Fall Calls-up

What might we expect? Gonsalves & Romero on the mound. Garver behind the plate. Gordon at short. This would give us the lineup we've been anticipating for a while. Would certainly be an interesting intro to next year. Would also cause some issues. I'd move Polanco to 2nd where he belongs and then do what with Dozier? Put him to first?

Molly would be in a tough position. Playing players to observe them and probably lose some games at the same time he's playing for his life.

Still two weeks. That likely will determine if the Twins bring in prospects for evaluation or guys they think can help win. Obviously, there is some overlap there. Most notably Garver. And hopefully Turley in a relief role.

No way Gordon comes up this fall, imo.

Garver and Gonsalves and Turley and not sure who else.

I'm pretty sure Granite will get the call again. He has some nice value as a pinch runner or back-up defensive outfielder in the case we pinch hit for Kepler against a lefty late in the game.

duh, not sure how I missed that easy one! agreed.

Garver and Granite seem like locks. Palka and/or Vielma are two players the FO could call up. They might be on the DFA bubble for next year. All are on the 40-man roster.

Turley is the only SP on the roster that should get the call. Romero is almost to his innings limit - he has about 15 IP left in the tank - so I doubt he'll be here in September. Gonsalves deserves a chance and I deserve to see him pitch. Gotta think the FO will clear a roster spot for him (Monday?).

There are some decent AAA RP but none are on the 40-man roster. Maybe they will add one of them. Bard or Curtiss maybe?

Vargas will be back too with Garver and Granite. 15 bats seems about the most they would need.

They'll recall whichever reliever goes down for Perkins, Turley, probably Santiago by then.

I will be interested to see what they do with Romero, he is far from a given. I don't think they call up Gonsalves unless he is starting games.

One or two from the Reed/Bard/Melville/Curtiss/Tonkin/Melotakis group is likely added to the 40 man and called up.

I'd say:

Garver

Turley

Palka/Vargas

Probably Granite

Vielma only if injury to infield.

Nick Gordon is in AA and not on 40-man, so not happening.

Gonsalves I would argue against bringing up b/c he's not on the 40-man roster.  Who to DFA? Recker?  And especially if Perkins comes off the 60-day DL at some point this season.  They don't have room to add both.

Unless Chargois goes to the 60-day DL?

Once Perkins is added back from the 60 day DL, they are still only at 38, so there is some space. And I think Mejia is a candidate to go on the 60 if they need another slot.

I don't think anyone will be called up to play everyday, unless there's an injury or two.

Garver and Curtiss are the two that I would most like to see. Obviously, with roster expansion, more will be brought up: Granite, Vargas, Palka, and maybe Gonsalves and Park.

It is in a way exciting to see what the new regime does this September. We twins fans are used to predictable unaspiring call ups.  But the players added are more than likely on the opening day roster the following year or just cut from the team in general.

2014 was (Logan Darnell, Chris Herrman, Hicksy, Doug Bernier, AJ Achter, Lester Oliveros, Tonkin, Josmil Pinto) (8)

2015 was (Vargas, Sano, Danny Santana, Tonkin, Achter and Eric Fryer) (6)

2016 was (Vargas, Berrios, Duffy, Buxton, and James Bereford) (5)

So what is a realistic number of added players (6)?

My predictions are: Mitch Garver, Zach Granite, Nik Turley, Kennys Vargas, Buddy Boshers (sent for Perk) and Tonkin (6)

I think Mejia will be back sooner than later, don't think 60 day DL will be an option.

Once the AAA season ends, I hope we see Gonsalves get added and make some starts if Enns doesn't pitch too well. I'd also like to see a few of the many relief pitchers we've been reading about all season.

Ah I forgot about that!  I'm not accustomed to the 40-man only having 38 on it.  Usually 39 or 40.

Correction, there are currently 38 on the 40 man.  When Perkin's is activated that will make it 39, leaving only 1 spot open.

This is tough, mostly from a reliever standpoint. I'd hate to lose Curtis, Reed, Moya or Bard and they'd have to be added to the 40-man this winter anyway. That's a lot of guys to add particularly considering Turley is already on the 40-man and may get another look this time in the bullpen where he is probably better suited.

And that doesn't even include guys who the are pitching well in Rochester but who have already cleared waivers once; Melotakis and Tonkin.

Normally you'd think young guys like Felix Jorge and Randy Rosario who are on the 40-man and have already been up once this year would get some bullpen appearances but I can't see any room for them this year.

Santiago certainly would be a candidate for 60 day DL if need be.  He's already at like day 45 and his rehab program was just suspended.  Seems likely to be AT LEAST another two weeks.  Assuming the Twins don't anyone from the waiver wire before September 1, the Twins have 3 open spots on the 40 man - one of which figures to be Perkins.

I would assume Recker will be up once Rochester is done too.  Why not? Never hurts to have an extra catcher.

As for guys not on the 40 man, the most likely call ups are Jake Reed, Michael Tonkin, Aaron Slegers, Stephen Gonsalves, John Curtiss, Niko Goodrum, Byung Ho Park and Matt Hague.  Not all of them will, of course.  Some are pretty long shots.

I'd guess Melo and Bard are not protected.  Melo cleared waivers, so he's not going to be selected in Rule 5, and Bard turns 27 in November and they haven't shown a particular urgency to push him this year.  We still have one more year of control over both Melo and Bard before they are eligible for minor league free agency.

Tonkin will be eligible for minor league free agency this winter. I'd guess he is left off the roster too.

Moya will probably get protected. Curtiss has been another fast riser the last 2 years, I'd guess he would be protected too.  Reed got pushed earlier, but seems to have stagnated quite a bit, not sure on him anymore...

Recker is not on the 40 man and there's no reason to need 4 catchers in September. I could see Santiago hitting the 60 day DL if they decide he isn't ready to go.

Recker is on the 40 man.

Seems to be some confusion. He is still listed, but it had previously been reported that he was outrighted:

His Fox Sports page shows that outright transaction too:

Are we just giving Perkins a pass here?   He has been out for a really long time, pitched 7 innings  with a 6.14 ERA in the low minors.

I'd say more like resignation than a free pass.

I assume they'll give Perkins a shot, but it won't be with any type of leverage in the beginning.

DFA Boshers for Perkins.

60-day Santiago (or release).

Garver, Granite, Vargas, Curtiss, Reed, Gonsalves, Turley.

Someone has to leave to have some of the non-roster names added.

Who won;t be around in 2018?

Well, the Twins have to make a decision on Vielma and Plaka.

They have three AA pitchers taking up space: Romero, Jorge and Rosario.

At some point, you have to make a decision on Turley. Better yet, you have to make a decision on Santiago (free agent) or Gibson (don't arbitrate) as well as Colon (would he be back in 2018? - If not, why is he starting now).

Gimenez should also be on the bubble. You make a decision for the 40-man - Recker or Gimenez, and do bring up Garver nonetheless.

Tonkin, WImmers...been there, done that, sadly. Invites back next year if they wish. You have to make decisions on Boshers, Rucinski and Busenitz, which shouldn't be all that hard. Also, is Pressly really a keeper?

Then, do you do a September looksee at guys on the fringe: Baxendale, Slegers, Hurlbut, Melotakis, for example, and keep the guys you truly have to ad in November off until then (Bard, Curtiss, Gonsalves, etc.).

Do you do Vargas or Park, one but NOT both.

If not in contention come Sept. 1, NO ONE should be on the roster that won't be considered for the roster come November and spring training. You have to see the future, not dwell in giving Colon more innings.
