Another interesting article, much appreciate as always. But I have a suggestion, or rather a request: Is it possible to include captions beneath the photos, telling us who exactly is pictured? I honestly have no idea who some of these players are!

Article: Importance Of The 2017 Draft
Doctor Wu replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Count me as one that was also surprised and disappointed that they selected Lewis with the first pick. But ... after reading more about him, and factoring in the uncertainty of the pitching prospects in the top five, I think it was a good pick. Plus, the other picks the Twins made in the early rounds look like good ones too. Astute, canny, smart, or whatever you want to call it, I think it was an impressive draft. We all know the results are still years away, but I'm optimistic.- 20 replies

Article: 2017: The Year In Debuts
Doctor Wu replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It was certainly an odd mix of first-timers on the roster this season. Not all of our favorite prospects were called to the show, but that's no tragedy either. Of course, many of those decisions were based on injuries, the need for a 26th-man, and other factors, so it's all understandable to a certain degree. Looking over the list, didn't Melville also make his major league debut this year? .- 21 replies

An interesting, creative idea! Duda has never been one of those "wow" players that you get excited about, but as your stats you posted show, he's capable of putting up some very respectable numbers. He's certainly much young than Napoli, and less injury prone too. But as someone else noted, he doesn't seem to be the right fit for what the Twins need next season. Plus, they just signed Brock Stassi to a minor league contract, and he's a guy who is very good with the glove at first base if the Twins are looking for a backup at some point.

Article: Building A Super Bullpen
Doctor Wu replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So very true! I vividly recall all the clamoring for Sipp and Bastardo that year, and look how that worked out. Or rather how it didn't. Signing free agent relief pitchers can be such a gamble. I'm more comfortable with what we have in the system already. On that note, what is the consensus on Trevor May for 2018? Will they try him in the bullpen or give him a shot as starter again?- 53 replies

Article: Building A Super Bullpen
Doctor Wu replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ah, the infamous Ron Davis syndrome! Maybe not as horrible as Steve Blass Disease, but nevertheless an ailment that makes longtimeTwins fans cringe! That aside, good points about Rodney. I'm not giddy over the signing, but hopefully he'll be a stabilizing presence in the closer's role. Then again ....- 53 replies

Very informative roundup, Seth. Thanks for that. Interesting to hear that Mientkiewicz will be the Tigers' hitting coach ... in Toledo. Poor guy; that's a long way from his home in Florida!

Article: Twins Sending Relief Messages
Doctor Wu replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yeah, I think finding closers is not such a difficult task, or at least not one you need to over-think. Given the opportunity, some guys rise to the task and shine. Remember some guy named Joe Nathan? The Jepson trade could certainly be called a bad one, or at least not a very productive one. But if I remember correctly they picked up Burton in the off-season for practically nothing and he performed very well that first year.- 43 replies

Article: Winter Meetings: Reliever Roulette
Doctor Wu replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well written article and good analysis, Nick. As you so accurately stated: These are hefty prices to pay for relief pitchers, the most notoriously volatile of baseball assets. While it would be nice to bring in a veteran reliever with some firepower, I would hesitate to pay big bucks and a multi-year contract to some guy like Rodney who might implode in the first half. Frankly, I'd rather take my chances with the kids we have in the system already. -
Article: 4 Stories To Watch At The Winter Meetings
Doctor Wu replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
On the possibility of the Twins signing Yu Darvish, every post or article I read mentions the "ties" that he has to Thad Levine from his days in Texas. But how much of a factor is that really? Just because Levine was in the front office at the same time, does that really signify some sort of strong relationship he had with Darvish? I mean, were they golfing buddies, going out for sushi together, swapping wives or something else that might have created a strong bond? Otherwise, it doesn't seem to me that such a tenuous "link" will play any part in Darvish deciding to sign with the Twins or not. Any thoughts? -

Article: Three Bagger: Darvish, Marte & Otani
Doctor Wu replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't think it's fair to cite Park or even Nishioka as comparisons or yardsticks as to whether or not we should take a chance on Otani, just because they are Asian players who played overseas, Park, for example, turned out to have an injury his first year with the Twins, and last year, after a very impressive Spring Training, he spent all year in the minors. I really don't think he's gotten a fair chance yet. Sure, he's not a young prospect at this point, and I understand the view that we need to "move on" from his signing, but I still think he could do some damage in the majors, that of the positive variety. But back to Otani; I'd love to gamble on his potential!- 67 replies

Article: What's Next For Kennys Vargas?
Doctor Wu replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hard to say what is going to influence the front office's decision at this point. As others have already noted, Vargas possesses some impressive power, and if given the chance to show his stuff over a full season ... hmm, the results could either be very satisfactory, or very frustrating. I'm not sure if they are going to base their decision on Spring Training success, or lack of it. Based on that evaluative process, Park should have made the team last season, and he didn't. I guess I'm like most of those that have posted already: give the guy a chance. I'd had to lose him before the season opens and then see him produce All-Star stats for another team. -
I like what Jimmer said about Buxton gaining experience and taking better routes to balls, and perhaps not quite being so eager to slam dance with the outfield walls so often. What he might lose in speed he can somewhat compensate for with experience and knowledge. In the meantime, let's enjoy such marvelous fielding. I hope there is no noticeable drop-off anytime soon.

Article: Molitor's Manager Of The Year Chances
Doctor Wu replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Molitor was the one who most exceeded expectations, but is that enough to win the award? No idea. If I had to bet money, I'd put it on Hinch being the winner.- 30 replies

Article: Modern Era Ballot Full Of Flaws
Doctor Wu replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yeah, as others have noted, a lot of borderline players on that list. Some you could make a case for based on WAR or "clutch" performances, but too many are in the Jim Rice (who DID make it) and David Cone territory. That said, I agree that Alan Trammell should be in there. Very underrated player.- 40 replies

Kudos to Buxton on the award. Well deserved! If he hadn't of won, I would be shouting profanity! Still can't figure out why Dozier won, or more so, why Mauer wasn't even a finalist. More head scratching decisions when it comes to "choosing" finalists for these awards. I shouldn't get all worked up about the seemingly nonsensical process involved in picking the winners, but when all is said and done -- or tabulated --- these awards certainly do factor into a player's career overview.

Article: The 5 Best Pitching Gambles In Free Agency

Article: Sizing Up The 2017-18 Offseason
Doctor Wu replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
On the subject of adding a free agent DH, I'm not that gung-ho on the idea. You can spend a ton of money on some home-run machine like Napoli who ends up barely hitting for a .200 average (and less than a .300 OBP), or you can do as others have suggested, and have a rotating mix of guys like Mauer and Grossman to handle the DH spot. No, they don't hit for power, but they DO get on base a lot. Something to be said for that. And it doesn't cost us a lot, seeing as how they are already under contract. That money would be more wisely spent on either another starter and/or an extra bullpen arm.
