I also asked a Rooker question, but since this was answered, I doubt mine will be:

Raking Rooker
12:17 Rooker doesn't make the BOARD.  Just wondering if you have any quick thoughts about his future.  Is he a Twin in 2019 or 2020?  Or just another quad A masher in the making?

Eric A Longenhagen
12:17 He's on there: https://www.fangraphs.com/prospects/the-board/2018-in-season-prospect-...
12:19 There's risk that he's a 4A guy, sure. Realistic upside is a solid everyday DH/1B/LF type
Striking out at that rate at his age in Double-A is not a great sign, but the power is real.

If we put Rooker's profile next to Adam Brett Walker III would it be that much different from each other? That's what I keep thinking every time there's a Rooker update.

1:10 Nick Gordon: Will he hit enough (he's young, so I'm not overly worried)...and will he play SS or 2B in the majors? Thanks,

Eric A Longenhagen
1:10 I have him as a 2B with some pop.

Rooker is in AA in his first full season as a pro swinging a wooden bat.  It took Walker 4 seasons to get there, and still is there (Harrisburg in the Nats' system) having a .707 OPS

You are the master at this. Each player's first full season at AA:

Player A: 65 extra base hits in 502 ABs / .807 OPS

Player B: 68 extra base hits in 503 ABs / .798 OPS

Who is who? Hint: one is proposed to be the Twins 1B next year. The other is ABW III.

.333 OBP and 26.4 K% vs. .309 OBP and 34.8 K%  is a tad more important than xBH and OPS

Interesting. OBP doesn't seem to matter any time Mauer is discussed on this website. In fact, I believe some describe it as an empty stat because all he does is hit singles and walk.

P.S. I also see you didn't acknowledge ABW III had the higher OPS in his first full season at AA ;)

Walker at age 23 in AA had a 34.8% K rate, whereas Rooker also age 23 had a 26.4% K rate.  A 8.4% K rate difference is a lot.  That being said, there is a decent risk Rooker has the same issues Walker did. We will have to wait to see how he adapts to his second go at AA or first go at AAA. Walker's K rate spiked to 38% in AAA.

He was 3 full years removed from the foil bat vs. Rooker's half.

Cannot underestimate the power of foil.

Really.

Asudillo is one of the few players that their babip is lower than their BA Jose Ramirez  and Didi Gregorius would be 2 others. Low K rate, higher home run totals. Astudillo has 3 HR in his 82 PA. Not a high rate of HR, but it could be 20 over a full season.

What a great article on La Tortuga.  Perfect blend of stats and narrative, for me.  He's the type of guy you love talking about twenty years from now when you are reminiscing about those great Twins championship teams of the 20's.  "Yeah, AK was cold-blooded.  Lewis was so smooth.  But man, Astudillo was the heart and soul of that team..."

Triple like.

"You know, we knew it was going to be ok before the seventh game when Turtle gave us all shoulder rubs and said 'Jump on my back, boys, I got this.' "

1:15 Byron Buxton was pretty much dead last in wrc+ and any other hitting statistic you want. He can't be that bad again....but how long do we have to wait?

Keith Law
1:15 Didn't play much and wasn't necessarily healthy when he did play.

Not yet Twins' related....but should be:

1:25 Looks like Gray won't start Game 1 for the Rockies. He might not start at all. Something's clearly not working there. Do you think he needs a change of scenery? Do you see anything specifically wrong with him?
Keith Law
1:26 Pitching in Coors is hard, man. You can be totally fine and still struggle there because your fastball doesn't move quite as much, or contact is just a little harder than it would be elsewhere. All the more credit to Kyle Freeland for the year he had. If the Rockies want to shop Gray, they shouldn't sell him for less than 90 cents on that dollar, because there's a good chance he becomes an above-average starter somewhere else, and there's still some chance he does it in Denver.

1:47 Do you think Mauer retires?  It looks like it. Will really miss him. But he hasn't been the same since the concussion.  Some in Twins Land still don't realize what they had.  At least in his catching days one of the best around. Should have had 2 MVPs. Borderline HOF?

Keith Law
1:47 Sounds like he's retiring, don't think he gets into the Hall as his case is solid but not a slam dunk and relies heavily on advanced stats.

1:57 Giardi, Bannister, David Ross, Alomor Jr., or Ausmus for Twins manager?

Keith Law
1:58 Ross has never managed, so I can't support that. Ausmus never grew at all as a manager in Detroit, so would you really hire him unless you felt absolutely certain that in just one year off the job he's changed his managing philosophy? Girardi was pretty solid in NY and I think he'd be a good hire for a lot of situations.

BTW, KLAW has Kershaw and Corbin as the number 3 and 4  FAs (if Clayton opts out)......It seems unlikely the Twins sign a top FA.....

I mean, last year Darvish was the #1 FA and they were seemingly relatively close, and this year they have even more $ than last year and there are more big name free agents to draw the big boys' attention, so it's not entirely crazy.  I could imagine them getting close on Corbin (much less likely on Kershaw).

My free agent starting pitcher preference for multi-year deals would probably go:

(1) Kershaw (if he opts out)

(2) Corbin

(3) Keuchel

(4) Price (if he opts out)

(5) Kikuchi

(6) Ryu

(7) Morton

(8) Cahill

(9) Eovaldi

(10) Happ - only on a 2-year deal though.

Eric: The Twins hiring David Ross would be __________.

Keith Law: Repeating a mistake.

Adam: Does a Byron Buxton for Manuel Margot challenge trade make sense for the Twins and Padres, or does one team have to give up more than the other?

Keith Law: Bad deal for the Twins.

Ron: Keith- The talk going around that the Twins are looking at Ross and DeRosa just has to be that, right? I mean come on. Some younger guy with some experience and an analytical approach and rapport with the young players is needed. I hope Falvey and Levine are thinking the latter and not the former. Geeesh!

Keith Law: Again, still don’t understand the fixation with guys who’ve never managed. You have at least 120 guys managing in full-season minor leagues every year. Not one of them is qualified to even interview ahead of two guys who talk real good but have never so much as run a coat check stand?

Ron: Do you think Mauer retires? It looks like it. Will really miss him. But he hasn’t been the same since the concussion. Some in Twins Land still don’t realize what they had. At least in his catching days one of the best around. Should have had 2 MVPs. Borderline HOF?

Dusty: Any thoughts you have on Wander Javier coming into the 2019 season? Can he shoot his way back into the top 100?
Keith Law: He wasn’t in my top 100 before so that’s a no.

I'm all for us going after some top FAs, but I want absolutely nothing to do with David Price. And the reality is we're never going to actually be in the running for Kershaw. I think Corbin, Keuchel or Ryu are the  best/most realistic FA options for us to pursue, but I really don't know how I'd rank them (or who we actually have a realistic chance of being able to get).
