Not necessarily.  If the Twins like what they see in Spring Training, they can make a trade to keep him and not be subject to the Rule 5 rules.

I'm not crazy about putting guys on the active roster who can't be sent down while we need Varland to be on the active list be sent down. But if they trade for him, creating options, then I'm ok with this.

Yeah, Rule V guys present a problem since they can’t be optioned, but if he’s a solid arm, they’ll find a way to keep him , whether it is using other player’s options, the IL, or making a trade to keep him.

Because the claiming team needs to put the prospect on the 26 man MLB roster for the entire year. The Rule 5 pick cannot be optioned.

Not for the minor league portion of the draft, which is what he was referring to.

Thanks for noticing that one, I didn't see it. Hajjar hasn't stuck with any team very long after we traded him to the Reds.

Hajjar was traded with another prospect for Brown. Like Steer and CES Brown had a promising year last year and a not so good second year. Hajjar was moved to the bullpen and did not have a good year so he was available. With his status as a high draft pick, being eft handed and breathing somebody was going to take a chance on him

Maybe he'll be our long man out of the pen since he's been a starter. I think the fact they are trying to fill MLB roster spots with rule 5 pickups shows us how active we're going to be in the free agent and trade markets. Nothing but minor league signing rest of the off-season is my guess. Pretty sad. A first baseman like Diaz should be attainable . Rays are always looking for pitching. Paddack and a prospect for Diaz would give us a starting first baseman that we need. Not holding my breath....

He may be good he may not. Folks here continue to believe Varland is now the answer in the bullpen many of them thought he was backend starter. He’s neither it’s time to move on.

Thanks, that makes sense.  So the Twins lost just one player in the entire rule 5(major and minor league portion).  Looks like they did ok at this stage even though it's still a crap shoot.

Except in some rare years, it's impossible for anything bad to happen.  Losing Olivar or especially Rosario (who isn't really a threat to make or do anything in the majors) is no big deal.  Olivar has a small chance.  Even Eiberson can be a negative if the Twins incorrectly keep him the whole year and potentially lose out on a vet reliever they think they don't have room for.
