The Twins have the best record in baseball.

The Twins' magic number to clinch first place is 149*. Let the countdown begin!

* The traditional magic number for outright clinch would be 158, but the following site incorporates the knowledge that division rivals play each other frequently so that some wins count twice toward clinching: https://lyle.smu.edu/~olinick/riot/american_league.html

The Minnesota Twins pitching staff has the lowest ERA in Major League Baseball.

hahahahaha

For once this really is Fun With Numbers!

Twins batters have a BABIP of .307, pitchers have a BABIP of .220. Versus a league average of .276. This helpful trend will obviously continue.

Jason Castro, with 0.5 fWAR, has, on a Fangraphs $/WAR basis, earned 1/6 of his contract.

Put another way, Castro is on pace to return $299.5 million in surplus contract value.

Going into today's game, Twins starters have 20 strikeouts.

Byron Buxton has 17.

Given the nice start, this thread has been fun... until now.

The twins have outscored their opponents by 20 runs this year - best in the AL.

Second best in the AL are the Yankees at +12.

This is in part because the Twins have averaged 5 runs per game, second in the AL only to the Rangers (at 6!) But mostly it's because the Twins have given up the fewest runs per game in baseball. 2.78 runs allowed per game.

as of  today, 5 players in baseball haven't swung and missed at a pitch in the strike zone:

Joe Panik

Mekly Cabrera

Andrew Benintendi

JJ Hardy

Jorge Polanco

4/17 update:

it's down to 3: Panik, Polanco, and JJ Hardy.

Interestingly, the next two on the list are Nunez (98.2% zone contact) and Mauer (97.5% zone contact)

Miguel Sano hits the ball hard.

Oh right, this is about numbers. He leads baseball in average exit velocity.

For context, the top 50 leaderboard in average exit velocity ranges from 90.7 mph to 96.2 mph. Except 96.2 mph is second place. Sano is comfortably ahead at 102.1.

The difference between his exit velocity and second place (Khris Davis) is greater than the difference between #2 and #50.

The last time the Twins hit more HRs than their opposition for a season was 2004.

Prior to that, 1991.

Why not? As I see it, we're on a 13 year cycle, and guess where we are on that.

That's some fine calculatin' work there, Lou.
