Darin Mastroianni is going on the Disabled List with his ankle injury. Oswaldo Arcia is coming back. One game with Twins. One game with Red Wings. Back in Minnesota soon!

I can't believe the Twins are still doing this crap. At some point, can someone not understand that there is absolutely no point in keeping all of these marginal players off the disabled list? They've done it with Tolbert, they've done it with Casilla, they've done it with Mastroianni...who cares if they end up being on the DL a few days more than necessary? You lose nothing. If you can get Mauer for an extra few days, that's one thing, but losing Darin Mastroianni for an extra week will have no impact on the team.

As it is, the Twins did see a negative impact from not having a healthy player with the team for over two weeks on an already short bench.

I have nothing against Doumit (although he's been sub-par so far this year) but hopefully this means a little less of him. Sprinkle in Parm and Morneau at DH to open up RF for Arcia.

Oh come on!

I expect to see him tonight, and it turns out they sent him down after Thursday. Now I find out they're bringing him right back up? I can't catch a break.

The Twins are suddenly very thin in CF.

The Rangers need to trade Julio Borbon by tomorrow afternoon. Orioles, Astros and Mets are reported to be interested. Should the Twins be interested?

Also, I was on board with Hicks starting the year as the starting CF, but the Arcia method HAS to be vastly superior. A couple days here and there, a couple weeks of quality playing time for someone's DL stint. Less pressure. A hunger to perform so well that you CAN'T send them down.

How bad can Arcia be in CF? I mean we're putting up with Willingham in LF and Plouffe at 3rd most of the time. Would it really be so bad if Ozzie gets a few starts in the middle?

This says he's going ON the disabled list. On.

He was in the game for 5 at bats last night; he's going on the DL today. What's the problem here?

The on-again off-again nature of this injury, and the diagnosis that didn't seem to find the risk in giving him 5 at bats last night.

Really?

the problem is that this injury occurred during spring training and he has tried to play through it for 2-3 weeks. Most of the time he has been unavailable.

No, most of the time he's been a backup who wasn't going to play anyway. This really isn't that big of a deal. If he's functional enough to play an entire game last night, I'm not getting pissed that they waited until today to put him on the DL.

Well, they were thin entering ST. Benson was a mess last year. Hicks had never played above AA. That left Mastro as the sure thing, and while he had three 500+ PA seasons in the minors, he could hardly be regarded as some sort of Iron Horse.

A poster in another thread felt my characterization of the lack of CF depth going into spring training as negligent was extreme and unfair. Tomorrow night, the Twins will take the field with a .044 hitter in center and no non-emergency sub on the roster.

Good call on Borbon, but contenders will offer more, and I've heard through multiple reliable TD sources that if the Twins don't get a player like Borbie, then either we don't need him or he was impossible to get...

No, most of the time he's been a backup who wasn't going to play anyway. .

Setting aside the laughable defense that a backup doesn't need to be healthy because he's not 'going to play anyway', Mastro is the only backup to a double A guy batting about zero, so that basically makes him a defacto starter for a franchise with no decent alternative.

And you're fine with yet another injured Twin finally landing on the DL after days or weeks of limited availability? That's cool, as long as you've stopped voting.

Seriously, man, don't vote. Otherwise you're passing unqualified judgement on professional politicians, just like I'm unqualified to claim that the Twins training/medical staff are pretty bad at identifying and treating injuries.

Another weird Twins medical staff issue with a player. This, however, does have a silver lining, for the first time in forever with this team. Arcia can be spot-started in LF, RF, and DH, giving Willingham DH-time, and replacing Parmelee and Doumit once in awhile (and actually Mauer and Morneau).

By the way, it is good to have Escobar with the team. I take back things I have said about him. Having him as a guy who can play the OF in a pinch (and C, probably) is very valuable.

Arcia may play center field for a day or two to rest Hicks. If Hicks struggles a lot this could become an issue in the next two weeks.

I'm having a hard time understanding the angst over Mastro. He was healthy enough to appear in 8 games through the 15th, including a complete game the 9th and 15th. He never sat for more than 3 days without getting into a game, including off days and cancellations. He was put on the DL one game after playing a full 9 innings. His role is a bench player. I have often complained in the past about the Twins playing short because they are often slow to put players on the DL. This doesn't appear to be one of those cases. If anything, it's the opposite.

Most MLB position players can play OF in a pinch. Cerainly if you're a good enough baseball player to play SS, you can fake being an OFer.

In through the nose, my friend, the poster and allies that you addressed have been doing this "laughable" shtick since, well, the 70s (See no Evil, Hear no Evil, yadda, yadda...you guys all think TR and Gardy are Evil....and...and...you guys are all just haters!...not "real fans"!.... and....where's your medical license, anyway?....yadda, yadda)

Not according to DicknBert and Whatshername- the mouthpieces and the potted plant practically had Mastro facing amputation since April 1. Seriously, if this is even partially true, the Twins have been dangerously thin in CF for quite some time, especially in light of the starting rookie CF who is threatening to set all-time records in futility. Poor foresight all the way around.

Now let's see if Gardy's magic "Walking Shoe" can get Mastro back to 100% by May 1.

The shin and the ankle are not the same thing, correct? Mastro hurt his ankle on Monday and the Twins played shorthanded on Tuesday because of that. On a related topic, who is the Twins' backup CF now? Escobar, Ramirez, Carroll? And the Twins' leadoff hitter until Hicks starts hitting is Dozier?

mlbtraderumors.com had a report that players on the 40-man roster (like Arcia) need to stay in the minors for 20 days of the season in order to avoid a full year of service time. If this is true, and Arcia stays up the balance of the season, then both Arcia and Hicks will get full years of service time for 2013. I thought I read in one of the newspapers (PP I think) that Arcia only need 12 days in the minors to avoid a full year, but I'm not sure of that.

It really sounds like the reports that this is his spring training injury "flaring up" are not entirely accurate. My understanding is that he's actually been available most of this time, the concern was more that they weren't sure he could play a full nine innings.

We may not have even noticed the issue yesterday, except that it happened to coincide with Hammer getting sick.

Guys sprain their ankles. It happens. They were forced to scratch him, and then immediately after the game they put him on the DL and brought back Arcia. What more do you want?

Don't use facts. Fans have their story lines they need to stick with: Mauer is over paid, Gardy only plays his guys, guy goes on DL it's the Twins fault.

Hicks improved once Arcia joined him in New Britain last year. Although it was only two games, his approach at the plate the last two nights was much better after Arcia was called up to Minnesota as well. I don't have any quantitative data to back up any theory but perhaps having another young, similarly hyped rookie he is familiar with could have a positive impact on Hicks.
