Minnesota Twins Now Have Difficulty Finding Room for Kyle Gibson

Recommended Posts

I looked at how well the Twins have pitched since ending the 10-game

losing streak.

You can read the rest of Minnesota Twins Now Have Difficulty Finding Room for Kyle Gibson at Yahoo! Sports.

Does Gibson still need more starts at AAA? Who should go out of the rotation when he gets called up?

Diamond's pattern has been 1 good start 2 bad starts. Send him down. They're undoubtedly showcasing Pelph. Deduno has pitched well. Walters and Correia have been good. Diamond should be the odd man out. Let him correct his issues in AAA.

I've heard both Gardy and Terry Ryan say they want to see more 'consistency' out of him, obviously THEY don't think he’s tearing up the minors - and they're the ones that count.

So they need consistency from Gibson, but the rest of the staff can fit the very definition of inconsistent? No double standard there.

maybe he'll get his consistency right after the Super Two status date :-)

I think Ryan is committed to Pelfrey in hopes he reaches (exceeds) the "Corriea level" so he can sign him to $3-5 MM contract for 2014. Pitch-watching Thursday's game was a clinic in PtoC--fastballs up and over the middle challenging the batter. Result: many hits. Luckily for Correira only one run. Swarzak was even luckier--zero runs. Alas, the luck ran out in the 8th and PHL scored (only) twice. The "pitching" I saw could easily have resulted in 10 runs for PHL. Ryan is a big believer in this type of "pitcher": cheap, PtoC, and and doesn't give up. He would have 10 of these guys and just shuffle them around as "options" permit. Maybe Gibson's "lack of consistentcy" is not enough PtoC.

The Twins have finally found that decidedly average starting rotation that was promised to be such an improvement over last years horrendous rotation and you all want to start demolishing it before we can see how long this "consistency" can last. Remember the only member of the current rotation that it make sense to jettison for Gibson is Pelfrey. That's not likely to happen unless Pelf is REALLY bad.

I would think with every good start Pelphrey makes, he's a candidate for the NL (Giants?) I think Walters is cheap, so he's not going anywhere. And i have a hard time believing Ryan will trade Correa this soon.

come July, so the Twins can unload a few by the trading deadline. Then there will be plenty of room for Gibson and even Meyer if he feels better.

No hurry for Gibson. He has to be on an innings count.

Come September, the Twins will be able to do a six-man rotation, and have enough of a bullpen to only have Gibson do 4-5 innings a start, and he can still get 4-6 starts with the team before season's end.

However Gibson is on pace to be past his innings limit by the trade deadline. He'll likely only have 2 or 3 starts left in him once the MLB All-Star game occurs. He's already at 80 innings. They could sit him now at Rochester but then their whole speil about consistancy would kind of look foolish.

Pelfrey still sucks. His 6.40 ERA still isn't going down.

Walters or Deduno will falter soon, don't worry. We can't possibly continue playing this well for this long.

You mean to say it doesn't already?

I desperately want Correia to go ape through July so they can trade him.

So do I, but when do the Twins do that? They have refused to trade Span, Willingham, and Cuddyer at the most recent trade deadlines. Correia pitches good and the Twins FO realizes it's still an area of need and they probably decide to keep him. They signed him for two years and I'm sure they probably intended to have him for both (much like Josh Willingham). Wish away though, but history would suggest disappointment. Again.

Let me see...hope that a guy pitches well--so you can trade him? Ah, what a strategy! Trade all of your good players for minor leaguers. It all makes sense now--a site that spends as many inches (more?) on minor leaguers than on the Twins, so of course the more minor leaguers, the more "prospects" to talk about!

If memory serves me....hasn't shedding payroll been a Twins priority in recent times?

