Realistically they did it with a Philly misplayed flyball to LF to score to tie and an HBP with a WP chaser to get winning run. Thats not negative its facts. It was surprising to see Rocco employ the bunt in the 9th. Hold that thought Rocco. Especially in the bottom of the tenth!!

Way to keep the players accountable! You're the master of hyperbole and creating false narratives. I never said Rocco sucks. But, his constant reliance on a pinch hitter that is now 0-25 in that role and before today his unwillingness to bunt a runner to 3B are things that should be called out. CCHOF5yearstoolate 1

Twins_Fan_in_NJ Verified Member Posted July 24, 2024 Posted July 24, 2024 Does Rocco 'suck' - No. Is Rocco a good manager - No. Both of those statements can be true. Very rarely is anything going to fall entirely on one end of the spectrum. He's a mediocre to decent manager who makes questionable in-game decisions rooted in analytics rather than a feel for what's happening. Could the Twins do worse? Absolutely. But, could they have a better manager than Rocco? Yes, they could. Parfigliano, Tlaker and USAFChief 3

The hypocrisy is exhausting, so I thumbs down. I think you'll live! Who trashed Rocco for bunting the winning run to 3rd?? Nobody. Everyone was happy and surprised he did. Pity he didn't do the same yesterday in the 10th. Sheesh. At least attack people for what they actually said. Tlaker 1

If you can't see that is exactly what happens around here, particularly with people seriously thinking he's cost the team upwards of 10 wins this year, I don't know what to tell you. They had a bunch of chances to score runs before the Margot pinch hit, but that apparently was the game defining moment? Give me a break! I'm viewed as some sort of Rocco defender, but the reality is that managers really don't have that much of an effect on the games - particularly regarding in-game moves. Creating a culture and the day-to-day refining and getting guys right is FAR more important. I wouldn't really care if he got fired, but you can do a LOT worse than Rocco. And it's an undeniable fact that he's only criticized when a decision goes wrong and does not get anywhere near that amount of praise when a decision works out.

Serious question …. why not bunt earlier in the game and possibly score a run or two? Why is bunting not viable, whenever it is a possibility?

Not bunting is not a "Rocco" thing, it's a "baseball in 2024" thing. The team with the most sacrifice bunts in the league has 18 in 102 games. Danchat 1

Sure, that's a bad decision. But acting like every time he does it it's some sort of game losing decision, when they grounded out with a guy on 3rd to end the inning multiple times is obviously a bigger reason for not scoring a run. And the alternative is having a lefty who hits .100-something face a specialist designed to get them out is guaranteed to succeed.

Players play. They can't chose when/if to succeed. Managers have 100 percent control over their own decisions. Youre comparing apples and oranges. When a player repeatedly fails, he gets replaced. I ask for the manager to be held to the same standard. And for the record, the only person who came on thr game thread AFTER a walk off win to slap down other posters was you.
