Correct, that's the point I was making. A number of posters on this site assert that Rocco is just in his office playing around in Excel--clearly he's not, because otherwise there's no chance Garlick is batting 4th in this game.

If he does play against a righty, he certainly shouldn't be batting cleanup. This really shouldn't be debatable, and would seem to suggest that Rocco put the laptop away, as there is no data whatsoever that supports the decision to bat Garlick 4th against a righty. I'd think the reasoning for his placement in the lineup is to put a lefty masher between your 2 lefties that you aren't going to pinch hit for so if/when Cleveland brings in a lefty to face Kepler and Kirilloff they also have to pitch to the lefty masher. Why he's starting is more confusing to me.

Kyle Garlick is not good against right handed pitching. It's more than reasonable to question why he'd be starting against a righty when there are better options and you know he's going to start the night game against the lefty. Career Major League stats for Kyle Garlick: Vs Lefties: 143 PAs, .277/.329/.623/.952 Vs Righties: 113 PAs, .192/.257/.298/.555

Buxton was obviously not going to play both games, and Jeffers was only going to catch one. That leaves Garlick or Contreras. I question him hitting 4th in the lineup, but you only have so many options for players.

Or you hit the lefty Contreras. Or you activate Polanco like there's rumors they'll do for the second game or tomorrow. There were options. I don't think it's the end of the world, and I actually understand the logic of hitting him between Kep and Alex, but there were certainly options for not starting him in this game. Have Gio have the night game off and let Miranda play against the lefty instead of the righty while putting your better defender at 3rd with Smeltzer and his 3rd percentile K rate on the mound.

I mean, I understand that to an extent, other than I don't think it makes a whole lost of sense to waste 2-3 PAs in innings 1-6 just to give Francona more to think about should he want to put Hentges or Gose in during the 7th-9th. When you consider that Kepler has actually been slightly better against lefties than righties this year, while Kiriloff has been a black hole against lefties, it probably makes more sense to bat Kiriloff 4th, and then pinch hit Garlick should Francona bring in the lefty to face him. Let Gio DH, and bat 6th.
