Winder looked good. He got hurt twice. I guess this is a situation where Rocco is damned if he does or damned if he doesn't when you lift Winder after less than 70 pitches; fair decision.

Archer on the il. How are they possibly going to be able to make up 4 innings every five days

Maybe they'll have to bring up Varland for a second start.

The offense usually takes the day off against good pitching.

They're just the unluckiest team ever.  They always seem to face a pitcher who is doing well.

Sandy Leon has been on an absolute tear* at bat in the month of September, with an OPS of .900.  I am sure this pattern will continue.

* Covering a grand total of 6 plate appearances

When they bring up a player for the first time as the extra man for a doubleheader (Varland) do they need to use an option in sending him back down? If so, then there's no cost to having him up again. If not, then bringing him back up would require them to use one if they didn't keep him on the roster the rest of the season, right?

I think “options” are based on longevity not how many times they are sent down

Once a player is added to a team’s 40-man roster, his team has three options, or three different seasons in which the club may to send him to the minor leagues without having to clear waivers. A player on the 40-man roster playing in the minors is on optional assignment. There is no limit on the number of times a club may promote and demote a player during one option season.

Cave in LF makes two plays back to back that our OF needs to make. Gordon and Garlick do not make those plays, maybe Gordon with several more years of experience out there. These were the type of plays that need to be made by any team's outfielders if they are going to succeed.

Plus, I think, if the player is used as the 27th man for double header, that does not trigger an option year. It is a special case, by rule.

So he’s not on the 40 man?

sorry we’re talking about Varland

That's what I was hoping. That may be one reason why they aren't bringing him back up.

He is on the 40 man, but bringing him up for a double header for the 27th man does not activate the option for the year. So using him like that does not waste an option year. I think that is correct. I could be wrong, but I think that is how it works.

I thought that being on the 40 man roster automatically starts the option year, whether you’re in the majors or not

don't know if bieber comes out for the 7th, but for the series, cleveland's starting pitcher line is 18 innings, 2 runs.  your minnesota twins - 10 2/3 innings, 11 runs.

No. You have to be called up and placed on the active roster to use an option year. Some guys that are regulars still have options, That is why Sano could be sent down after being on the 40 man for more than 3 years. He had an option left. If you stay on the active, which means you are also on the forty man, after called up the first time, you cold still have 2 option years left 4 years later, for instance.

They could also add him, and not option him back to AAA, would do the same
