My gosh, that young man on the mound.

He deserves a LOT better than this offensive offence.  (Regards to North, wherever he may be).

Joe Mauer went 0-4 this evening is now 0-10 on his rehab assignment.

I am not going to get too concerned about his hitting unless it continues for a few games after he gets back.  I am hoping the fact that he volunteered to hit the second game of the double-header when he was not scheduled for the second game is a better signs of him feeling better.  I don't think he walked at all, so he could have been swinging at pitches he normally would have let go by.

I'm telling ya, I'd run through a brick wall for that guy!

Most likely to get away from him, but...

Bats might get scared though.   Would the offense be effected?

You should not say things like that until the game is over.

Mike already jinxed us in the beginning.

Come on, boys.

Detroit's pen is one of the few worse than ours.

Let's get into 'em here.

We're into ‘em, just not hitting ‘em.

Pressly has to have at least one good inning in him doesn't he?

And Reed as well?

Maybe?

In the same game?

But he’s now done it three times. What does that mean?

We are going to lose Game 7 of the World Series this fall by a fluky piece of bad luck.

It was my thread to post tonight, and I had it written pending lineups. No excuses, but didn't post it prior to going to softball. I'm sorry to everyone, including Carole Keller - below is what I had. You can see how wrong I was on Boyd!

----

The Twins face Matt Boyd tonight, which immediately had me thinking of another Boyd. Oil Can.

Yes, for you youngsters out there, there was a pitcher not too long ago who went by Oil Can Boyd. His baseball cards even listed him as Oil Can - proof below!

So you can see I'm not making this up. He had a decent 3 year peak from 1984 to 1986 during which he accumulated nearly 11 WAR and hung on for 5 seasons after that, totaling 16.0 fWAR for his career. I loved getting his baseball cards as a kid because of the novelty. I always wanted to learn where the name came from, but it never told me. So now in 2018 we can all go to his Wikipedia page instead to learn or re-learn. I'll wait for you.

....

Yikes. So, not only do we know his name comes from insane, bootlegger heavy drinking, but additional Googling will expand on the Wikipedia entry, telling us that Boyd smoked crack every day during the 1986 season (his Red Sox went to the Series that year - yes, the Buckner series - and Boyd was their #2 starter to Roger Clemens). And, he spent some time in federal prison - he seems to be out now.

Sometimes it's good to remember that there's much more to these players than what we see on the surface. Scary stuff. But to be fair, in the 80s half the league was on coke. Somehow, that's more allowable for the Hall of Fame and the record books than steroids, but that's an argument for another day.

Anywho, I have digressed far enough. Matt Boyd is the pitcher we face today, and looking at the traditional stats, he looks pretty tough. 4-4, 3.20 ERA. But there's a reason many of you have never heard of him. That reason?

He's not very good. He boasts a very mediocre 9.9 K-BB% and his BABIP-against shows some very luck-driven results. Think Mike Pelfrey, think Ricky Nolasco.....and Boyd slots in at that level. He's the second straight lefty the Twins will face, so Molitor will set the lineup accordingly. In any event, the Twins should be rounding plenty of runners around the bases, and making plenty of contact.

Jose Berrios goes for the Twins tonight. After a 3-game stretch between late April and early May during which Berrios struggled quite a bit, he's rebounded nicely, posting nice K rates, showing good command. And he's been able to complete at least 7 1/3 IP in each of the last 5 starts. He gives the Twins an advantage on most any night, and tonight against Oil Can's son (not really Oil Can's son)? He's a huge advantage.

The Twins should win this one tonight and get to 30-34 and potentially within 4 games of the lead. I guess we'll take it.

Oh, and Matt Belisle's back. Hooray! [ducks]

Do Falvine listen to you?

Can you tell them a couple of things for me?

Well... one thing in particular?

they do not listen to me, that I know of.... I’d hate for the first time to be about this particular boondoggle

Stop it.

Playing with fire there.

There is no way that Pressly survives the entire year without going to the DL.

I only liked this, because I agree. Maybe it’s time for that “DL” stint right about now.
