Seattle Slough

I went through Seattle once. Maybe a few other towns out that way, too. Mind’s not that clear about that trip, uh, journey, but I don’t recall seeing any sloughs. So I never could figure out why horse people get so excited talking about Seattle’s sloughs. Imagine what all that water could to a horse race…

But this is about baseball so let’s talk about baseball people. You know who I’m talking about… those little round guys dressed in faux horsehide and leather gloves. They’re a little unseamly (went a long way to get that one), but once you get to know them you realize they’re often well grounded and only occasionally fly off the handle.

For God’s sake stop me!

Mariner is another word for sailor. Comes from the French, marinier, with lots of mayonnaise, which in turn comes for the medieval Latin marinarius, who often ate their words with a lot of marinara. No matter where it originated, mariner still means sailor, as in

And that’s been Seattle’s problem; they’ve been around since Bud Seeling pulled a fast one and moved the Pilots from Seattle in the middle of the night and had them rebaptized in Milwaukee as the Brewers, that was about, oooh nineteen-and seventy-seven, and Seattle fans have been looking for a good time ever since. So much so they’ve become Sleepless.

Probably why the Mariners are one of seven MLB teams that have never won a World Series and one of two MLB teams to have never even played in a World Series! And that’s despite posting the winningest (is that really a word?) American League regular season ever, 116 wins in 2001.

So the Mariners are sailing into town today, hoping to tie an anchor around the Twins’ necks, but if the Twins sink ‘em for three straight those hapless bluejackets will only be streamlining the Twins yacht for the playoff regatta. And in that case those Seattle sailors will still be looking for a good time.

Sorry, Kelly. Maybe you should check out the Minnesota farm boys instead... especially the older ones... who live on a hobby farm... in southern Minnesota... whose name means "beloved"...

Like we always used to tell one of our appropriately named college buddies when we got up from the bar for a trip to the bathroom

I need some time to marinate on this before I respond

I thought the name was spelled Seattle Slew. Slew is the past tense of slay. So what exactly did Seattle kill - brick and mortar stores? Music? Apple Computers? Good defensive baseball?

At least we know that Target Field won't be a slough ... Drainage!!!

I'm guessing double-header Wednesday though.

Saw only light showers off and on today. 30% chance of rain come game time, partly sunny. They will play tonight.

If spelling/typing isn't your thing, one could slip up and come up with marnier. Which, in it's Grand form, goes well with a good cigar.

As long as you're not marinating your cigar in the marnier, I agree wholeheartedly and render my tacit approval.

Note: Margaritas are also handy depending on the type of cigar

This didn't age well.

I know of something else that didn't age well...

Could really use a bounce back start from Perez tonight.

It seems like in his last couple of starts he wasn't getting that low cutter called for strikes. If he can get that back I think he'll be fine

I've heard that before, but as a whiskey guy that doesn't care for sour I'll have to take your word for it!

... and if he doesn't get those calls, he needs to make the in-game adjustment that Laudner calls for and use that cutter as a show pitch ... He still has the 96 mph four-seamer and a pretty good looking change to get guys out .... Perez has all kinds of stuff this year, but usage has been off against the Rays and Indians.

Oh I completely agree. I was just commenting on what I felt like has been causing him issues as of late.

I'm surprised nobody thought to make an age crack over my ancient mariner post.

Ichiro retired at the beginning of the season though. No need to pile on to the guy.

No, no age cracks here. Some subjects are best left unremarked on.

Let me see if I can help:

"Insert joke about the age of Chief's crack here."

Like that?

I elided over that particular anatomical reference.

I thought maybe it would be a crack to far.

Evidently, I thought wrong.

Those things come with a weedwacker to keep the foliage in check?
