I'd have taken brecht there..... If you never take a pitcher early, it's harder to get elite talent....

Not a fan of selecting two very similar, low ceiling players like that. 

It's supposedly a bad draft so maybe there are legit problems with the 'upside' choices but still . . . Particularly odd given that the org is a little light in OF depth.

They've picked Petty, Prielipp, Soto in that general range the last 3 years, and Canterino just a little later in 2019. I was also hoping for Brecht there, but they do take pitchers early.

Not that into the diversity/upside for the Twins draft so far.

I think maybe the theory might be that there is a kind of safety in good athletes, particularly in a weak draft.  They will find a defensive home and if they can just get some of the tools to work on offense you end up with something, even if it doesn't end up a complete profile.  Kind of makes sense I suppose

"End up with something" seems like a poor strategy for top picks.

This is supposedly a terrible draft. Most teams, from what I read, aren't excited about anyone after the first round. If they get something out of this draft, we should be impressed.

Culpepper isn't underslot. DeBarge maybe a little, but that's not super valuable in a weak draft.

What does that have to do with drafting players 10 to 100 spots earlier than projected?

Culpepper was ranked 19th at Perfect Game, DeBarge was 35th at ESPN.  Opinions vary
