Sano Out Until May

I knew this was gonna be the case. Twins have a history of downplaying things and then coming out later like this.

My guess, he comes back much later than May also and is fairly useless the rest of the season. And why don't they just tell us what this really is? He broke a foot or tore up his ankle or something. There isn't any cut that would take this long to heal, it's just silly they expect people to believe this.

Opens a spot on the roster for Astudillo.

At this point, I would say it is prudent to proceed as if Miguel Sano will never be a major part of this team, maybe ever. He may or may not be able to help out somewhere, but it looks like him being a cornerstone is just not gonna work out.

Apparently he had a 'debridement procedure' at Mayo, according to the Trib. Thus, the extra recovery time.

Yes - I feel bad for him and for his sake I hope for a quick recovery, but at one time I would have been bummed because I thought it would be a set-back for a key to the future really coming into his own.

Now I think he still has potential to be a contributor, but nothing guaranteed, and probably not as one of the team's crucial, irreplaceable cornerstones.

Correct.

I’m hoping this turns into addition by subtraction. Escobar was better at 3rd last year than Sano, maybe we can have a repeat of that with Marwin this year. I’m ready to label Sano as a bust and move on from him being a scholarship player, possible face of franchise, starting regular. Let him fight with Tyler Austin for a roster spot in a couple months.

Until May? Damn.

This injury was horribly managed by the Twins. He got cut in January - he should have been in a boot immediately. Instead they wait 3 weeks to address the issue and he's on the shelf indefinitely.

Terrible communication from the top all the way down. The information the Twins were feeding reporters was also apparently just pure BS.

I don't think you can blame the Twins. How would they know about this till he reported to camp?

This is on Sano. First for it happening (I strongly doubt we actually know what happened) and for not getting the proper medical attention when it did.

If what we're told is anything close to accurate, proper medical attention would have cleared this up well before now.

And if what we're told isn't close to accurate, the need for proper medical attention was even greater.

Either way, that's all on Sano.

Couldn't trade him before because you never trade away young controllable position players. Can't trade once value drops because you're selling low. Can't sell once value drops even lower because no one will buy.

Some called for his trade years ago when his value was sky high. Even his minor league numbers didn't match his hype. Powerful, talented, affable, but fragile and perhaps a bit overrated.

I thought Falvine and/or Rocco made trips to the DR to visit him during the winter? They didn't see a huge bandage on his foot and say "Woah dude, what happened?"

"What happens in the DR, stays in the DR"

Until spring training. :)

Whether or not they did is beside the point, I think.

From the outside looking in, this looks like a pattern of Sano's lackadaisical approach to baseball. The FO could very well have looked in on Sano, told Sano he needs to look after himself, and, like most people, expected Sano to take care of business.

And, pardon if this comes across as a harsh replay, because it's not intended as such.

It should be quite clear at this point he needs a full time babysitter to help him lose weight, exercise, and keep him healthy.

I remember being as young as Sano yet, I knew how to put in the effort to be good at my job.

Which makes this sort of thing all the more puzzling to me because the thought of a full-time babysitter to make sure someone does their job really escapes me.

I know baseball teams have done the full-time babysitter in the past, but has Sano shown that he's got the talent for that extra effort?

Rocco visited him in December. Sano didn't play in the winter league until January and this allegedly happened after he was all done playing so mid-January to late January? I don't remember when he was done playing but it was way after Rocco was there.

I don't know about a Falvey visit, if there was one.

So what exactly is that?

I'm no doctor (well, technically I have a doctor of philosophy...)

I'm no medical doctor, but Google tells me that a debridement procedure means vaguely to remove contaminated tissue from a wound to promote better healing.

It was not taken care of when it happened. All on Sano and sounds like the operation, is cleaning out the mess from improper care. Always something with Sano, always!

It's a large hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, but that's not important right now.

Thad Levine on Miguel Sanó: “I got a chance to see him when I was down in the Dominican and literally lay hands on him as appropriately as possible, hug him and touch as many muscle groups as I could.”

He must have started from the head and worked his way down...

Looking for the silver lining, giving up on baseball early will leave the whole Summer for continuing civil conversations about politics.
