As much as I want to be a parent one day, challenges like this give me pause... My age group in their late 20s was the last generation that could ride their bikes to the park and play with their friends until dinner time without adult supervision.

 

/end rant now get off my lawn.

My kids did. Kids still should. Almost no children are abducted or whatever. There is no reason not to let your kids play outside in most places in the country. Overall violence is down....

Our littles still do. In fact, I love that about our neighborhood. You can go out after about 4-5, and there are parents along the road allowing kids to bike, roller blade, drive little vehicles, and just play in the street, warning the kids to move whenever traffic is coming. There are a dozen kiddos at any time in the street playing together. I'll go out my front door at times and there is sidewalk chalk down my entire sidewalk from writing I don't recognize, and that's awesome, frankly.

We also let our kids run free at parks and have a good time, though they're a bit young yet to venture on their own.  The real dangers are elsewhere.

I provide minimal supervision to my kids when they're outside. We have swings and a climbing thing that the neighbor kids come and play on. Mostly, they stay here. Once the pool opens, my oldest (9, 7), are allowed to go on their own and be back by a certain time.

 

The fallacy that everyone is a helicopter parent is maddening. To me, it is the older generations telling us how to parent and how to live. I think we break with how they grew up in accepting others and not bullying. This had led to being accused of raising snow flakes and being over sensitive.

Thing is, I give a **** about negative opinions. You can't call my kid a snowflake, then call the cops when I'm not hovering over them. Can't have it both ways.

Slightly under the influence in that post... Still, I refuse sit and listen/participate in the negative narrative against patents. We all do our best. Some are better than others, some actually read books about kids and development, others just wing it. In both cases, kids end up on both sides of the spectrum as adults.

I think there are some valid concerns on parenting today.  There are a lot of parenting fads out there (attachment parenting and the like) that promote some really bizarre ideas.  Parents are the ones that want everyone to get an A and stand up for an award for participation.  Too many kids run the show at home too.

 

Kids need guidance about the world.  Of course, part of the problem, is that many of their guides are pretty ill-equipped for the task.  I'm with you on the older generation though.  I always look at it this way - all of these terrible parents had parents didn't they?  Maybe the problems started there.

That has to be grounds for negligence right? I mean, if that can't be proved to be negligence I'm not sure what is. Don't go after the employee... go after the state. Win a lawsuit that makes states now responsible for who they sell guns to and how they sell them. That might be the only way to get any progress.

So I've been as critical as anyone of the police's use of force.

But the movement is forfeiting every ounce of credibility it has built to this point, by continuing to protest the Blevins shooting.

The body cam footage shows the definition of a justified shooting. Blevins left them absolutely no other option.

 

This also is going to hurt attracting good cops.

If you are interested in becoming a cop, for all the right reasons, and you see what these two are being put through right now, why on earth would you sign up for that?

This is a movement that I'd like to see succeed. 

 

But to do that, like with many other topics being discussed right now on this board, you need to make sure you're doing it in a credible, positive way.  One instance like this can wash out the opportunity for progress in 100 justified cases for protest.

Agreed. The people advocating for reduced violence from police would do well to commend these officers up as examples of correct use of force. They didn't shot immediately, even though they knew he had a gun. It is pretty clear they gave this man plenty of chances to submit and go peacefully. He didn't, and drew his weapon, then was shot. Officers did everything correctly, from my untrained eye.

What motive did this guy have to start shooting people playing video games? Why do people place such little value on their own lives and other people's lives they don't know? I'll never understand.

I'm guessing that we get a lot of blame on the violence of video games themselves.

The shooter has twice been hospitalized in psychiatric care, and has been prescribed anti psychotic medication, but yet is allowed to buy handguns.

This country needs to come to the realization that no, not everyone gets to have guns.

That won't happen until we have the courage to take on the NRA.

Fox is not a news organization.  They are an extension of the WH PR team.

We live in very weird and interesting times where a private media conglomerate acts as state news agency (when their candidate is in power). 

 

I'm not sure how to resolve this under our constitution and current SCOTUS caselaw, but it is a problem we will continue to deal with in the foreseeable future.

This is how desensitized we are to school shootings now... A 16 year old student was being bullied by another 16 year old boy in Matthews, NC. The one being bullied brought a gun and shot the bully in the hallway. The school goes on a quick lockdown, and tells the students you can go home if needed, otherwise we will still have class in session. 100 out of the 2200 students left at normal release.
