SI on Joe Mauer

Maybe he doesn't want a big send off and wants to leave out the back door. If so I don't begrudge him that wish. It is just I think he is being selfish if he keeps dragging it out. He should announce it very soon

Why?

It’s none of your concern.

How do you know he didn’t already tell Falvine?

Exactly

It's a big decision, take your time Joe.  It's your life and your job, Joe, and no one has the right to rush you just because they can't wait for the answer.  Just cause some fans are selfish and think they are owed answers doesn't mean anything.

Mauer catches one pitch in the 9th of his final game and Molitor pulls him out. Classy exit. So long, Joe.

Again, I think there are legit questions about how/if Mauer should be back next year but the idea that he wouldn't have performed in NY or Boston are crazy. He's a borderline HOFer who would have been an easy HOFer if he could have stayed healthy. It wouldn't have mattered where he played.

If he did then why on Earth would he stand in front of the fans and tell them he's still not sure?

That is classic Joe Mauer right there. The team sent him off with catching one final pitch in his last game. Tears all around. Then he says, “Well I didn’t decide or anything!” Classic confused/unsure Mauer. Hilarious. How much more clearly does the organization have to put it for him? Maybe a huge banner that says “You are retiring, Joe Mauer!”

Mauer likely could have continued to catch, but the threat of another foul ball concussion made that idea unacceptable. Plus he was one of the better athletes to have played the position, making his move to another position much simpler. I would include any corner spot in that statement, he was that good an athlete. A Sano he was not.

If i was in his cleats they would have had to have dragged me from home plate concussion or not.  There is no way i'm not finishing that game as catcher behind the plate. One last time.

It does appear that way.  I kinda get the impression they are showing him the door and trying to send him off in style.  It's sad but you can't play forever Joe and many before you have done it.

Looks like the Twins were trying their best to read the guy and he left everyone confused.  It is important that he give the team the proper notice, in my opinion.  Joe was pretty much treated like royalty by the organization since day one.  For him (with his concussions and significant decline) to be wishy-washy about this really is typical of how he's carried himself.  Sure, he is a genteel and sweet fellow, but on the other hand, he is a tough guy to do business with--and understand.

I admire your ability to slam the guy's character even on probably his last day playing baseball.  You are consistent if nothing else.

Let's wait a few days and see how his retirement "decision" plays out. I don't understand his motivation, exactly, but it appears that at some level Joe didn't want to explicitly distract from the various other final-game festivities that happen every season, and resolved not to state the obvious. The lengthy taps to his heart and so forth kind of work against that, but it's still what makes sense to me.

If Joe were really undecided about retiring, to say nothing of actively wanting to continue, his reaction to being asked to play catcher for one pitch would not have been tears of joy, I am pretty certain. He would have been angry, and probably would have balked, over what would be a condescending move by Molitor and whoever else had a hand in it.

No. He's done, and he's told them as directly as he felt he needs to. Whatever way he came to that decision, it's been made.

Once again, why?

Do teams give players notice when they plan to release them or not resign them? I mean like a month’s notice, not a day or two before the announcement.

I could be wrong, but I don’t remember Kent Hrbek announcing his retirement. Granted, part of that was the strike, but still. He could have announced it in June. At the time he was by far the best “local boy makes good” story in Twins history.

IMO the only thing wrong with the contract was the no trade clause.

Once the 2014 season was in the books, the no trade clause was irrelevant. He became a 10/5 guy.

And his decline didn't start till 2014 (or after the concussion in mid Aug, 2013). In 2013 his line was .324/.404/.476 making the AS game and winning a silver slugger. IMO, they wouldn't have considered trading him till the 2014 season when he had a sharp dropoff after his 2013. No one would trade for him after the concussion, the postion switch, and the 150 point drop in OPS.

And after that, he became a 10/5 guy anyway, making the no trade clause a moot point.

????

The contract took effect in 2011. The no-trade clause became moot after the 2013 season when he attained 10 year MLB service time (5 with current team) and automatically had trade refusal rights.

Joe doesn't care what the fans think, he will decide what he decides.  It makes no difference what Ewen has to say.  I agree with you that it's his life, his job and his decision, but he is being wishy washy about it.  Joe needs to wake up and smell the coffee in my opinion.  DECIDE....NOW.  but why is it that fans like you think they have the right to scold other fans who dare to ask difficult questions?

he didn't ask a difficult question. He called Mauer selfish for not letting everyone know his plans.

And you know, when these posts happened, it was before what we saw at the end of Sundays game. And so what if he can't quote make up his mind? It's a huge decision. His employers probably game him a time frame as to when they needed to know (if they even are considering having him back). There is zero reason he needs to make the decision right away (or during a season being played)

*checks calendar*

It's October 2nd and the postseason hasn't even properly begun yet.

So how is it selfish that Mauer hasn't decided what he's going to do when the leaves haven't even fallen from the trees yet?

Give the guy some time to reflect on what is an enormous decision, for crying out loud. If it was January 1st, you might have a point... but not at the beginning of October. The Twins can't even start the offseason for another 4-5 weeks anyway. None of this matters right now.

Forgive my ignorance let me get this straight a 10-5 guy can veto any trade regardless of how many times it is brought up and with however many teams?

I hope Joe thinks about it and decides to play next year, but for a contender with a strong lineup where he can just fit in and maybe they can make use of his on base skills. Hopefully he can go out there and try an earn a ring. But with a new baby thats probably not going to happen, but that's what I'm hoping for.
