  1. Good reminder! I think a lot of us HAD forgotten about Dickey. Then again, his Twins tenure was a short one, and it was only AFTER he left the Twins that he got a chance to settle in and become a fairly successful starting pitcher. On the list of great knuckleball pitchers, don't forget Hoyt Wilhelm, who started his career late but seemingly pitched forever (shades of Bartolo Colon) and ended up in the Hall of Fame.
  2. Great article and interview, Seth! I also like the photos of him gripping the ball for different pitches. That gives me a new perspective on how he, and other pitchers, can change grips for different pitches. Really interesting stuff!
  3. I wouldn't mind having Taylor come back again, but he's going to be a more expensive signing this coming year, and most likely looking for a multi-year contract, neither of which may suit the Twins. It's looking more like a combination of Martin and Gordon, with the hopeful return of Buxton in center field this year. Signing a free agent like Kiermaier would be cool, but once again, I'm not sure our budget will allow for that.
  4. I don't know much about any of the players mentioned, but I think ideas like this will be necessary to consider this off-season. With the current budget restraints, any idea that the Twins are going to compete for the top-flight free agents, or even the second tier, is just wishful thinking if not pure fantasy. It's time for bargain pickups or dumpster diving yet again. Hopefully, we can swing an interesting trade that doesn't ruin our prospect pipeline, but I think we will need to look more along the fringes this time around.
  5. First of all, a very interesting article, approaching the "value" of those two players from a different angle. I'm not really sure that the return for either one of those players will be "significant", but as this article suggests, both players may end up being more in demand than some of us would have thought. Good stuff.
  6. I'm still curious about this approach that the Twins are using with Raya, limiting the number of pitches and innings that he throws each time. Obviously he is still considered a starting pitcher, but he isn't being allowed to go deep into games. Will that change this year? Is the innings limit due to a fear of injuring his arm, or the fact that he is a smaller pitcher? What do others think about keeping him on a pitch limit this coming season?
  7. It would sure be wonderful if one, or both, or those pitchers are capable of pitching a bunch of healthy innings this year.
  8. Yes, a good bench and a versatile one too. I like the fact that all three of those guys can play multiple positions, plus the speed of Castro and Gordon. I'd love to have them all on the roster in April and see what we can get for Polanco in a trade.
  9. Farmer is a real gamer and a handy player to have in case of the all too frequent injuries that happen. I'd rather trade Polanco, who has much more trade value, and may not age well with his own injury history. As far as the overall roster, yes, it's one of the best we've had in recent memory. I just wish they would find a way to cut down on those strikeouts, at least from among our hitters. For our own pitchers, the increase in striking out batters is more than welcome!
  10. Very true. I can't imagine that he much trade value, considering his age and salary.
  11. That is funny, I didn't realize that Washington hadn't played on the team at the same time as either of those guys. Maybe he can bring back Mickey Hatcher, who actually was the Angels hitting coach a few years back.
  12. I read that ex-Twin Ron Washington, who just got hired to manage the Angels. may include two other ex-Twins on his coaching staff: Chili Davis and Torii Hunter. https://www.si.com/mlb/angels/news/star-studded-coaching-staff-coming-together-for-angels-and-new-manager-ron-washington-tm1995
  13. I may be one of the few that liked that trade at the time. Kiner-Falefa had played well with the Rangers and I thought he'd be a good fit for the Twins. Well, we never got to find out. Despite his injuries, Garver has hit well, although his frequent stints on the IL are still a concern. In any case, after we flipped Kiner-Falefa and Rorvedt to the Yankees for Urshela and Sanchez I wondered what the Twins were doing. Gary Sanchez? But of course the Correa option soon presented itself, so like others have said, it ended up working out well for the Twins. But I have to say, Garver has continued to hit better than I thought he would. My guess it that he will do well in free agency this year.
  14. Several of the players mentioned seem like realistic targets, but I doubt we'd get someone like Castillo. In any case, I think making a trade, versus signing a free agent, will be our best option this time around.
  15. I loved Ron Washington as a player, and also as a coach and manager. Plus he played in the short-lived "Senior League" back in late 80s, or was it early 90s? Whenever it was, he was the league MVP that year, then went back to MLB and played another year, I think with the Astros (saw him giving infield trips in spring training to a young catcher who was converting to the infield by the name of Craig Biggio!). Anyway, Wash was a handy , versatile player, but not the type that you would put on the cover of some mag or advert.
  16. That was my first guess.
  17. I agree, Paddack seems like the forgotten arm in this scenario, but I think a healthy and fired-up Paddack might indeed be a better option for the Twins in 2024, as opposed to re-signing Sonny Gray to a multi-year contract that goes sour quickly.
  18. Very interesting article. Thanks for all the info on those players, none of whom I've ever heard of. But obviously some of these guys MIGHT be able to make the jump and help us. That said are any of them realistic options?
  19. Yeah, those two were pretty bad. Compared to them, I think Bundy and Archer were pretty good, or at least they put in their innings and weren't shelled too often. Not great, but not awful. They did what was expected. But we all hope the Twins can do MUCH better. Hopefully, trading for the likes of Lopez and Gray have shown us a better path to winning.
  20. I gotta say, with the ever-changing landscape of baseball, factoring in the increasingly high salaries/deals that are offered to free agents. any attempt to put numbers on these players is a futile exercise. Just go out and find some above average arms. Money will find a way, even with the Twins.
  21. Wacha just doesn't move the needle for me. A decent pitcher, but one that hasn't thrown that many innings in recent years. and certainly not the sort of starting pitcher you want in a playoff rotation. We can do better, much better.
  22. I agree. Too many other hitters in the system like Sabato. He doesn't do anything special, other than hit for power, that would make him worthy of a roster spot at this point. Leave him unprotected.
  23. I like the idea of signing Kiermaier. Renfroe still scares me. He looks solid one year and then horrible the year afterwards. I'd rather go with a Taylor or Kiermaier, or even give Austin Martin or Nick Gordon another shot.
  24. I had forgotten about Ynoa. He had about a great half-year with the Braves and then got injured.
  25. Ugh. another YouTube video. No thanks.
