So we stepped up our game quite a bit this year and some of you should really enjoy this tool for building a 2023 Twins roster. If you've used our previous years' spreadsheet, this works very similarly but after you're done, you click submit and it creates a thread with your name in the Twins forum so others can comment and participate in talking about your roster.

You can mix and match any players and dollar figures you want. The only thing set in stone is Dead Money, the rest is entirely up to you. The "budget" is set right around the 2022 payroll of $140m and is merely a guideline to see if you're under- or over-spending.

After you've built your custom roster, use the Your Comments & Explanation field to type out your thoughts, reasoning, and explain just how it is you managed to sign Aaron Judge and trade for Zack Wheeler.

Those totals are for nearly two seasons. From the article, "Here is a position-by-position breakdown of the 2022-23 free-agent class, including players with options and opt-outs after the 2022 season.

 

Players are grouped by position and ranked by their FanGraphs' wins above replacement total across 2021-22 (as of Sept. 9)..."

Interesting how all our rosters are under budget... Is that 2-3 decades of Terry Ryan training that we haven't shook off yet?

Some comments: having defaults tends to make the rosters look very similar. Estimated salaries are often tough to gauge—for example I think Elvis Andrus will only get a 7-figure contract. Trade scenarios vary greatly—what are Kepler and/or Polanco worth? No one know where and how significantly the injury bug will hit.

Is that a feature or a bug? I could go either way. It’s hard to get a read on that in a season where the roster is solid but not great. Simply rolling out another similar roster will likely pay more dividends than usual given the health of the 2022 roster. I think people are cautious of making big changes for that reason.

But we rolled out this same tool to Brewers fans and the output was more varied, probably because they have 18 arb cases, more committed money, and roster decisions are a lot more difficult. Homogeny with this Twins roster shouldn’t be that surprising.

FYI, the buyout totals for Sano, Bundy, and Archer are reflected in the 2022 payroll, not the following season. So they should be removed from the dead money category.

Are you sure about that? I keep hearing back and forth about it and if anyone has written substantiation of either side, please share.

I didn't listen to the entire podcast but before and after the 43 minute mark I thought the discussion was about opt-out by a player (Correa being the subject), not buy-out by the team for those specific players.  Am I missing something?

43:25 in the iHeart radio app. The episode is breaking down every aspect of the payroll, including buy outs, arbitration, guaranteed contracts, etc.
