But still, I think the official scorer is supposed to look at who made the initial misplay, and not at what another defender could have done to pull the fat from the fire. Official fielding stats are way insufficient to the task, and better analytics still are far from complete.
 

And they will trace the runner at 3rd back to the initial error as well.

It is just hard to take when the bottom of the lineup scores one run, loads the bases, turns the lineup.... and the supposed .400 hitter pops a lazy fly and inning/rally/threat over.
