Bark's Lounge Verified Member Posted May 8, 2017 Posted May 8, 2017 You can disagree about whether to go for Harvey and think it's worthwhile, despite his difficult agent, bad attitude and poor performance, in the hope that he could turn around, but it is extremely unlikely Falvey would. Why put any energy into his performance and his attitude, and why risk his attitude, when you're still establishing Sano, Buxton, Berrios, Kepler, Polanco, Vargas and others on your team? You will get him for 1.75 years. If the Met's want to desperately flip him... cool. The price should be low. In no way do I give up more than anything conceivably exceptional.

He's arguing that he shouldn't be suspended.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 Good article. I'd still trade something for him, if it's cheap.
Eris Verified Member Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 I'd love it if the Twins try to swing a trade for Matt Harvey, ASAP... Will be their second best starter. Still throwing 94-95 and a high 80s slider and prime candidate for a change of scenery. Harvey has become cancerous. It is really telling that none of his teammates are willing to stick up for him. I don't see how Harvey is much different than Jonathon Papelbon. He hasn't pitched in ML since the Nationals released him.
beckmt Verified Member Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 Doubt Harvey not being on a team will happen in the near future. However he is costing himself money after 2018, especially if he is not pitching better than a #3 starter. Teams will overlook some behavior issues from a 1 or a 2, but lower is becomes a factor in both pay and whether you want him on your team.
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 A rebuilding team that is focusing on building a great clubhouse culture doesn't trade for Matt Harvey.Neither has someone who was involved in the MLB cocaine scandal as their manager or a multiple DUI offender as their pitching coach. Stuff happens. The Twins' clubhouse is not filled with angels
Shaitan Verified Member Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 This is certainly one example where TJ surgery harmed a person more than help. He's been a shell of his former self since he had the surgery. I don't think this is your point, but I'd say if his arm doesn't hurt anymore than the surgery did him more good than bad, regardless of his performance on the field.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 LOL at people saying the Twins should steer clear of Harvey.Few things: 1. It's not uncommon for pitchers to not show up the night before they pitch a day game.2. It's not against the law to go out partying until 4am3. Harvey isn't the first nor the last professional baseball player to have a hangover. However, since it occured on a day where he wasn't playing/needed, it's literally a non issue. It's the equivolent of a 9-5er being hungover on a Saturday. Does that have anything to do with his performance at work at all? No.4. The Twins have had plenty of partiers over the years, in fact their most famous big partier was a key cog in their two world series titles! Kennnnnt HRRRRRBBBBBBEEEEEEKKKKKK.The Mets are the idiots here who are airing their dirty laundry to the press, that franchise is a mess and a laughstocking 5x more than it's not.I would give up anyone not named:BerriosSanoBuxtonKeplerGordanGonsalves DozierFor him straight up.In fact, I think the Twins can see if they can build a package around Erv Santana for him.

