Fun with Numbers: 2017 edition

Robbie Grossman is making about $635 per OPS * 1000, Joe Mauer is making about 41,667.  Normally I would say Mauer will settle into the good enough player he's been the last two or 3 years, but that barley good enough player started the last two years hot,  he has now been a not good enough player for a full calander year.

Pilfering these from Gleeman:

Danny Santana has hit .222/.255/.299 since 2015. Among the 310 players with at least 500 plate appearances from 2015-2017, his OPS is 308th.

Worst ERAs among pitchers with 100+ starts since 2013:

4.72 Kyle Gibson

4.59 Ricky Nolasco

4.48 CC Sabathia

4.46 Phil Hughes

In the strange world that is Major League Baseball, Byron Buxton has a higher exit velocity (84.79 mph) than Eddie Rosario (84.30 mph). Buxton has two doubles to Rosario's two doubles and two homers.

MLB average is 87.60 mph.

That has to be because they use the pitch speed on his whiffs to calculate exit velocity.

Last year the Reds gave up more than 7 HRs to only 1 player, Kris Bryant. This year? They've given up 8 to Thames already....(from a tweet, think it was a FG person....)...

I was laughing my ass off at that stat last night.

Ouch. And we thought Bautista vs. the Twins was bad.

That sounds like there is a severe deficiency in advanced scouting for the Reds.  Also sounds like the Reds pitchers have trouble learning from each others mistakes.    It will be interesting to see where Thames' stat line ends up, as the league adjusts to his strengths.

In fairness, it's hard to expect anyone to hit like this, and we are less than a month into the season, so not sure how much scouting there is. Also, Cincy is kind of a hitter's park.

That's fair, but you figured after the 6th or 7th homer, the Reds would at least pitch around the guy, until they figure out how to exploit his weaknesses.

Danny Santana is on pace to save the Twins 75 runs over a full season worth of defense, according to DRS.

But even that pales in comparison to Justin Haley, who would be worth 108 in a full time pitching role.

I'm pretty sure Jim Thome hit 7 off Rick Reed one year.  2003, I would guess.

Strikeouts still a team-wide issue for the pitching staff.

K% of 18%, just 0.1% ahead of the Rays for worst in the league.

Twins back in first place in the Central!

As expected. Clinch day in September, or are we talking August?

Rookie phenom Aaron Judge is a half year older than Bryce Harper, and 10 weeks older than Manny Machado.

The Yankees are going to be really good in 2019.

I bet BABIP looked a lot better when most of the outfielders moved like Josh Willingham.

(I have no data for this, just a gratuitous Willingham shot due to my mental image of 1950s era outfielders)

Willie Mays says "hey!"

Wille Mays says "I was the best centerfielder of my generation!", if only in his unguarded moments.
