I'm thinking the Shelby non-endorsement made the difference. Didn't see that coming and good on him for putting himself above party.

This doesn't happen without a confluence of events, without any one of which, we don't have this outcome.  Shelby was key, but so was Moore's own righteous repulsiveness, and Jones' competence and likability.  Additionally (and perhaps most importantly), I hope Moore's accusers feel some vindication; this hasn't been an easy time for them.

Am I the only one not overjoyed? I’m relieved, for sure. While I get that it’s a red state, it was still really close. Way closer than it should have been, IMO, considering one candidate was a pedophile. I mean think on that and how many still voted for him. I guess a win’s a win and I didn’t think we had a hope, so I guess it’s good. But still ... a LOT of people still voted for a pedophile. And Jones will likely get voted out next time around, as long as they get anyone who’s not a pedophile to run against him.

Michael Jackson is another thread, and if you have time, I have a very worthwhile article for you to read ... basically asking 'How do you separate the monster from the genius? Is that even possible?' If you want to read it I'll look it up. But I don't spend my money on his music. His music, however, is genius. Did Moore have any qualities that would put him in that category? And was Michael Jackson ever in a position to govern and vote on laws and policy? Both pedophiles, but not related in this situation at all so I'm not sure I get the comparison, other than maybe too many are willing to overlook the monster for another purpose?

 

I also read that the African American turnout was very large, despite the barriers. There was a very large, organized effort and it made a huge difference.

I think the significant factor in this is that this special election has really polarized a lot of swing/independent/center voters (nationwide) against the GOP for their continued support of this nonsense. Actually I have no data on that but that is my feeling and my hope at least.

McConnell probably inoculated his party by his repeated statements that the People of Alabama Would Decide. 2018 voters in the middle probably will hear claims from both sides and conclude "meh".

Good win for Jones and democrats. It grates my soul to see how many people claimed the allegations were false. Alabama is in the condition they are because of the continued support for extreme GOP policies. The failure to expand Medicaid by itself is unbelievable to me. Maybe with Jones as the most visible Democrat he can begin to do some good in that state. He will never sway the blood red evangelicals, and the state is destined to stay deep red, but this result gives me some hope there is at least enough sanity to not elect a disgusting human into a powerful position.

Women as a group were said to be 60%+ for Jones. I don't even want to do the math to compute what that probably implies for my white-skinned brothers there. :)

We have to start doing deeper demographics on white voters. White Christian voters (which yes is most of them) v. all other whites.

 

Until we do that, we're not going to truly see where the problem is. It's not just being white.

If you feel that strongly about abortion, you could make a reasonable moral argument that Moore was still the lesser of two evils.

 

And partisanship is, and always will be, a powerful drug.

I really don't see why republicans proceeded south a bill dems wouldn't vote for. Dems have the leverage since they are not in control of any branch.

You have to compromise to get stuff done in Washington. The GOP doesn't want to, and hasn't wanted to since Newt Gingrich showed them how lucrative being an ******* can be.

 

This isn't on the Democrats, the Republicans want to give the Democrats nothing and are willing to break the government to make that happen. This is nothing new, we've been seeing this for a LONG time.

 

The old cliche is that money can't buy happiness, look at how true it is. The 1% who are funding the GOP coffers are hateful, spiteful, rude, and clearly incredibly unhappy. They want to burn everything down and murder the goose that laid the golden egg.

The shut down tactic is a PR stunt.  The Republicans who have the white house and majorities in house and senate run the show, this is the Democrats only tactic.  To call it the Republicans fault is silly.  Win elections or allow the majority to legislate, or if those options don't work own the shutdown.  While it is true the Republicans have worked to avoid that only goes as far as the Democrats let it.  If they give in now Democrats will demand more, that's politics.  If you can win the PR game on this and play the politics out to the election that might work, but don't tell me you want an honest discussion if you want it every which way this time.  I'm sorry Republicans didn't cave but deal with reality they would be failing me and everyone that voted for them if they did.  If Democrats wanted to 10 of them could have worked something out, but they didn't because the PR game is more important.  It's an election year, if you let the PR game work the next shut down is on you.  If however Republican majorities see gains maybe these games end.

Congressional Republicans have forgotten they are a separate branch of the government.  They are just Trump puppets.  There are so few of them worth anything that it's almost appropriate to label the whole of the GOP as worthless.  Their whole belief in smaller government and states rights is a facade as well.

 

Can't wait till the Democrats are firmly in office where their agenda of pimping for the rich comes at the cost of the rest of us.  Then Trump can sit in the W House like the petulant child he is and cry for the rest of his term.  POS!
