  1. Good point. It's early in the offseason, and it's possible we could land a veteran arm in a trade, but I think your scenario will most likely come true.
  2. Very well researched and interesting article. Some players with some possible upside, but of course the rule that they need to stay on our roster all year makes it tricky. For his name alone, I love the idea of getting Anthony Hoopii-Tuionetoa. But as others have noted, the Twins will be so far down the picking order that it's unlikely anything interesting will be available to us, even if we so desired.
  3. Yeah, I also expect Anderson to bounce back this coming season, but the Twins just don't have any need for him with the glut of infielders that we already have, not to mention his potential to be a disruption.
  4. I really liked Matz when he was with the Mets, and thought he would end up being a star player, but as you noted with his up and down seasons, that hasn't happened. Still, if it didn't cost us much, I wouldn't mind the Twins getting him.
  5. I can also see Kepler staying as a reliable starter or as you say, a depth piece. And even though he had a very good second half of last season, I still don't see him as a player that will have that much trade value. Yeah, I get the WAR numbers and contract comparisons, but at his age, and with his streaky seasonal stats, I just can't see many other teams chomping at the bit to acquire him.
  6. Polanco is definitely the more reliable hitter, but his past injury history is still a concern for me, which is one reason I would rather trade him.
  7. Utley is certainly qualified, but he never won the number of batting titles that Mauer did, nor play a position as difficult at catcher. I agree that Beltre will get in on the first ballot. Remember those days when many of us Twins fans were urging the Twins to sign him when he was a free agent? Early in his career he was more of a glove-first player, but then he found his hitting stroke ... and then some!
  8. I like the fact that we get the compensatory pick, and that's no small thing. A very nice silver lining after losing a very good pitcher.
  9. Wallner would have been one of my choices as trade bait, but I didn't realize he was that good defensively. If that's the case, I take back my "trade him now" mindset, and keep him on the team. Maybe I was just blinded by all the strikeouts, but if he really can help defensively in the outfield, I'd keep him and hope his batting eye improves.
  10. I expect Giolito will bounce back too. I wouldn't mind the Twins signing him to bolster the rotation.
  11. I think the "trade Lee" chatter has more to do with .... which position does he play for the Twins? Lee is obviously ready for his MLB debut this coming season, but we have Lewis at third, Correa, at shortstop, Kiriloff at First Base, and at this juncture Polanco is at Second. So, Lee is sort of the odd man out and due his super prospect status he has a LOT of trade value, so I think the Twins would be foolish not to consider some good offers.
  12. Interesting post. I have fond memories of Neshek pitching for the Twins, but I honestly can't remember Flores at all!
  13. Mauer certainly deserves to be elected on the first ballot, but I'll be shocked if that happens. Due to the usual Hall of Fame "tradition" and politics, plus what I think is a bias against small market clubs like the Twins, he'll end up waiting a year or two. But man, I hope I'm wrong and he makes it to Cooperstown the first time around. Players like David and Wright and Chase Utley going in ahead of Mauer? That would be criminal!
  14. You could be right. I'd wager that Lynn is the first one either released or traded. He's a streaky pitcher. Looked awful for the White Sox last year, but rebounded a bit after the trade. Still, I think his effective years are behind him. Not really sure what to think about them getting Gibson. Just an innings eater at this point? Although, just from looking at box scores, he signed to strike out more batters this past season with Baltimore.
  15. However they end up adding another starter I hope they do it very, very soon. I hate the waiting until February strategy, the front office either hoping that prices will fall or we will pick up some sort of bargain. Get a good arm ASAP before they are signed or dealt to other teams.
  16. I'd be curious too. The contract given doesn't seem like any sort of crazy over-pay. Maeda was a very effective pitcher (when healthy) and he seemed to have a good team-first mindset (happy to go to a bullpen role in the playoffs). His age didn't bother me at all. I think he has more than a few years left in the tank. Good luck to him with the Tigers, but I will miss having him with the Twins.
  17. One would hope that a bigger signing is coming, but with budgetary restraints, I'm not optimistic.
  18. Good for him. He might end up making the MLB team to start the season.
  19. As several others have said, I can't see why a pitching-starved team like the Angels would trade one of their best pitchers, especially going into a season where they just hired a new manager (the ever-so-cool Ron Washington!) and are looking to compete, even without (most likely) Otani on the team. Nice idea, but I just don't see Sandoval being traded.
  20. I was hoping that the Twins would be able to re-sign Maeda, but looks like the Tigers got him. Not the end of the world, but I liked Maeda and thought he would be a stable force in the rotation next year. Now it looks like we will lose both him and Gray. Paddack can slide into one of those spots, but I think we would need another quality/veteran arm in the rotation, as opposed to rolling the dice on Varland, Winder, or Woods-Richardson being able to hold a spot effectively. I seriously doubt that the Twins will be in play for any free agents, so making a trade is really our only path forward.
  21. Yes, Paddack might be more durable than many are thinking. As you noted, it will be closer to 2 years since his TJ surgery. He might be one of those sleepers that outperforms all the expectations this year. And yes to Lopez being the better option as staff ace over Sonny Gray.
  22. I agree, His trade value is very low at this point, and the relatively high salary makes it even that much more difficult to unload him. As others have stated, he's still good defensively and handy to have as a backup, especially if that injury bug hits us again.
  23. Neither player excites me. I'd rather bring back a slimmer and motivated Miguel Sano ... if such a thing even exists1
  24. He's certainly about the most expendable player we could trade, but as far as appealing to other teams, I would assume that most trade partners might prefer one or two of our younger prospects. Polanco has value, but if I'm the other team, I'd be a bit worried about his injury history.
  25. I'd like to see Maeda come back too, and I think that's a realistic possibility, much more so than our getting Sonny Gray again.