jimbo92107 Verified Member Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 I wouldn't go for it. Sounds like Matt Harvey is a young millionaire with a giant ego, which in the Twins clubhouse would be instant disruption. Harvey's "migraine" incident may have been real, but not showing up for practice without a signed note from a doctor is just what teams don't want. On top of that, it sounds like Harvey hasn't fully recovered from his TJ surgery. Did he need to change his mechanics? Does he not yet trust the elbow? Is the new tissue getting damaged? Too many questions, including his maturity. Let him stay in New York; he's their problem.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 A rebuilding team that is focusing on building a great clubhouse culture doesn't trade for Matt Harvey. Well it didn't work out for the Twins when they traded for Delmon Young. On the other hand it DID work out for the Rays when they traded for Matt Garza. In the same trade. I'd say there isn't any definitive answer when it comes to trading for a change-of-scenery malcontent if he has talent. Not that I know if Harvey still has any.
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 Papelbon was always a d***, Papelbon isn't out of the league because he is a jerk, it's because he is old, and not good anymore. Also Harvey hasn't gotten into any fights with his teammates, his biggest crime is drinking on an off day (The horror!)It wasn't an off day, it was a game day. Just because he wasn't expected to pitch doesn't mean he wasn't expected to show up to the ballpark. Totally different than a 9 to 5 guy being hungover on a Saturday.Harvey isn't paid by the hour, his salary covers the whole season. Do starting pitchers only accumulate service time on the days they pitch? Also, he lied about it. Two points with that. One, I can't respect a grown man who lies. Looking another grown man/woman in the eye and lying to them might be about the most arrogant and disrespectful thing you can do to a person, IMO. (Aside from using the exit only lane to pass 40 cars before forcing your way in from the shoulder in rush hour, of course. )Second, the fact he felt he had to lie about it shows that he knew he was doing something wrong. Now, all that said, he didn't go AP and assault/endanger someone, so it's not an unforgivable offense to me. I would pass, as an owner/GM, because I personally don't respect liars, but it's not something I'd get worked up over as a fan who doesn't have to sign his paychecks.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 Did he lie about it? He was being honest, a migraine is why he stayed home. Yes it was prob due to a hangover, but better he sleep it off then not. Also SP don't need to be at night games the night before they start a day game. All teams do that.
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2017 Author Posted May 9, 2017 So it gets dumber. http://deadspin.com/matt-harvey-admits-he-was-out-after-curfew-apologizes-1795064297 So now it looks like Harvey was out all night at a bar, leaving at 4am. He then went golfing. He then claimed a migraine and didn't show up for work. He apologized to everyone today and now might not file his grievance.
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 I'd still pick up the phone about the idiot.

You don't get a migraine from a hangover. They are medically 2 completely different types of headaches. He also didn't tell him why he had a headache. A lie by omission isn't any less of a lie. Are pitchers NEVER expected to be at the park in that circumstance, or do teams sometimes tell pitchers they don't have to be there? Because those are 2 totally different things. Those are as different as me telling an employee, "Hey, tommorrow is Friday and we are kinda slow, go ahead and have a three day weekend!" And him deciding that now he never has to show up for work on Fridays because i sometimes give him Friday's off.If the Mets didn't expect him at the park then why did they suspend him? They told him he didn't have to come to the park, then retroactively changed their mind and suspended him? How does that make any sense? And if he wasn't expected at the park, why would he even call in with a migraine in the first place? There would be no need to even do that if he was not expected to be there.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 At the end of the day the Mets should have kept this in house, instead they do what they always do and attack through the media. (The Twins do this as well) This is why the Mets are considered a joke and a second rate team in this city, and why they haven't won anything since 86.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 This adds a potential wrinkle to the storyGuy was heartbroken, went out, had a bit to much to drink. It happens. Again, the Mets should have kept this in house.

But I do suppose Adriana Lima not dating you is probably more devastating to someone who, you know, she might actually date.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 If the point is that we can't trade for a player because he drinks....and yet we are good having a coach with multiple DUI arrests....I think it is a legit question/point. It maybe could have been said differently...
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Alcoholism isn't a valid excuse for aggravated DUIs Allen broke the law (repeatedly), Harvey didn't break any law, he drank too much one night. It happens. Don't get me wrong, I wish him well in his recovery, and I don't think he should have been fired. I'm glad he has turned it around. People deserve second chances, Harvey obviously does as well.

Again, the Mets should have kept this in house. I would venture to bet the Mets would have been more willing to keep it in house if Harvey had been honest and this was the first time. Plus - it's New York - Matt Harvey getting drunk and not showing up was never going to avoid being public. I don't know why we're trying to let him off the hook here. He did a bunch of stupid stuff and put his employer in a terrible spot. That's pretty much the end of the story. And I'd still pick up the phone and ask the price tag.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Who is letting him off the hook? He was stupid for lying and missing work.
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Who is letting him off the hook? He was stupid for lying and missing work. Dave. He's pinning it on the Mets for not keeping it "in house".

It maybe could have been said differently... In my defense, I think the first point is ridiculous, but I shouldn't assume for everyone, especially stated opinions. I would hesitate to trade for Harvey because he might not be good anymore, not because he parties on occasion. But circling back to an alcoholic who fell off the bandwagon is still nasty. Though I'm probably over sensitive on that issue based on my profession.

Dave, are you aware that Matt Harvey already has over 4 years service time? He's making over $5 mil this year, will get arbitration again next year, and then become a free agent after 2018.