I'm ok with keeping Gibson down for now. I do believe he is ready for the call up and he'll probably get it the next time the Twins go to AAA for a pitcher. I would like to see Gibson come up and get at least 30 innings or so this year to help him set better expectations for next seaason. This season is seeing if they have anything in what pitchers they do have. Is Pelfry turning the corner? he has aq 94 mph fast ball. if/when he regains command he could be useful, resign for next season, be traded... Walters could be a cheap stop gap for a couple seasons or through next July and get flipped for prospects when Meyer/ May are ready. Same with Dedunno. If one of those 3 pitchers continue to pitch like a 12-15 game winner into next season what kind of haul in prospects could the Twins get? Would that be worth letting Gibson spend a few more weeks at AAA?

Im losing all hope on Gibson, he keeps gettin our hopes up then has a horrible game like today. Today he let up 4ER in 6IP, He keeps taking a step forward then backwards. Im beggining to think he will be no better than a solid number 4 maybe a decent 3.

I think you're overreacting a little bit. That kind of outing doesn't qualify as horrible. It's not like Justin Verlander has never given up 4ER in 6 innings.

Gibson has had 3 stinkers and 2 meh's among his 14 starts this season.

I've lost all hope as well.

Horrible? Check the box score again, he allowed 3ER and at least another one of those should have been unearned. Rochester had 3 errors today while Gibson was pitching. The Twins said they wanted more consistency, and he's delivered, allowing 6 ER in his last 19 innings pitched. There really isn't an excuse to keep him down. Is P.J. Walters really going to block Gibson?

Don't play the stock market!!! ;)

Timing is all. Gibson can wait, Twins are probably going nowhere this year. September should be fine and then it is on to next year.

Um, just filling you in but Gibson is on an innings limit. He won't be pitching for anyone by, probably, sometime in August.

If that's the case, why even bother with September (given his possible innings limit), let's just wait until next season. And then let's wait until May for the extra-extra year of control, then let's wait until July to avoid the extra arb year of that extra-extra control year....

Gibson is nearly 26, not some teen that needs excessive coddling, he needs to start facing major league hitters, the sooner the better.

Pelfrey is actually markedly better than a month ago. He's getting a lot more ground ball outs and his stats have been trending up in general.

Diamond has been having short outings. I suspect he is not in good shape because of the timing of the bone chip discovery - I think he was just beginning his throwing program in preparation for spring training if memory serves.

I think things will continue as they are as long as they continue as they are.

- Yogi Berra, something he didn't say but should have.

Betting Gibson doesn't come up until/unless someone falls on their face or gets injured.

Yogi Berra's wit hinges on conceptual redundancy and logical inconsistency, not tautology. "Predictions are hard...especially about the future." The phrase is not repeated, but the first concept is echoed in the second phrase. "It's so crowded, nobody goes there anymore." Apparent logical inversion, yet it's a turn on the concept of "nobody" as in nobody important. Berra's sayings always imply a subtle observation on the human condition, which makes them far more interesting than merely repeating the same thing.

Just to clarify, the defensive whiz, Son of Sal, had 2 of those 3 errors, which directly led to the 3 runs that were scored by Gwinnett in the 4th inning- oh- and he was O-fer the night, BA now at .154 in SSS. Chris Hermann pinch hit for him and came up big in the bottom of the 9th.

Major overreaction about Gibson's night, he's proven he's more than ready to move up to the next level.

I may overreact when I say im losing all hope but come on why cant he just get it together? I mean if he has a 3.30 ERA in triple A than whats he gonna have in the majors? 4+? Its not like hes 20 years old either, hes pretty old and doesnt have alot of growing to do so its not like hes gonna get a whole lot better.

Go over to the minor league thread to see my response to you. It's actually a lot better than what you think. His FIP is 2.94, which ranks 2nd overall in the International League.

I cited his last 10 games in the other thread, they are quite impressive, despite the clinkers. He's actually been decently consistent, and actually more consistent than just about anyone on the Twins or the Red Wings.

Its an assumption that 3.30 in AAA means a 4 point something in the majors.

Some pitchers have done better and some pitchers have done exactly the same and some pitchers got beaten silly.

We will find out about Kyle when he is called up. I look forward to it but I can wait if the current MLB five keep pitching decent.
