch at the top of the league. But obviously that would be awesome and not entirely impossible. If Correa's foot is better and Buxton finally has a full season absolutely any thing could be possible with that pair. I'd add that maaaaaaybee AK could be the next MVP caliber hitter on the team. But that would require rolling a 20 sided die and getting your number. Id be happy to see Lewis and Julien move a step forward, or even stay as hot as they were, but until I see it, I'm not going to believe it. As for the Mirandas and Larnachs, of the world... maybe even Wallner, their window of opportunity is quickly slamming shut. Maybe not Wallner yet.
  18. Muppet
Right now is the only time they will be able to get anything remotely resembling value for Kepler. If they need an emergency RF in the event that Larnach hits under .200, they can go ahead and resign Jake Cave. It's not that big of a drop off, especially if Buxton is able to manage CF this year and RF only needs to cover a sliver of the OF.
  19. Muppet
I'd prefer to see Kepler go, but Polanco is probably a better trade chip. He's a good not-great player who will eventually be inducted into the Hall of Regionally Almost Famous. Like you say, there's an infield log jam. It was nice knowin ya.

No more rhyming now, I mean it. But we must always remember to hold our breath when looking at our rookie phenoms lest they come down with Matt Nokes' syndrome. This will be the year to tell. If he, and the others, stay hot and/or improve. 2024 will be a good year, regardless of who the new hot pitcher will be.

One thing I hope the Twins DO do this offseason... Let's get Akil Baddoo back and watch him turn into an all star... just to mess with the Tigers a bit.

My favorite part about the off season is being overly and unrealistically optimistic. Sure Buxton is healed! He will be the gg, mvp, ss all star CF we know him to be. Ryan and Ober are going to take huge steps forward, so much that we won't even remember that guy who is now in... where is it? St. Louis? Miranda and Larnach are not only going to be not bad, but they'll actually be good (both have been a tad overrated IMO... but not anymore). There will be no sophomore slump for Lewis and Julien. Pagan and Gallo are finally gone thank the baseball gods (yes, I know... Pagan ended up figuring it out... but whatever)! And finally,... Nick Gordon will have the kind of year that will have most of us denying we ever hoped for his offloading to a low level type of team that may or not be playing in Las Vegas soon. The best part of the off season is that ALL of these things could very well come true. If they did, this team would be unstoppable. And, I'd even say that until opening day, I'll even expect all of this to come true.
  23. Muppet
Whatever. It seemed to work for him pretty well. Since joining the Twins he went from a decent/pretty good pitcher to one of the best pitchers in MLB. He'd actually be my number 1 rebound candidate. Anyway, all the best to Gray and all that.
  24. Muppet
Outside of 2019 he has only been good for 2 months. Lucky those were the last two months of 2023.

I'd also add that MAT's power this year seemed to be a bit of an aberration. On any given year, I'd expect Kiermaier's power numbers to be roughly equivalent, or slightly better than MAT's. So replacing Kiermaier with MAT would at worst be even, with a little possible upside.
