2019/20 Off-season Manager Openings

With the season winding down, let's talk about what manager spots will be open this winter.

Already open:

Kansas City - Ned Yost retiring

San Diego - Andy Green fired after 4 seasons.

San Francisco - Bruce Bochy retiring

Potential Openings:

Chicago Cubs - There seems to be a lot of smoke that Joe Maddon will get the blame for missing the playoffs and be fired.

Detroit - How long does Gardy want to keep doing this?

Pittsburgh - Clint Hurdle has been there for a long time now (since 2011) but things have been trending the wrong way for a few seasons. Maybe they finally decide to rebuild for real and get a new manager to lead the way.

Philadelphia - Bryce Harper didn't exactly inspire confidence when discussing Gabe Kapler.

Are there others that I'm missing?

Maddon won’t get fired. His contract is up and it’s likely it won’t be renewed.

It was confirmed today he will not return. I guess it’s not quite a firing...

It kind of is ... but I look at it as a firing if there is still time left on the contract. This was more of a ... 'non-renew' ... but the end result is the same. He's done after today's game.

I'm not sure which one to apply for.

I'd kind of like SF, but unless I get a really good salary, I couldn't afford to live in the city. San Diego would be good, too- even if your team is crappy, you can go surfing after and fuggetaboutit.

I like steak, and BBQ, so KC might be OK, but it's in Missouri, so there's that. But I'd really, really want that Cubs job, tho, cuz I really loved living in Chicago, and maybe my old apartment down the block from Wrigley would be available again.  That would be cool.

Lots of noise about the Angels moving on and a number of potential openings due to managers leaving for other openings that they'd prefer for various reasons (Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Rockies, White Sox).

The White Sox don’t have a managerial opening. They’ve already stated publicly they want Renteria to continue in that role. I haven’t heard that Renteria doesn’t want to stay.

The guy I’m watching is Maddon. Best manager in baseball in my opinion.

Rumor is the Angels will make a full court press to hire Maddon.

If I’m Maddon... I’d take the Padres job. He will be overflowing with depth in San Diego which is what Maddon does better than everyone else.

Buddy of mine had this prediction last week:

Ausmus out, Maddon in. Girardi to Cubbies. Kind of makes sense.

Hurdle is out at Pittsburgh, Morosi thinks Twins derek Shelton is a good fit.

Pirates fans of course don't like ownership and wonder why Shelton would want to go to a team that doesn't spend any money. ;)

Unless a franchise situation is known to be toxic, anyone will accept an offer if one is received. There are only 30 jobs. If it goes badly for reasons outside your control, some other team will take you. That's where "retreads" come from.

And I think the conventional wisdom is that it's a feather in any organization's cap, to have their assistants promoted to other organizations. More assistants can always be found.

agreed, I think Shelton would be foolish not to take any MLB manager job (were one offered) because there are many years where none are open, and many qualified candidates go their whole career without reaching that pinnacle.

I just thought it was funny that the Pirates fans complain like they’re the only fan base of a team with stingy ownership.

Some of my Cubs fan friends are predicting David Ross will be the new Cubs manager.

Wouldn’t it be interesting if the white Sox fire Renteria to hire Maddon, after the Cubs did the same thing?

Last year... Teams were raiding the same organizations as they try to modernize. The Rays, The Dodgers, The Cubs, The Astros.

The Twins are now one of those clubs.

If last year was any indication... I believe this will continue and I predict we will hear Shelton's name mentioned as a candidate for multiple manager openings.

I wouldn't be shocked if he landed one of them.

I'd put the odds at 60-40 there's a manager job open in Dodgerland before long.

Certainly possible. Patience is a virtue but at some point you gotta get that team over the hump.

If you were Joe Maddon, arguably the most desirable manager candidate out there, where would you go?

Angels have Trout, but they're stuck in perpetual mediocrity.

Phillies have a ton of talent...

Padres??

Does he transition to the front office?

Angels are the organization he cut his teeth with, they have an impressive farm system that is about to launch multiple top players into the majors in the next two years to go with the best player of the generation, the best defender of the generation, and arguably the most intriguing talent of the generation (Shohei).

According to Joel Sherman of the NY Post, Twins bench coach Derek Shelton will interview for the Mets manager job next week.

I mean, it's the NY Post, but Joel Sherman seems to usually know what he's talking about.

8 manager openings now... Odds are the Twins losing one or more on the coaching staff.

Of all the top 3 coaches in the Twins org, I hope that Wes Johnson stays the most. This is not to belittle Rowson or Shelton and I haven't seen any rumors on him. I just want to see what year 2 with Wes Johnson can do with this staff.

Can't see either a first-year pitching coach, or this particular hitting coach, as managerial candidates at this time.
